Now that the rosters for the A-league clubs are shaping up, anyone have any predictions to offer? Will this be Charleston's year to win it all? Will Portland be the worst team in the west?

Very difficult to tell until the rosters are finalized. I doubt very seriously Portland is going to be the worst team in the west, though. It looks like most of their core players are going to be back from last year, and may be filling the open positions mostly with players with MLS experience. But they do have to resolve the goalkeeper position.
And they could end up with both Tennyson (if he doesn't sign with MLS) and Afash (already signed) back. The two of them had 36 goals between them last year.
Once MLS has done their final cuts and the A-League starts signing some of those players, then we'll be in a better position to speculate.

The Impact are trying to sign a midfield general to help replace Norway-bound Patrice Bernier.
With the Rhinos heavily decimated and the Impact on the up, it will be Montréal's chance to take the North East...

Like Alison said, most teams final rosters aren't set. That said, Charleston has signed 16 players so far and look really tough this year. The league best defense is intact and all have re-signed with the Battery and Ramsey has added some needed depth in that department with Titus and a couple others. I still would love to see a definate play maker on the team but with a midfielders like Chrono and Beasley, we could a lot worse. Up top, we look stacked, Conway, Henderson, Trout, Donnelly. Trout and Donnely look good in a attacking Midfield postion with Conway and Hendo up top.
I expect we will have the number one defense in the league again, and will most likely win the Eastern Conference. A Southern Derby win for sure and we will advance far in the USOC. Look fo rgreat years for Ryan Trout and Beasley to find the potential that everyone knows he has.

Too early yet to tell anything, although things should pick up when the MLS cuts start.
No way that P*rtland is going to be worst in the west, not when you have Calgary (sorry) in the division and teams like Cincy and Indiana in the conference.
Charleston look good right now, but we all said that last year didn't we?

would anyone speculate on peter Vermes ?.. would any team go after him now that he retired from MLS, he is 35 and in great shape and a leader, would be a great asset to any team

I don't think Charleston would want him, we are pretty deep in defense and experience.
