This is a continuation of the discussion here: http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=364733&page=4

The purpose of the thread is to narrow down suggestions for a team and/or supporter's anthem.

I will shoot for having the poll up in about a week if we have enough suggestions that have support.

What we do with this poll results should be discussed when the poll thread goes up. Moving forward with implementation should be not discussed there.

This thread is for making suggestions and debating suggestions only.

I'll update the thread with the list of supported suggestions every 2-3 days.

Muppet Show Theme - Muppets (Good to sing at other teams. I doubt we want to be known as muppets)

Well, they also play Dirty Water at Sox games. Sweet Caroline is linked to the team more because it is a more well known song, catchier, and easier to sing. That was my point about Dirty Water on the previous thread.

If enough supporters don't like Sweet Caroline because of it's link to the Sox, it'll be ruled out.

BTW, they also play the "Whoa New England" song at Sox games. Like Dirty Water, people don't sing along to it.

My point is that Sweet Caroline is a weak song and the only reason is has any association at all with Boston is because some Sox PA announcer years ago had a daughter named Caroline, so it stuck at a baseball game! It has nothing to do with Boston and is kinda slow. Dirty Water (even though the Standells aren't from Boston) at least shows pride in the city, kinda of a "we don't give a ____ if the waters dirty" attitude, which, against teams like NY or DC, we could finish "BOSTON YOU"RE MY HOME" with a big "____ New York" or "we hate new york" or something along those lines. and even by itself, the song is more uptempo and lively than most others on that list. some have claimed its too hard to sing iwthout the PA. well, we're soccer fans, so nothing should ever need the PA. we'll just abridge the song. the ba-ba-ba's don't have to be constant thru the whole thing, or some people can sing them while others sing the lyrics. cut out the ad-libing. just make it as easy as possible and it would catch on wicked fast.

and Dirty Water is much less of an institution at Sox games than Sweet Caroline. It's more of a Boston song than a Red Sox song. and no one really sings it because they only play it when they've won and most people are already walking out, so if we adopted it it woudl truly be our own

think about it, liverpool and celtic proudly display the words "You'll Necer Walk Alone" all over. having "I Love That Dirty Water" would look sick on a scarf or a banner. Not so for any other songs on that list.

I agree with the that. However, refer to my comments about the song on the previous thread. It's very tough to sing as a group.

The song is much less of an institution at Sox games for a reason. It's not as catchy and most people have never heard of it nor do they think to remember it when they attend Sox games.

Sweet Caroline caught on for a reason. They sing it at Reading games and I did my fair share of traveling in my college days and I knew of a few fraternaties and sororoties that had it as their official song. Granted, that may be a good reason not to use it.

The point is that Sweet Caroline is much more suitable for an anthem than Dirty Water.

They played "Dirty Water" once at tge old Foxboro stadium after a Revs game in 97 or 98 and boy did it seem out of place.

I'm one of, if not the biggest Sox fans on these boards and I love both Dirty Water and Sweet Caroline. Dirty Water is associated with both Sox and Bruins wins as it is played on those occasions at the Garden and Fenway. Fans do indeed sign along to it. Sweet Caroline is something that took on a life of it's own and is the local version of "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" (Baltimore Orioles) or "Cotton Eye Joe" (NYY), and Neil Diamond is leaps and bounds ahead of John Denver or Rednex (I'm not saying by how much either) that's played at the same point at every game.

Back to the point though, those songs are both 'taken' and do not need to be associated with the Revs or their fanbase. Dirty Water is a uniquely Boston thing and the Revs are not. The Revs represent the New England region, not unlike that Pats and are not based in Boston (well, not yet at least). There are plenty of other songs out there (the Jonathan Richman New England song being my choice) that we do not need to jump on some other teams established music...

You know, I thought it was just some chant the Revs fans made up until I heard it during BP before a Sox game in May. Thanks for pointing out the name and song title to me.

There's only two short verses and they would sound really good sung as a group. Just leave out the "doodley-doodley-do" solo in the middle and at the end.

I guess the lyics in the studio recording are a little lengthier than the live version that's on youtube. I really like the two verses in the youtube version.

Edit: That's the guy from There's Something About Mary! I'm sold.

My favorite late 80's direct order:

Just get on the floor and do the new kids dance! Sir, yes sir, indeed.

As for Aerosmith, Steve Tyler does a ton of cool things vocally when he sings which, unfortunantly, doesn't make great singalong music. Plus most of their popular stuff post-Pump is way too sappy.

Their best catchy singalong tune, IMO, is "What It Takes" and the subject matter in that song doesn't suit our needs.

I couldn't agree more. The words to New England are easy to learn, and the song is very singable. Since the chorus part of the song has caught on as a chant I don't see why we can't start doing the whole song.

One thing I am never doing is singing the BC fight song, and I have feeling a good amount of Fort members either attended a Hockey East or Big East school and even if they wouldn't take as hard of a stance as I, I am willing to bet it wouldn't be their first choice.

OK, I don't know if my upcoming suggestion is a joke or not. I saw and heard this rap once in school, and it popped back into my head. I Know it might be a bit hard and long, and a little (...very) cheesy, but the more I thought about it being sung by a large group of people the more it grew on me. So what the heck, i'll just see what everyone else thinks.

LISTEN (http://www.songsforteaching.com/geometryparkusa/atlantic.mp3)

Chorus:
New England and Mid Atlantic,
We gonna get silly, and we’re gonna get frantic.
Mid Atlantic and New England,
We gonna bust the capitals to a record spin.

Let's start in a place that we call New England,
A few states are located in this region.
The Northeast side of the United States,
Is where this rap is gonna infiltrate.

The first State that we’re gonna learn today,
Is the Eastern most State in the USA.
Maine’s where you go if you want some lobster,
The capital here is called Augusta.

And next to that, is New Hampshire,
Or the Granite State: if you’d prefer.
Now get on the mic and hit record,
We gonna rock the capital city of Concord.

The Green Mountain State is called Vermont,
The capital Montpelier is what I want.
Now it would be a big mistake,
If you didn’t put their maple syrup on pancakes.

Now if you want old school, let me suggest,
Princeton or Harvard in Massachusetts.
With schools so big that you can get lost in,
By the way the capital is called Boston.

Independence and Connecticut
The first to be free, let’s not forget.
That’s why it's called the Constitution State
Hartford’s the capital – there’s no debate.
The smallest one? Let me think; just wait.
I know its known as the Ocean State.
The capital is Providence, oh now we stylin’
The smallest State is called Rhode Island.

add another vote for the Jonathan Richman song.

and a possible sub vote for the Dropkick Murphy's if we can find the right song.

the great majority of the other suggestions disturb me. i would most likely not participate if one of those were picked as our "anthem". the Niel Diamond songs are the exception, but they just dont seem right for the job.
