Rumours abound that Wenger is to play Ashley Cole in our upcomming Champions League qualifier against Zagreb.

This would mean that if he were to go to Chelsea he would be "cup-tied" and unable to play CL matches for Chelsea.

Ah the joys of playing a CL game before the UK season starts. EXCELLANT :D

That would be good, either way if he goes to Real or Chelsea (more likely now that Carlos is staying), we won't see him in the CL. Good thinking le Boss

It will never happen. If we did that it would reduce the fee we would get for the mug.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Not that Chelski will get far in the CL anyway.. :D

That would be quite funny if it did happen.

However, I have a hard time seeing this happen mostly cause I don't think Cole would ever step on the field knowing it would disqualify him from a season of Champs league football (let alone that it would reduce his fee and Chelsea and R Madrid may end up looking elsewhere for a leftback - it's not like Chelsea and Madrid will be screwed with Bridge and Carlos as their leftback in domestic football).

Does playing in a qualifier really mean you are cup-tied for the competition itself though?
Cole would never play anyway.

Extract from UEFA's "Rules of competition":

15.07 "Excluding the three rounds of the UEFA Intertoto Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, and subject to paragraph 15.18 below, a player may not play UEFA club competition matches for more than one competing club in the course of the same season. A substitute player who is not fielded is entitled to play for another club competing in the same season's UEFA club competitions, provided that he is registered with the UEFA Administration in accordance with the present regulations."

Basically meaning that he can play for them provided he is registered before the deadlines set out by UEFA. However, if he plays, he is excluded from European competition for the season. Unless Chelsea get dumped in the UEFA Cup and we don't. In that case, he could play :D

If Wenger tried to do that Cole could pull off his numerous excuses and refuse to play for us. Anyway, it's a stupid thing to do cause it would significantly reduce the amount of money we can get from him.

Why would Ashley Cole not play for Chelsea? He is the best LB in football probably. I don't see why he wouldn't play.... or were you just taking a dig at Chelsea for not playing most of their squad?

I think he meant Cash would not play in the qualifier.

Matt....you're right mate...AC is probably the best LB and you have stood firm in your support for him while all around are ...well,you know the rest ..there's just too much hurt
and indignation right now.:(

Interesting move by Wenger. I wonder if Cash will call the Boss's bluff.

If Wenger plays Cole in the qualifier, we aren't going to be getting rid of him, end of story.

Chelsea will not take a back that they can't use in the competition they most want to win and will have the most trouble in.

yeah, it'll also reduce the $$$ we get for him, so I'm against it.

To be honest, I think we might keep him until January due to the injuries we're going into the season with. Also, for teams that are desperate, prices are usually a little inflated in Jan, at least that's how it seems to me. That's Arsene for ya.

im like the others, if we play him, then he will be of no real interest to chelsea unless its for a smaller fee, which arsenal wouldnt even consider. i'd be extremely surprised to see cashley even in the team.

Yes, see Adebayor last season, 90 percent sure Monaco did not make the group stages...
