Thoughts from this past weekend:
--Yes, it's nice the All-Stars took down Chelsea, but it's just one game that meant nothing. Neither team was used to playing with each other save the large DC United contingent, and in the end it'll be most known for Joe Cole's injury. I love MLS, and cannot wait for a team to land here in Philadelphia so I can see games on a constant basis in person. I just hope it's not at the expense of the Wizards leaving Kansas City, but that's another topic.
I truly believe that a team put together from MLS clubs, given the resources and squad depth of a Premiership club, would survive and not get relegated over a 38-match season. But it wouldn't contest for a Champions League spot, and would likely need some breaks for a top-ten finish. Saturday's match was a very small step for MLS, and I look forward to decades worth of likewise pushes forward.
--So, Solomon has split the Premiership TV baby in two here in the U.S. Most of us do not have the means to get Setanta for whatever reason (mine is that the building I live in does not allow dishes), and will be lacking some of the league's best matches. Here's hoping Setanta gets added to more cable options, but I'm not holding my breath, especially here in Comcastland.
--And because it seems Setanta gets most of their matches this season, I'm forced to wonder how I'm going to follow United. Internet broadcasts are nice, but Mickey Thomas gets on my nerves a wee bit. Asian pirated broadcasts? My Spidey sense prevents me from taking the plunge. Yes, you can always catch the highlight package on Sunday and see a rebroadcast later in the week--but there's nothing like live. The wife would kill me if I went to a bar/pub to watch the games, but then again she's never happy when I'm in front of the computer and TV on Saturday mornings. What to do...
--Two quick MLS notes beyond the All-Star game: Sunday's Chivas/Revs matchup would be an interesting final if it turned into a 3-2, 4-3 kind of game. If I'm a Revs fan, my hope is that the team stays healthy. It and Chicago may be the only two teams that could beat D.C. in a two-match series or in the conference final one-and-done.
And a good choice by the Rapids to extend Fernando Clavijo's contract; hopefully his ability to find talent is followed by success on the field.
--Lastly, this is why you should never buy a Girls Gone Wild disc (http://www.latimes.com/features/magazine/west/la-tm-gonewild32aug06,0,2664370.story?coll=la-home-headlines) ever again, or you're going straight to hell. And if you're an atheist? You get to listen to Mambo #5 for the rest of eternity.
