Evra, admittedly, did not have the most impressive of debuts. But he's also only been on the squad for half a season. He played very well for Monaco. He's not a big guy, but nobody doubts his pace. His technique also looks solid. I think a defender like Evra will take more time to adjust than most, because he can't just rely on physical domination. He has to adjust to the flow of the game, learn the CBs tendencies, and develop communication with the attacking players who he'll overlap. This can't be expected to happen overnight.

The clock will start to tick on Evra this year. If he still sucks in March, let's call him a bust. I'm just kind of surprised that people are so, nearly universally, negative about a guy who mights till shine.

He rules in Football Manager. Therefore, I will give him every chance in the world.

I definitely say give him more time to adjust. But then again ... I'm not all that optimistic about him either. Rio, Heinze and Neville are certain starters. Unless Heinze moves inside, I can't see Evra getting much playing time unless someone is injured, etc. So, if Evra doesn't get off to a fast start, he may never get out of the starting gate.

Personally, I think SAF is determined to make Vidic his second center back, whether he deserves it or not. That's curtains for Evra. Unless of course, he's used as a left winger or something.

Viewing things more positively for Evra, he's a perfect LB for a 4-5-1. His lack of heighth is minimized in impact by the presence of the extra CB. Freed of defensive responsibilities, he'll be able to get forward better. OTOH, I was disappointed how little he demonstrated in terms of beating his man on the dribble. I expected more of someone with a decent reputation as an attacking fullback.

I'm also a bit shocked by all the negative comments about Evra. He was considered one of the top fullbacks in Ligue 1, almost word class. Granted, he did not live up to those expectations at OT and he hasn't gone forward nearly enough to make up for his defence (or lack thereof). I'm willing to wait and see on this guy, he might be special.

Some people will dissmiss the Fm reference as nothig.. it's just a game. But what it means is that someone who is very interested in football and has watched him alot, in this case the moncao researcher rated him Very highly...

Cherno Samba was also a god in that game a couple years back. Take that as your grain of salt.

Yes, he was very Promising as most people agreed back then that he was.. but it was mostly because of a flawed match engine though... I'm not saying it's always right, but I assume that te Monaco researcher has seen Evra alot more than I have, that's all.

EDIT: It's only one mans oppinion though.. but my point is that someone who is unknown to us isn't necessarily unknown in his own country/club...

he gives us flexibility in terms of formations and lineups. although he may not be an automatic choice, he does give us another option on the left. there will be days where we'll need his attacking flare in place of heinz's defensive steel. he can be very valuable to us.

I rated evra before he came to united. i didn't see a ton of ligue 1 matches but i saw enough to think he was a talented player. i was most excited about him coming here because i thought it certainly would mean the end for silvestre.
i'd rather have evra at left back then silvestre, but now we have silvestre, evra and o'shea as back ups to heinze, and a very good prospect in spector left because he didn't think he had much of a shot anymore.

frankly if anyone offered us a box of chocolate milk mix for silvestre i'd take it.
chocolate milk rules, silvestre doesn't.

Too bad West Ham already offered us that..but they couldn't have Tweety so we gave them Spector instead...

that's ridiculous, spector is worth at least strawberry milk mix, maybe even banana milk.

Maybe SAF has plans for Evra, if he has pace to burn he could be pushed forward to left wing or maybe he will be groomed as a holding midfielder. Alex likes taking players out of their comfort zone and seeing what they can do in other positions. He's done it with Giggs, Smith, O'shea, Solskjaer, Scholes over the years.

Also, Wenger found the most dangerous forward in the world sitting on the left wing in Henry.

What does everyone think about playing out of position. Do you think it creates a more rounded player that can work in a variety of positions or does it just give us a team full of 'jack of all trades' players being master at nothing.

I agree with most posts so far - he hasn't been mind blowing, but he's done enough to convince me of his potential, and it's pretty clear that he is adjusting to the premiership. He has a natural ability on the ball, but his drives forward have been disappointing at times. With Heinze, I'm not sure how likely this is, but I'd love to see Evra really connect w/whoever cements the left wing position (like the days of Neville & Beckham)

He's a possible backup left winger, considering that Kieran is shite. However, I don't think he's been given enough time to shine. Silvestre was in pretty good form at LB for the 2nd half of the season last year and kept Evra out the whole time.

I know it says something when you're kept out of the side by Silvestre, but let's see this season.

No, we are not sure.

Personally, I dubbed him as "Poof" from my first impressions of him as a player, with a view of him shedding the tag by his good play as time passed.

So far though, he's still http://www.redstonemagic.com/artwork/SuperPoof.gif

Evra's best display's have come when Ronaldo has played LW. He's used to that type of player and Ronaldo seemed to make good use of his overlapping runs on the one or two occasions they played the same time.
