France's Ribery now wants to leave Marseille
PARIS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - A few days after pledging his future to Olympique Marseille, France midfielder Franck Ribery said on Friday he wanted to leave the French club.
"My wish is to leave Marseille," France's top prospect told French television.
"I want to play the Champions League and to keep improving. The (Marseille) club officials know where I want to go and the club I wish to sign for also know it. Now they (both clubs) have to reach an agreement."
Ribery had said on Monday that he planned to stay at Marseille for the next four years. The next day, Marseille chairman Pape Diouf said Ribery would definitely play for Marseille for at least another season.
The gifted 23-year-old burst into the limelight at the World Cup, helping France reach the final. He has been courted by French champions Olympique Lyon and several European clubs including Manchester United.
The energetic Ribery, who is being hailed as the next Zinedine Zidane, resumed training on Monday after returning from holiday.
He had been expected back on Saturday but Marseille officials accepted his request to return two days late.
The Ligue 1 season kicks off this weekend.

i'd be a bit worried if we signed ribery. he seems to be a disruptive personality and has now played for about 5 different clubs in his short career, with another move on the horizon. im not doubting his talent, he look like he will be great but i just worry if we got him, he could become a great player and he will be off. with his history of moving clubs he will always be a player linked with other clubs every transfer window

Who knows? With Reyes looking like he's off, Ribery might be the one to replace him. I suspect it might be Lyon he's wanting to join though.

Well, he played for Marseille's previous coach at Metz also and he wsa a deciding factor in geting him to Marseille, and Ribery was doing fine until Fernandez was left/let go from Marseille for this coming season. So I think he would and does thrive under a manager who will overlook his progression, like Fernandez did.

The fact that he's played for 5 or 6clubs in a short time means nothing. The first few were tiny clubs that nobody's ever heard of, so its obvious that he would leave them to progress his career and seek bigger pastures. He signed for a smaller team in the French top flight, left for bigger Galatasaray and had his only real dispute. He goes to probably the biggest French club there is, and goes on to thrive there and for the national side. Plays well in the world cup, bigger European clubs come calling. I don't see his movements as sign of a volatile player, but as a sign of continued progression as a footballer considering where he started.

Can't see Marseilles letting him go to Lyon. Diouf, the Marseilles chairman HATES Aulas, the Lyon chairman. If Reyes leaves then Ribery would be a good replacement for you guys.

Maybe he'll be off to Rangers. *shrug* I don't really picture him coming to Arsenal this season.

I think Ribery would be a fine addition to Arsenal, especially with Reyes possibly gone soon. I think I'd prefer having Ribery over Reyes if I was given the choice, though we'd have to see how Ribery settles into the EPL. Wenger's been pretty quiet lately on the transfer front, which just makes me a little suspicious that maybe he's been looking at bringing in Ribery.

ever since there was the story (pre-world cup) about Henry bonding with Ribery at training i said, "bring him in". During/after the world cup after seeing his talents i was very excited to have him linked with the Arsenal. I really hope he comes to us, even more now that Reyes looks to be eyeing a bigger wage. And i agree, Wenger the last couple of days has been very quiet about brining anyone in. Hopefully Wenger will grant him his wish of playing in the Champions League, and who knows maybe he could win it with us.

Given the current situation with Reyes and his performance in Germany, I think Ribery would be a decent addition. He'd give us another attacking option without forcing Henry to adjust to another unfamiliar player. And maybe being able to team up with Henry again would settle him down and get him more focused. I'd say go for it.

I hope i am wrong but didn't Ribery before the world cup actually state he wanted to move to lyon, but with Reyes going i would love it if Ribery comes to Arsenal, he is a better dribbler, as fast as Reyes and doesn't go to the ground like Reyes

Amen to that. Ribery is the perfect compliment to Henry. I could see Henry's goal totals actually continue to improve with the addition of Ribs. And as you said, no diving like that loser Reyes.

I like to think that Wenger will straighten him out and satisfy his desire to get up the pitch.

Before seeing him play in the world cup, I though that swapping Reyes for Ribery might be a good idea. But after seeing him play, I am no longer that sure. He did have his moments, especially that goal against Spain, but overall he didn't impress me. He looks very raw and unready to play on a bigger stage. He has good pace, ocassional good skills, but lacks power and can't finish. Reminds me a lot of Reyes. I just do not think that he will be any significant improvement over Reyes.
If we can get him cheaper I wouldn't mind getting him, but at the present moment it's highly unlikely he'll leave for cheap. Which means that he will be a risk to get.

I don't think Reyes is going, Marca's efforts nothwithstanding, but Ribéry might be a good insurance policy. At £13M a rather expensive one, but one I don't dislike.

the quote at the beginning of the thread combined with the Guardian's story convinces me that its for real. Am I happy?
I'd rather have a CB/DMF/LB. But now we'll just be the most attractive team in football who happens to lose 7-4, 8-5, 9-7 every matchday?
god i hope not.
