Howard's on loan to Everton, and the best thing for Foster and United's future would be for him to spend another season on loan at Watford, where he'd be first choice and get Premiership experience. If VDS was younger, we might be able to keep Foster around for a year and let him develop more in the Reserves, but even then, what would be the point? I'd rather we get a keeper on the cheap, someone who could at least perform if necessary. If Foster goes out on loan, which he should, I think that Luke Steele would be our backup keeper, and that's not acceptable for a club like United. The WBA keeper can at least perform, and if VDS decides that this season is his last, he offers competition to Howard upon his return from Everton if Foster isn't ready to surpass them.

If you look at the other top clubs in England, Chelsea have Cech and Cudicini, Arsenal have Lehmann and Almunia, Liverpool have Reina and Dudek and Carson and Kirkland (I believe they're all still there, right?). Even Wigan and Charlton were able to field multiple keepers capable of performing throughout the season. I don't have the confidence to depend on Steele, or even Foster for that matter, at this point in their careers if they needed to step in against an Arsenal or a Chelsea.

While I agree with most of what you are saying, it seems a little silly to me that you would list Carson and Kirkland as one of Liverpool's 'capable' keepers while saying Foster is not. Kirkland will never be a starter for more than a relegation-battling club due to his unfortunate (and frankly, incredible) injury woes. Carson is pretty much in the same boat as Foster - great at Championship level yet still quite unproven in the Premiership, but with a lotof time on his side to change that.

I also agree that we (obviously) need a new GK to be VDS' backup for the time being. He does not have to be spectacular, and to be honest I would prefer somebody with more experience than Kuzcyak (sp?). Howard is on his way out unless he has a ridiculous season at Everton, and I think Foster is our 'guy for the future' and will fulfill his potential. TBH if Fergie plans to only loan Foster out for one season at Watford, then I think the best option is to loan out an experienced, calm and consistent keeper for a year rather than buy one. Not that either of them would be available, but a keeper along the lines of Shwarzer, Jaaskelainen, etc.

That's a good idea.

If SAF is looking to buy a keeper for the future, I think he should go with the logical FM choice - Igor Akinfeev.

Foster was phenomenal today... when he works the kinks out of his game and improves his anticipation and positioning (these things come with experience) he'll be a good keeper.
