I think that free-kick goal Wynalda scored has gone to his head. He is a woeful commentator, worse than one of the Tennis commentators I saw to day, McCenroe's little brother, I believe. Jesus the guy doesn't now what he's talking about. I wish the game was on Fox Soccer Channel because they're commentators at least know what they're talking about. Its as if this game has totally made up for the utter embarrassment of the WC, when commentators completely underestimated or disregarded the teams in their group. Hopefully people won't be remarking on this game in 4 years time, cause it is a meaningless pre-season, after Chelsea big name signings had had a few weeks training. Please.

I think a pre-req of all soccer commentators is to not have a god damn clue what you are talking about. That way, even if the game is crap, you have somethng to entertain yourself by.

you guys got your asses kicked by a team with a payroll a fraction of your overhyped, overpaid, crap team. Don't give me this "pre-season, we're out of shape crap". Your season starts in 2 weeks, and most of your players had been playing in the World Cup in June, so don't give me this shit about being out of shape or out of form. You guys got owned. Get used to it though, in a few years America will own soccer like it owns every other sport in the world.

I suppose the word perspective means nothing to you
As for owning the World, do I need to remind you about the WC

If ESPN is serious about soccer coverage and they appear to be with purchasing rights for next 3 WC and broadcast rights for MLS then they need better announcing team. The World Cup announcers were bad enough didnt think it could get any worse until All Star game today, it was a complete distraction to the game. All ESPN announcers should be forced to watch Fox Soccer telecast to learn how to do their job, both the regular EPL announcers and the Fox guy who does announcing for Italy, German league games.

Wow. You need to relax, mate. For goodness sake no need to go that far. "Crap team" okay, not even the Arsenal or Liverpool fans are that unreasonable. You talk about the world cup. Well if you add it all up many of those players participated in League cups, CL, and League games adding up to about 50 or so matches each. Add the world cup matches as well. Fitness was a factor. We played terribly, had no fluidity, and looked disinterested to be quite honest. I honestly don't see how we were "owned" in anyway, but your arrogance is bemusing as it was the same arrogance that led to an early loss in the WC. Please, if this pre-season game a harbringer for American domination in world football, then you just keep believing that. IMO its more of a red herring. :D

ESPN has very few qualified football announcers. One is Tommy Smyth (sp?) and whoever his partner is...name has escaped me. Other than them, I haven't heard anyone that I liked.

Tommy Smyth is pretty bad actually, his partner IIRC Mike Smith, is quite good though. There are so many problems with the current crop of commentators, I wouldnt know where to begin.

The announcers were picked to explain the game to the average ESPN sports fan and certainly aren't intended to appeal to people who know anything about the game. They're a lot like mormon missionaries riding their bicycles through the sports neighborhoods, searching for converts.

Sad thing is that I would rather listen to those Missionaries than Wynalda and Co.

That may be the case. I also do not get FSC or GolTV, so he is the best I can get. It's all I have to go on.

Hey Im just being picky. Best thing you can do is watch the games in silence or on the Spanish channels. If you can get to a bar to watch the FSC, the commentry is quite good, although some of the "colour" guys can be a little biased.

Yeah but they arent even doing that, like gee thanks announcers can you talk more about SWP's size. I could see and understand it if they were explaining aspects of the game, something that was annoying (Im sure even the most ignorant soccer fan can understand the offside rule after its explained 5 times) during WC games but was atleast tolerable by some of the announcers but today's game was nothing of value even to those fans. Instead all we hear about is SWP's size and payroll of Chelsea evey 5 mins. They didnt even announce the subs for the second half :)
There has to be a middle ground of trying to sell the 'product' to average sport fans and still providing intelligent announcing for *football* fans.

Mike Smith and Derek Rae are top ESPN announcers, and they call English language broadcasts of Champions League games for ESPN International, generally from a studio in Connecticut.
But, they have accents, and thus ESPN things that an American audience won't listen to them. Nonsense, really, but anyway. So, we're stuck with a baseball announcer (O'Brien) who likes to call soccer though he knows nothing about it, and Wynalda, who is an ex-player and a current jackass.
Yes, it would be nice if ESPN upgraded their crew, but there are precious few Americans up to the task. JP Dellacamera has been calling soccer games for 20 years, and is probably the most accomplished, but he's still not exactly world class.
As for the game, it was pre-season for Chelsea and they played like it. You can't read anything into it. MLS allstars played an in-shape Real team and got smoked a few years ago, let's not forget. All-around, it was an interesting game, which is more than you can say for most all-star exhibitions, but it certainly doesn't "mean" anything.
