Brazil and Argentina will play a friendly international at Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium.
The South American rivals will meet at the 60,000-capacity stadium on 2 September in what will be the first fixture for Argentina's new coach.
Alfio Basile was appointed on Tuesday as successor to Jose Pekerman, who stood down after the World Cup.
The match will be the second game in charge for Brazil coach Dunga after he took over from Carlos Alberto Parreira.

I hope that the pitch doesn't suffer. This is something I was thinking about when we moved. Old Trafford's pitch gets pretty ratty because of internationals, rugby, and cricket IIRC. The cold weather in Manchester doesn't help either, but I hope our pitch doesn't get trampled on from regular non Arsenal stadium use. Having an immaculate pitch is a big part of our game IMO.

The cricket is played on a cricket ground next to Old Trafford actually.
I wouldn't worry about the pitch, this new fangled lighting thingy that they have tends to keep the pitches in great condition. I'm sure people will remember our pitch a few seasons ago but now thanks to these our pitch terrific all year round.

I was under the (perhaps spurious -- or should I say sp*rious?) impression that the open corners of Highbury contributed in part to the brilliant quality of Highbury's surface.

Having an enclosed pitch doesn't give the air circulation that the grass needs. Also it keeps it away from the elements which allows grass to grow nice and healthy. The major factor is sunlight. With a big stadium the overhang of the stands and roof reduce the ammount of sunlight the pitch recieves to a tiny ammount each day. This has been solved by halogen lights on wheels which go on the pitch giving the grass and extra boost.

They don't play cricket at Old Trafford, and they play exactly one rugby league match a season there - the Super League Grand Final.
The pitch at Old Trafford gets ************ because of the roof over all four stands which affects the ability of the sun to reach the turf. This is probably a contributing reason why the Ashburton Grove roof is level, so the sun can creep in through the corners.

Yeah, the pitch at Old Trafford was rubbish long before they started playing England internationals there, the enclosed stadium doesn't help it. Same thing at the San Siro in Milan, they have to keep re-laying it all the time.
Apparently the design of The Grove is meant to help mitigate against the enclosed bowl of the stadium. We'll see.

I read about this match in Metro this morning. Much as it is good to see two great teams come to play at our ground, my question is....why?

Old trafford cricket ground is an entirely different place, preparing a cricket pitch is an art in itself, the two couldn't go hand in hand.
As for the rugby, I went to a rugby league WC final there, but don't recall any others being played there.
Personally I'd rather they didn't use it myself, and as I've said before,, the resident NIMBY'S will not be happy

Well the NFL want to host a regular season game in London at Wembley and they wanted to do it this coming season but because Wembley are ********heads it ain't happening. There were rumours circulating that they would try and use Emirates stadium but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I think his point was that having a South American derby in London is a little bit strange......... As much as it suits us not to have Gilberto go on a 3 day flight, Im sure the Brazilian and Argentinian supporters who want to go to the game are a little miffed they have to come to England to see it............

Yes but we Londoners get to watch one of the most exciting teams in Club football on a bi-weekly basis
The point I'm making is it's a bit far for both teams to travel. I'm not saying I don't want it to happen, I'm just baffled as to why it is.

Not every body is aware that Arsenal endeavour to play the game on the same principles as those two great futeboling nations so it's rather symbolic that they should be invited to play at Arsenal's new stadium. On the day 60,000 people will be more concerned about the spectacle rather than the pitch or supporters travel arrangements.

okay but i suppose all involved will make a ton of cash as well as treating londoners to the tango/samba clash:D
