View Full Version : Dwight Yorke - not what Aus football needs

After recent reports of Dwight Yorke returning to Sydney to train with the team, he has bought it upon himself to create controversy in saying that he might not be here for the entire season.
I believe that the A-league, and Australian football in general do not need characters like this. Obviously he is not enjoying his time over here as expected, so added fuel to a burning fire and declaring his interest in moving away from the A-league.
I think that in future, the marquee players should not be signed just on face value, but they also need an actual underlying ambition to do well not only for their club, but for the future of Australian football.
Dwight Yorke has done an average job at this. Apart from playing the game, we need real superstars who will also promote it, and Dwight Yorke has not achieved this.
I just find it farce that a player of this 'quality' has come to our shores, produced some good football, raised the profile, and then after a slight increase within the domestic league decides to speak to the media about moving clubs.
As a 'superstar', and worldwide known personality, i think Dwight Yorke is, to put it bluntly, a crap bloke.

Well i still like the guy and what he did for us last season (being a Sydney fc Fan)

Furthermore the guy is getting pretty old now, i would've thought anyway that this wouldve been his last season.
here

from the SFC web site

Quote:
While he was keen to defend the A-League title, Yorke refused to look further than the end of the 2006/07 season and laughed off a suggestion he would still be playing come the 2010 World Cup.

“No way, I’ll be almost 40 then (2010 World Cup),” he said. “At this stage of my career I am only looking one year at a time and this year that is with Sydney FC. One year is a long time in football so you never know what I’ll be doing (after the 2006/07 season) but for now I am looking forward to retaining the A-League title.”

Quote from that article:
"Always the professional, the former Manchester United star emphasised his commitment to give 100 per cent while at the club, but he was non-committal about his future in Sydney".

Funny that, I would have thought that a 'professional' wouldn't hang around Sydney nightclub venues on weeknights during the A-League season. I reckon the only thing that Dwight is fully committed to is the next shout.

its all about profile boys- you have all of trinidad & tobago taking notice of the a-league.

Japan started taking notice when we had Kazu for that guest stint.

Sydney and all of its glitz are great for the A-League. I see most of the posters are bitter Victory fans.

Don't worry- you might actually make the semis this year!!! ;)

Big personalities and names is exactly what the a-league needs. It takes guts to take a chance on something new which is what yorke did, and do you think even half of the fringe europe and south american players would have even considered the a-league over other more wealthy leagues if yorke hadn't of come here first and show it can help your career?

Who gives a monkey's about what Trinidad & Tobago are taking notice of?

It's all about media attention in this country, in a highly competitive and chock full sporting market.

Now, has Yorke been successful in gaining attention for football in this country? Perhaps in the fickle Sydney market he may have made a dent, but the overall improvement in the image of the game has come from other factors.

I don't care what he does off the pitch i'm more concerned with how he will react to Butcher , i'm happy butcher has said he doesn't want yorke playing as a def mid.

yeah, that's good news. and wasn't he just playing mid to warm up for the WC where he was playing midfield for trinidad?

We actually have championships (Oceania champions and A-League champions)

Hows your cupboard looking??;)

All night is good for the game. Gets people into the stands and is always in the paper.

Forget about our cupboard mate and get back into your closet (that is, after the Mardi Gras). :D

You have won ONE A-League championship you TARD. Forget about that other rubbish.

Mind you, you'll be needing that trophy to store Sydney FC's ashes in, when the wind changes up there and the fickle bandwagon supporters go running back to the bum sniffers. :D

I'm from Trinidad and heard Yorke numerous times say that he is committed to Sydney FC and retaining the A-league title. And he hasn't just got US watching the A-league, but Europe and North America as well.

Forget glitz and glamour...those are baggage he carries from the past. His goals and assists and leadership have helped Sydney significantly, and that's the most important thing.

Look mate, good luck to you and that's great that you enjoy watching it. I was attempting to have a crack at some of the morons in this forum, not people from overseas. Of course it is positive that the A-League is being watched overseas, but in this country we have far greater challenges in front of us to:

1) Improve the image of the game, internally (it still stinks, despite what the media hype suggests).

2) Showcase the best available Australian talent (before they disappear overseas).

3) Build a solid base for the league (cement rather than sand or fluff).

4) Be equitable (every team to win a championship over a 12-15 year period).

5) Improve the standard of Australian players.

6) Just break even financially (at this stage).

But I'm sorry, if you listen to some of the Sydney wankers on this forum you will feel like you're back in New York in the early 1970's.

Well, media and football is always a mix and match, a bit of here and there and any news good or bad is publicity for the A-league. Will it improve more international players? Maybe but it does raise a profile and register what the playing level it is at compared to the rest of the world leagues.

Hang loose guys.

The only reason we do it is to stir up the natives from Mexico. After hearing over a year of utter drivel coming from mvfc etc about how good melbourne is/was/going to be- we're allowed a good dig or two.

After all we are the Champions!!! :D

Yorke has been everything he was hyped up to be...a noise maker, whether it be on or off the field. He helped to promote Sydney FC with all his off field shenanigans. The one thing I would say against him is that, his price tag is too much for what he is doing. If it is true that he gets 800,000 - 1million a year then thats way too much. Something in the range of 500k-600k would have been sufficient. His huge wage has put a big burden on Sydney FC's bottom line.
