View Full Version : The Transfer Fee Was What?!

Along with most of board, I have been thinking about transfer fees lately. The premise of the thread is this: What does a player have to do to justify his fee? I'm looking for specifics, both in the player and the accomplishments. Also, at least at the beginning let's limit the discussion to recent United purchases.
With regards to Michael Carrick, what does he have to do to justify his fee? Is it individual accomplishments or team accomplishments?
As for other players, what about Heinze? We paid a lot for a LB and he was injured for almost one full season. As much as we love him, I think he's probably in the "Not Yet Justified" class. Same with Vidic and Evra. But what about Rooney? Ronaldo? Ferdinand?
Finally, there are the players who completely justify their costs, including Giggs, Scholes, Fletcher, O'Shea, Neville, Brown. These are what's known as homegrown, and homegrown is the best.

The only saga I have really followed recently is Carrick. The thing is, to me anyway, his fee was not all about him. Somebody mentioned in another thread that part of the money that Spurs got had to do with the potential loss in earnings of the UEFA cup, and the possiblity of his missing meaning that they will not finish 4th or higher next year, therefore not making the CL. There are other factors as well, but they all inflate the fee for the player in some way.
For me, Carrick just has to be a consistant reliable presence in midfield, sort of like Neville. Not a superstar or someone who can take total control of the game and make it there own. He has to read the field and make good passes that turn into solid threats to the goal. He also has to break down plays, either by direct intervention (interceptions and tackles) or indirect (positioning), thus making life easier for the back four. In short, a solid midfielder. His fee was high to many, but United were desperate for that type of player. What he has to do is be better than what they had the past season.
IMHO.

West Ham received a percentage as they retained a sell-on interest.

I admit, that is persuasive, but what if he never plays another minute. Was he worth the money?

I believe a single player can only do so much and then it is on his team-mates to chip in and help him out. I will judge Carrick as an individual, it is not his fault if other departments in the team are misfiring whilst he is consistently putting in good/great performances.
As for what he has to do to justify his fee, well, as a deep-lying playmaker I would expect to see a lot of good passes from him, forward passes that put us on the front-foot and really unsettles our opponents. I expect to see great passes from him throughout the season as well, you know? The type Riquelme can slot in during any game if the opportunity presents itself. I wouldn't expect a Riquelme frequency rate (he's the best passer in the world AFAIC) but I'd expect a fair amount of passes Riquelme would be proud of from him.
Outside of that it would be nice to see him imposing himself physically and really coming out of himself, putting in more tackles then he is associated with etc, but these are niceties, Carrick was bought primarily for his passing and that is what I want to see him display.

Will we be in a position to reasonable detemine if the fee was appropriate at this time next year, or do you feel that he needs to do if for more than one season?

I don't think Ferguson bought him primarily for his passing. He assigned him the #16 and has already stated he plans on making him into a more box to box midfielder. The passing is Carrick's best feature but Ferguson saw more in him and he will train him to expose those things throughout the season.

Maybe you should say "develop". After all, this isn't Arsenal.

Whatever we get from Carrick outside of great passing is a bonus to me.

Why would I ever go to Queens? Anyway, let's just agree to shake hands when/if we meet at Nevada Smiths. I'll save my hugs for Ray and Jay.
Has Rooney justified his transfer fee?

Although you're right, I'd like not to think of it that way. All that money just for passing? I want to believe we're getting more, which of course we are (awareness, experience, etc...). but a bonus for me would be him scoring more goals than usua and his influence over those around him being visible throughout games.

Of course not. He has yet to single-handedly win us consecutive quintuples.

You're right, don't come to Queens, it's horrible over here.
Yes, Rooney has definitely justified his transfer fee. If you eliminate his second season alone, and look only at his first, he's done enough to justify it. We're in a transition period along some other problems the club is facing, and clearly we're not the team of old, but Rooney does look like a player of old, he's stepped up so many times, we excuse him when he dives and gets red cards ( kidding). He carried the club on his shoulders for two consecutive seasons now, and he's still young. United legend? you bet your ass.
