Thoughts from this past weekend:

--Yes, it's nice the All-Stars took down Chelsea, but it's just one game that meant nothing. Neither team was used to playing with each other save the large DC United contingent, and in the end it'll be most known for Joe Cole's injury. I love MLS, and cannot wait for a team to land here in Philadelphia so I can see games on a constant basis in person. I just hope it's not at the expense of the Wizards leaving Kansas City, but that's another topic.

I truly believe that a team put together from MLS clubs, given the resources and squad depth of a Premiership club, would survive and not get relegated over a 38-match season. But it wouldn't contest for a Champions League spot, and would likely need some breaks for a top-ten finish. Saturday's match was a very small step for MLS, and I look forward to decades worth of likewise pushes forward.

--So, Solomon has split the Premiership TV baby in two here in the U.S. Most of us do not have the means to get Setanta for whatever reason (mine is that the building I live in does not allow dishes), and will be lacking some of the league's best matches. Here's hoping Setanta gets added to more cable options, but I'm not holding my breath, especially here in Comcastland.

--And because it seems Setanta gets most of their matches this season, I'm forced to wonder how I'm going to follow United. Internet broadcasts are nice, but Mickey Thomas gets on my nerves a wee bit. Asian pirated broadcasts? My Spidey sense prevents me from taking the plunge. Yes, you can always catch the highlight package on Sunday and see a rebroadcast later in the week--but there's nothing like live. The wife would kill me if I went to a bar/pub to watch the games, but then again she's never happy when I'm in front of the computer and TV on Saturday mornings. What to do...

--Two quick MLS notes beyond the All-Star game: Sunday's Chivas/Revs matchup would be an interesting final if it turned into a 3-2, 4-3 kind of game. If I'm a Revs fan, my hope is that the team stays healthy. It and Chicago may be the only two teams that could beat D.C. in a two-match series or in the conference final one-and-done.

And a good choice by the Rapids to extend Fernando Clavijo's contract; hopefully his ability to find talent is followed by success on the field.

--Lastly, this is why you should never buy a Girls Gone Wild disc (http://www.latimes.com/features/magazine/west/la-tm-gonewild32aug06,0,2664370.story?coll=la-home-headlines) ever again, or you're going straight to hell. And if you're an atheist? You get to listen to Mambo #5 for the rest of eternity.

I'm pretty sure that you can't be stopped from obtaining satellite tv if you have a patio or balcony.

Laws are nice, but condo and co-op associations have the power to make your life miserable, force you to go to court, etc. ... and is getting to watch future Nats star Giuseppi Rossi sit the bench really worth it?

Very bad business for the Premiership. The executives probably made the deal with Setanta because they recognize Setanta's clout in many countries. The U.S. is not one of those countries when it comes to full-schedule TV channels. Setanta will struggle to get its new channel added to even the most expensive cable and satellite packages because the service providers will not be able to use it as selling point for enough people. Even if Setanta is a wild success, the Premiership will still have less full-game TV coverage in the U.S. than it did before the deal.

And from the Small World Department, a police officer quoted in the story plays first base on my 38+ baseball team. Wow.

Your wife won't let you go to pubs to watch a soccer game?

What, is she jealous of the other dozen middle aged ex pats sipping on loggers?

That makes no sense....men have been watching sports at pubs for millenia!

I would hope your wife would have a problem with you sipping on a logger.

With apologies to ManU fans, will this deal mean more variety on Fox? Maybe to us non-PPV paying folks it won't seem that different.

I'm not sure how Settanta compares to FSC (Fox Soccer Channel), but during the 2005-2006 season we were certainly inundated with live Premier League games on FSC...I'm assuming it will be the same for the upcoming season.

Hey Kenn, speaking of threadjacking - wanted to confirm highest attended soccer games in US history. I have yesterday's Chivas USA-New England game (*snrk*) in third, behind the 1984 Olympic Final and the 1994 World Cup Final. As the attendance guru of the nation, can you confirm or deny?

Man, every weekend for eight or nine months? If your significant other doesn't mind that, mazeltov.

I'm thinking he's going to get "Bob Crane'd" here pretty soon. He messes with the wrong daughter, some ex-CIA or Special Forces guy will put him down. Claire just painted a huge bullseye on his forehead.
