They have a thread in the beautiful game about the best national team accross history.

This is the team I came up with for Argentina, using a 3-5-2 formation.

What do you guys think?

....................Fillol
....Perfumo..Passarella..Ruggeri
............Rattin....Redondo
Zanetti...........................M arzolini
.....................Maradona
............Di Stefano
........................Batistuta

I think the defense would be very technical and hard to beat, as well as allowing Passarella some freedom to attack. Rattin and Redondo will protect the defense, with Rattin more defensive providing toughness, and Redondo as an area-to-area link. My wingbacks provide width. Zanetti is a natural for the role, and I believe Marzolini's skills would have made him also perfect for the role had the formation existed back in the 60's. I put Maradona as enganche and DiStefano a bit higher up, and my biggest concern is whether these two can coexist, but it's just got to be tried. And Batistuta of course as a finisher.

If Distefano and Maradona can work out their roles and develop sinergy, this team would be very tough to beat, even by the best Italian, German or Brazilian teams.

Although, if Di Stefano weren't in the squad, who would you guys put in? Personally, Kempes is my choice.

I presume you keep Pasarella, so you'd put Ayala over Ruggeri or Perfumo?

If we line up Maradona deep, I'd say Kempes, or maybe Sivori. Or possibly I'd put somebody like Ardiles, and have Maradona play higher up. Ardiles could play the Burruchaga role, but I'd think he is a bit of an upgrade. Of course, Maradona will have complete freedom. I'd think Di Stefano should be able to work with him though.

Di Stefano maybe, but Maradona I don't really think so.
