well my excitement for this new channel was immense...You can imagine for someone who's never got to watch a match of his favorite team before...Will now be able to see his team in action everyweekend

sounds too good to be true...indeed it was, I emailed Arena if i would be able to get this thing all the way from Canada...Of course it just wasn't to be.

But they told me something that confuses me and gives me hope at the same time....Heres the last email they sent me...

Dear Mr. Baumann,

thank you very much for your mail, dated 10. July 2006.

Please contact the DFL (Deutsche Fussball-Liga) to get the information
which company has the rights to promote the TV-sendings of the
Live-matches in 1st and 2nd Bundesliga via satellite.

If you have any further qustions, feel free to contact us again.

Yours sincerely,

arena Team

Arena is a German cable channel, so there's no way you can get that in Canada.

I don't know how to contact DFL, but www.bundesliga.de might be a good starting point.

Your best bet is however the Deutsche Telekom. They have the rights for showing the Bundesliga over the Internet. Right now there isn't much information out except that from August on they'll broadcast all the games of the first and second Bundesliga via Internet TV.

If you want to find something out about that you might want to check www.telekom.de
But as I said, there isn't much information right now.

Well, that's what I found on their site:

"The World Cup was an excellent chance for us to present ourselves as reliable technology partners of FIFA, and also prove the company's claim to be the industry leader in Germany, and a top player in Europe. We've taken this opportunity and set new standards for large international events," said Raizner.

Football fans will benefit from these standards within four weeks of the World Cup. From August, Deutsche Telekom will be broadcasting all top flight and second tier Bundesliga games live on Internet television. According to Raizner, "that is a real quantum leap."

well the ARENA thing is 14 euro a month

well worth it, if you're not in the stadion every weekend

i heard with Arena...you get EVERY match, every summary.

You can adjust volume controls, so you can turn off the commentator and just hear the fans...lots of functions like that

In Denmark you'll get Highlights from the BL for free via ARD.

Btw, Arena is actually a smart name for a company. It is in one third of all the stadium names allready

I've done some research via google and it doesn't look too good. AFAIK, Telekom has the rights for worldwide internet broadcast. But online news sites frequently say that Telekom will only give it's customers of their new VDSL fiberglass network the opportunity to see the Bundesliga.

The only thing I found on the Telekom site concerning that issue is this:
The new service will make the Deutsche Telekom Group the first telecom operator in Germany to enable customers to receive Bundesliga matches in IPTV format - over various networks and in particular over the new VDSL network.

Hopefully "various networks" include your standart internet connection. I mean it would be pretty stupid if they'd only serve their own customers. That would definately cost them more money than it would gain them. Especially if it's exclusive to their VDSL standart which isn't even up and running at this point. And even if it's availiable until August, it's going to be restricted to the major cities.

I would recommend to email T-Online and say that you want Bundesliga via the Internet. If they get enough mails like that it is more likely that they consider what we think is the next logical step. telekom is a German company, they don't do logical steps if nobody tells them, trust me.

alright would any of you guys mind writing them an email asking them for 1st and 2nd liga???

for this season, 1st liga would be a waste of money for me obviously

Well, arena does advertise quite aggressivley and smart I have to say.

All saturday games of the first gameday will be shown on Sat.1 as a conference (??) and with split screens.

http://www.sport1.de/de/sport/artikel_242674.html

That's good for me as the 96-Werder game that I'll watch live in the stadium will be on sunday. That means I can watch the conference on saturday.

I think as a reminder of the great WC-atmosphere I'll meet with friends in a beergarden and watch it on a big screen there.

Good times!

Including move here?? That's the only way to get it.

Trust me, I feel your pain. I just got back here this past April and the USA is almost like Bundesliga hell.

I think the closest thing to good Bundesliga coverage on our side of the world is Setanta.......

well man you gotta get foxsportsworld.

you support BVB, they show LOTS of dortmund games, and you'll always get highlights...To me that's just a dream.

I get jack shit for Freiburg....I get amazing hospitality from the fans, and even the team themselves...I'm actually quite famous in Freiburg haha. But still, i have to support like a third world fan...which is no fun man

I'm going to Freiburg next year for a week...But my life plan is...go to university, get history education....Move to Freiburg, stay with a friend and work fulltimee at some half ass job until i find something better my education can give me....

now can any Germans here clarify how crazy that is on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the craziest :p

Dude, I realize my last message made it seem like I just returned to the USA. I'm sorry about that. I just returned to Germany from three years living in the USA.

I had Fox Sports World there. Their BL coverage is nothing to rejoice over. We didn't get the same coverage on FSW in the USA that you guys got in Canada. You guys got the much better football coverage.

I don't need FSW now. Like I said, I'm back Germany. I'm getting Arena. ;)

I'll probably be back in the USA in three to five years. Then, I'm going to make sure I live in a place where I can get DirecTV. I should be able to get Setanta USA, GolTV and FoxSportsWorld.

They didn't show "lots" of Dortmund games when I was there. I think they showed maybe five or six in the entire three years I was at home.

Of course you don't get jack s#it for Freiburg. Not many people are interested in them outside of the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) region.

I can definitely believe you are "famous" in Freiburg. It's not like they have this huge fan base outside of their own area. They probably think it's amazing they have a fan in Canada.....

I got treated very well at BVB when I went to the stadium just before I moved back to Texas. Some of the players and one of the club managers I talked to were amazed to learn about the number of fans the club still has in the USA.

That's cool. You'll love it. Such a lovely town and lovely area!

I'm not German, but I have lived most of my adult life here in Germany. I can tell you that most of my "foreign" (Mostly American, English and Irish) friends up in the Heidelberg area have done the same thing. If it's your dream, you can do it here.

Not only do I think it's not crazy, I think you can pull it off because I've seen it done before.

I wish I could do that. I've lived the years here that I have because I work for the U.S. Army. I came here a soldier back in 1988, got out here and starting working for the Army as a civilian here. So, while I've lived in Germany for most of my adult life, I'm still very much American. Hell, I don't even speak the language fluently and probably never will because I speak English all day, every day.

But I speak enough to be able to enjoy the life and culture here. So will you. If you're out there on the German economy every day, you'll be speaking fluent German in no time. It's not a difficult language to learn if you use it daily.

One of my best friends, who got here about the same time as I did, got out of the Army and has spent his life on the German economy. And to talk to him today, you would think he was born and raised in Erlangen, Germany. He's even an 1. FC Nuernberg fan now. A few years ago, he had no interest in the game.

When I speak German, people think I'm also from that region. Of course, I guess that would be right since that's where I learned my German.

But take it from me, if you really want to make it here, you can. It just depends on how badly you want it....... :)

A German girlfriend would help of course. :)
My cousin is married to an American. He was in the army and stationed in Germany, that's how they met. Now both of them actually live in Mühlheim, that's just a 10 minute drive from Freiburg and he's pretty much fluent.

I love Freiburg, I even think about moving there, such a great region to live in, a wonderful city and lovely people!

I had a German wife, but that didn't help! LOL!! :D

Long story, but we're friends now! One of the things was that she mainly wanted to learn English.

But you are right. Men learn German faster either through a girlfriend or chasing ladies in general! ;)

And those of us who don't speak fluently, seem to speak better when we've had a few beers. Confidence factor, me thinks.......

We used to have an installation there in Freiburg. I never went to it while it was there, but those I know who've been stationed there LOVE the place. I've only gone twice for football, but I loved it too.

That's exactly what I still hear from most people!! :)
