Gordon Strachan has shed light on the breakdown in relations with Sir Alex Ferguson, accusing the Manchester United manager of having bullied him during his playing career.

Strachan played under Ferguson at Aberdeen and then at Manchester United, after the departure of Ron Atkinson in 1986.

Ferguson has criticised his fellow Scot in the past, particularly in candid remarks in his 1999 autobiography.

The Celtic manager has kept silent on his rival's aspersions, but now claims Ferguson unfairly targeted the midfield red-head.

"As much as I admire Fergie for what he has achieved, I have to admit this is offset by the memories of the deterioration in our relationship," said Strachan in `Strachan: My Life In Football', serialised in the Sunday Times.

"As indicated by his comments about our time together in his 1999 autobiography Managing My Life, it would seem that Fergie is not too enamoured with me either.

"Those comments, which related mainly to my desire to leave Aberdeen and Manchester United, and included Fergie stating that I 'could not be trusted an inch', surprised and disappointed me. I know I made one or two mistakes in my dealings with him, but I feel there were mitigating circumstances," he said.

"One of the problems in my relationship with him was that the longer we worked together, the more I needed him to adopt a different attitude and approach with me.

"I needed him to treat me as an adult, not a kid; to have some respect for the fact that I was an experienced professional to whom abuse from the manager had become more of a motivational turn-off than a stimulus.

"Not long after he joined me at Manchester United and took up from where he had left off with me at Aberdeen, I remember telling him: "Listen, you spoke to me like that nine years ago. It might have worked well then, but it is not going to work now.

"But the screaming and shouting did not cease - it just got worse and more personal.

"His behaviour made me think that he looked on my decision to leave Aberdeen as a personal slight. At team meetings he would say: `Where do you think you're going? Who would want a crap player like you?"'

"In November 1986 he joined me at Old Trafford. It was a great move for him and Manchester United, but not, as it turned out, a great move for me.

"I had loved playing for Ron Atkinson at United. After being beaten with a big stick for so long at Aberdeen, it was refreshing to have a manager who trusted and appreciated me, and treated me as an adult.

"When Fergie moved to United, I had to endure the big stick again.

"It is sad that our relationship has come to this. One day it would be great to sit down with him and have a proper chat about our clashes, to bring our relationship closer to what it was like in its most harmonious periods."

The Fergie of the 80's and 90's 'ruthless Fergie' was not a man to mess with...if all the players from that era came out and said he bullied them we'd be bored of the list by 400th entry.

Strachen: I care more about a kind word and a tender hand in the dressing room than results on the pitch.

His tenderness didn't do them much good in the pre-season. Looked like they need a good kicking to me. :D

Well, I think Strachan had the last laugh when it comes to him vs Fergie. Fergie chased him out of United and then Strachan went to Lids and was player of the year. Of course after that he also helped Leeds finish above us for the last time.

I'm not one of those who thinks Fergie is infallible. I respect what he's done but I'm on Gordie's side here. Gordie is one of the few Fergie let get away who really should have stayed.

It's pretty much impossible that SAF is a charming, respectful man-manager when he leaves a trail of damage, embittered players in his wake, who pretty much all of the same complaint. I'm sure he's abrasive, domineering, and that he alienates individuals who try to stand up to him.

It's a flaw, but it's also part of his mentality that afforded him success. People are more complex than labels. SAF is a bully, but that's not all he is.

Fergie has certainly left a trail of destruction - Strachan, Stapleton, Ince, McGrath, Beckham, Ruud, Stam all got on his bad side and were promptly shown the door. He is a great manager but certainly comes with some baggage. I'm not saying they're right and he's wrong, that's just the way he does it.

Thought about posting it myself, but there are two whole broadsheet pages in yesterdays Sunday Times. Very interesting though.

Reminds me of Fergie giving the hairdryer treatment to Lee Sharpe for celibrating a goal.

that explains our performance the other week, fergie told strachan before the match he wanted 3 goals or he would batter him after the game before his maw shouted on him for his dinner, then took his milk money.
