After all, Llorenc Ferrer, AEK's manager, was at Barca when they were dishing about big money on mistakes (think Geovanni, who was transferred there for 20 million Euros). Hopefully he hasn't lost that mistaken touch and he'll dish out a nice sum to get Vargas.

On a totally different note, I'll be doing a bit more coverage on PSG because my family, well, those members living in France anyway, got season tickets. I hope, though, that many of the huge stars in the making ASM has, like Mangani/Zola/Nimani/Ménez/Schwechlen/Malaury Martin/Pino, will rise to the occasion.

AEK Athens tries to get Vargas on loan and not to buy him. Actually they have spend most of their budget to get Rivaldo and Arouabarena so to get Vargas on loan is the most they could hope.

Are there any news about Vargas in French newspapers today?

« Jérémy, comment vous sentez-vous à quelques jours de la reprise du Championnat ?
Je me sens bien. Le début de saison, c'est toujours une étape difficile car on fait beaucoup d'efforts. Mais en tant que joueur, on est toujours pressé de retrouver la compétition. J'ai hâte d'y être.

Quel bilan tirez-vous de vos cinq matches amicaux (2V, 2D, 1N) ?
On ne va pas dire que notre bilan est positif. Pour ce début de Championnat, ce sera à nous d'élever notre niveau de jeu. On sait de quoi nous sommes capables. On va se battre à fond.

Est-ce que l'arrivée de Ricardo a changé beaucoup de choses à Monaco ?
Non. C'est quelqu'un d'intelligent et de discret. Les entraînements n'ont pas beaucoup changé. Je dirais même que nous sommes dans la continuité de l'année dernière. Et ça, c'est bien pour le club et pour nous.

Après une saison en demi-teinte de Monaco, est-ce que vous avez songé à partir ?
Non, pas du tout. Pour moi, il n'a jamais été question de partir. Ça fait un an que je suis ici. Monaco est un grand club. Je veux grandir avec lui et il faut que l'on redonne une image de haut de tableau à ce club. On va essayer de le faire dès cette année.

Mais comment avez-vous vécu l'année précédente ?
Je suis venu ici pour franchir un palier. C'était mon premier transfert. J'étais encore très jeune et j'ai connu six mois difficiles. Mais après, tout s'est mis en place. Le club a eu confiance en moi et j'ai pu aligner des bonnes performances lors de la deuxième partie de saison.

Justement, sentez-vous une attente grandissante à votre égard ?
Oui, je le sens. Ça fait plaisir même. Ça veut dire que l'on croit en moi et que j'ai les qualités pour bien jouer. Maintenant, c'est à moi de travailler et de montrer ce que je sais faire sans me mettre de pression. Il faut que je joue mon jeu pour aider l'équipe le plus possible.

Vous parlez de pression. Commence-t-elle vraiment à se faire sentir ?
Je ne me prends pas la tête. Si le club marche bien, ça veut dire que je marcherais bien aussi. Je pense déjà à l'équipe. Après, sur le plan personnel, ça viendra tout seul.

Et quels sont vos objectifs personnels ?
J'ai marqué sept buts l'année dernière donc c'est vrai que j'aimerais bien en mettre plus cette année.

Frédéric Piquionne parlait d'accrocher une place en Ligue des champions en fin de saison. Est-ce un objectif du club ?
Quand on joue à Monaco, on pense à la Ligue des champions, c'est sûr. On se dit que nous aussi, on aimerait bien la disputer. On a certes un groupe de qualité mais il va falloir attendre quelques matches avant de se fixer un vrai objectif. Si nous tirons tous dans le même sens, la Ligue des champions sera abordable en fin de saison. L'année dernière, nos six premiers mois ont été fatals à notre classement final. Alors pour aller en Ligue des champions, il va falloir faire une saison complète. Le mot d'ordre, c'est le travail.

Avez-vous des garanties pour une place de titulaire ?
Le coach m'a parlé. Il m'a dit qu'il me faisait confiance. J'ai 20 ans maintenant et c'est à moi de prouver que je peux apporter à cette équipe. On compte sur moi désormais.

Et vous préférez évoluer à quel poste ?
Personnellement, je pense être un milieu offensif. Pour l'instant, je joue surtout sur l'aile gauche. J'aime bien donc je ne me prends pas la tête. Je suis là pour jouer au football. C'est ça l'important.»

In other headlines, big Frédéric Nimani was loaned out to Lorient :(, which is sad because I had hoped to see him play. Hopefully he'll develop there though and then come back because he's got a lot of tools.

Oh, and other important note is that Flavio Roma has been appointed captain this season, not a bad decision if you ask me.

It would appear as if it's so much for Ricardo giving Berthod a starting role, as it's Muratori who's at left back.

Not exactly the lineup I would have started. Ricardo obviously sees something in Muratori that I don't. Then again, perhaps not, as Muratori commits a foul that definitely looked that it would give Saint-Etienne a spot kick. Though it's not called.

1-1 after 50 min. Piquionne scored a minute before HT as he got a bit of revenge against his former team. Modesto, though, brushed Ilan with his arm, giving l'ASSE a penalty which would be converted.

Yuck. That's all I can say, though with that in mind, it's a good result. Other than a 10-minute stretch in the second half, Saint-Etienne dictated the game. Flavio Roma deserves his captaincy because without him, it could have been 3-1, 4-1, though it wasn't so much the shots on goal as it was that they controlled the game. Why is Muratori starting again? Modesto? Pino was quite disappointing as well. Kallon didn't do anything either. Ménez was sub-par. In the end, though, 1 point isn't bad, and actually, it'd be something to celebrate.

L’ASM attend du neuf

Avec une seule arrivée (Berthod), le club de la Principauté n’a guère affolé le marché des transferts. Ricardo, le nouveau technicien, espère encore au moins une recrue. Mais la situation du club n’est pas évidente à gérer.

Jérémy Berthod doit se sentir bien seul. A ce jour, le latéral gauche constitue l’unique recrue de l’AS Monaco. Et encore, l’ancien Lyonnais n’a pas été aligné samedi dernier par Ricardo pour l’ouverture du championnat. Le technicien brésilien lui a préféré le jeune et inexpérimenté Muratori, en grandes difficultés face aux Stéphanois. Devant ce tableau, l’inquiétude commence à gagner les supporters du club de la Principauté. Ils aimeraient voir débarquer d’autres éléments, afin de redorer le blason du septuple champion de France.

Mais ils ne voient rien venir. Les dirigeants asémistes jouent au jeu du chat et de la souris. Ils préfèrent botter en touche lorsque le volet arrivées est évoqué : « On verra d’ici le 31 août », clame l’un d’eux. Les priorités de recrutement changent au gré du temps. Un jour, un milieu offensif droit (Giuly, Castelen) est recherché. Puis, il s’agit d’un milieu axial ou encore d’un latéral droit. Des pistes existent pour ce dernier poste. Des contacts plus ou moins avancés auraient existé avec Noé Pamarot (Portsmouth), Adriano (Atalanta Bergame) ou encore Mauro Cassetti (AS Rome).

Un club désargenté

Aujourd’hui, c’est le nom du Rennais Bruno Cheyrou qui surgit. L’ancien Lillois et Bordelais réfléchirait à la suite à donner à sa carrière. Lié jusqu’en 2009, il prête une oreille attentive aux différentes sollicitations, dont il fait l’objet. Mais il se sent bien en Bretagne, où il pourrait rempiler. Des discussions doivent d’ailleurs se tenir prochainement à ce sujet.

Dans l’entourage du club princier, on prétend qu’il ne devrait plus se passer grand-chose au rayon arrivées. L’ASM se retrouve aujourd’hui désargentée, à cause d’un passé où les liquidités ont été gaspillées. Et ce n’est pas la résiliation du contrat de l’Espagnol Gerard qui, au bas mot, aurait coûté 1,8 million d’euros qui va arranger les choses. Ricardo doit commencer à se demander ce qu’il était venu faire dans cette galère…

Well, the article was right to trash Muratori's performance. The guy looked completely lost out there, definitely doesn't appear L1 quality, or even L2 for that matter.

I would like to see a Cassetti or Adriano, though neither appears to be happening, though I'm a bit happy they didn't sign Castelen, since there are superior, as well as cheaper alternatives already available.

I don't believe Bruno Cheyrou will bring anything to the squad, but considering how poorly midfield was on Saturday, he could. I hope if nobody arrives then Meriem will recover quickly since neither Kallon nor Pino looked good at making scoring opportunities in the advanced midfield role.

Finally, I don't see why Koller is all of a sudden bench material because even if the guy is on the decline, he brings a consistent effort. Kallon and Pino, who were both <<affreux>> (horrible) on Saturday, don't bring their best on a consistent basis.

If they play a 4-4-2 then thats the only way Koller gets a lot of starts. They play with 1 man up front so Piquonne will obviously get the start instead most of the time. Ricardo didnt recruit Koller. He's not in his plans

No doubt that you're right on that, and I can't critique Piquionne since without him on Saturday, the team certainly would have lost.

I do think 4-4-2 is a better system, even if it means that Pino/Gakpé don't get in the lineup as much because I think our midfield is more accustomed to it.

Pino looked as if he was lost on Saturday and well, I think I've slammed the team enough already, so I'm looking ahead to the match against Lorient, where hopefully the team will have some cohesion in attack.

Also, I'm trying to figure out when Ricardo will test our centre de formation midfielders like Malaury Martin and Distel Zola. Given how midfield looked, they are worth giving a shot to, and now.

I dont think Koller will end up leaving because the teams that are interestered arent really much better than this team here. I read that his family really likes living in the south of France so it doesnt make sense to move them for just 1 year then retire.

Monaco coach Ricardo is refusing to press the panic button despite his side's indifferent start to the Ligue 1 season.
The principality club head into Wednesday's clash against Metz having picked up just one point from their opening two games.
They were fortunate to earn a draw at home to St Etienne and then put in a powder-puff first-half showing against Lorient in the 2-1 defeat at Le Moustoir on Saturday.
Ricardo knows his men need to show an improvement, but he is not too concerned at this early stage of the campaign.
"Am I worried? Why should I be?" he said.
"We have put in an average first half (against Lorient) where we conceded two goals.
"But after that, we came back well in the second. I don't think we should exaggerate and make such a story of this match.
"When you concede two goals very early in a game, especially away from home, it is always difficult to come back.
"Now what is important is that the team continue to work in a good spirit."
Metz have got off to an even worse start in their first season back in the top flight.
They have lost both of their matches so far, firstly to Le Mans away and then Lille at home.
Daniel Gygax is still out with an adductor injury he sustained in training last week while Les Grenats coach, Francis De Taddeo, will also have to do without Cedric Barbosa (thigh).
Monaco are without Lucas Bernardi, who is still nursing a leg injury.
Ricardo, meanwhile, is sweating over the fitness of Camel Meriem (thigh) and Vincent Muratori (hip), while Arnaud Lescure (hip) remains sidelined.

Manuele Blasi has less than three weeks to find a new team as the former Fiorentina player has no future at Juventus.

The midfielder is wanted by some clubs both in Italy and abroad, with Napoli and Monaco leading the chase for the Italian player. However, according to the latest speculation, Blasi has not yet decided in which team he will be playing next season.

On Monday the Juventus player will be in Monaco to discuss a possible loan transfer with the French club, but Blasi would prefer to remain in Italy.

For this reason, Napoli are seriously taking into consideration the idea of signing Blasi on a co-ownership deal, a solution which would please the Old Lady.

Still, Blasi is not certain yet on the idea of playing for the Azzurri, but a final decision will most likely be taken following the meeting with Monaco.
