The new season is almost here!

Hopefully the mass sell-off of Sechzig players is done.

Abgänge: (sold/released)
Slobodan Komljenovic
Emmanuel Krontiris (Aachen)
Pascal Ojigwe
Rodrigo Costa (Lüttich)
Stefan Reisinger (Greuther Fürth)
Rémo Meyer (Salzburg)
Timo Ochs (Salzburg)
Jiayi Shao (Cottbus)
Marco Gebhardt (Saarbrücken)
Quido Lanzaat
Michál Kolomazník (Unterhaching)
Matthias Lehmann (Aachen)
Steffen Hofmann (Rapid Wien) -schade-

Zugänge: (new signings)
Danny Schwarz (Karlsruhe)
Markus Thorandt (Augsburg)
Antonio di Salvo (Rostock)
Gregg Berhalter (Cottbus)
Philipp Tschauner (Nürnberg)
plus a bunch of players from the 1860 second team and U17 side.

Despite the massive amount of talent to leave the club, they should still have a decent side. 1860 needs another defender and striker, IMO, to have a chance at promotion.

They definitely need to score more points than last year. They also need to sort out this controversy over their sponsor, they don't have the money to pay a massive fine to the Bavarian government.

The sponsor issue could get truly ugly, since there's now a movement in German legislatures to ban advertising for gambling. I wouldn't mind an empty jersey, but how can they replace the 2.5 million Euro from betandwin? This would affect Werder Bremen also, since they have the same sponsor as 1860.

The fine is only 50,000 euro, and it looks like they might fight it or pay it.

Also: Georgian national team defender Mate Ghvinianidze is on trial with the club. He is under contract to Lokomotiv Moscow, so a transfer fee would need to be payed if he is signed.

I forgot that Werder has the same sponsor. Unfortunately "Die Loewen" will have those ugly-ass Kappa jerseys to put that logo on, damn I hate those skin-tight Kappa shirts. They need some Adidas, aber jetzt.

The new 1860 Kappa jerseys are pretty nice. They were on sale for 2 days before the gambling advertisment problem exploded.

The away jerseys are green and gold, which are the original club colors. Also, the gambling company logo in question has been shortened to bwin.de, which is much less offensive to me than the full name.

Adidas Trikots für 1860? Bitte nicht. Sie sind alle wie FC Bayern! :p

They shouldn´t pay this. The German bet monopol is definite
against European law. When betandwin or some of the involved clubs
go to the European court in Brussel the bet monopol will fall.

The stupid politicans only do the actions against Werder and 1860
to curtain, that they slept.
The only organisation is Germany, which has been allowed to do bets
is Oddset, and they are definite not competitive.
The German politicans should have created a market
and abolished the Oddset monopol.

Agreed. But you must admit that old GDR license used by betandwin is a bit shifty. I'd rather that they stay out of the jersey sponsorship business. How messy is this going to get before the case makes it to Brussels?

In a perfect world 1860 would get Löwenbraü back as main sponsor again, but with Hacker Pshorr as one of their sub-sponsors, that probably won't happen.

I'd give these young boys a shot before I give up on the season. Most of them are very highly rated and most are on the German U-21, U-19, U-18 teams........

Give them a chance. I know I'll get up the A95 to cheer them on every chance I get.

Having followed them for many, many years I can say that I too am not expecting much this season. I remember back when 1860 was in the Regionalliga...that was sad, but still fun times. I do not expect them to get relegated, but neither do I expect them to get promoted.

As Footyfan said, this is a young, promising team. I think they are one of the youngest in the 2.BL. If they can gain experience AND 1860 can KEEP the young players, we have a good shot at going up in a few years.

Geduld, Geduld...muss man immer Geduld haben. ;)

Looking at the team as it stands, it is clearly a young team with many talented players U21...several U-x national team players. Questions are:

1) Can Schoko Schachner make it work?
2) IF he can make it work, can 1860 hold on to these guys long enough to get promoted
3) Can the front-office turn the finances around? Last time it took 13 friggin' years.

I'm optimistic that 1860 will have a much better season this year.

Agreed, promotion is pretty much out of the question, since the relegated Bundesliga teams are very strong, but I'd rather have a young, hungry and enthusiastic team from this season than the bunch of overpayed mopers as per last year. I'm also encouraged that they started pre-season training earlier than before, and have done well in the run-up games. Now beat Bayern! :)

As for the finances, they don't have a very expensive roster anymore, and it seems that the overall club leadership is sound for the first time in a long time. Also, with the puchase of half of Allianz Arena, didn't Bayern bail them out from last year's massive debt? If they eventually lose the 2.5M Euro from the betandwin sponsorship, that may be a problem.

As long as they don't go crazy with transfers, the club finances should be able to get back to normal in due course.

I'm not sure about the Austrian coach, since I'm still unhappy about the way they dismissed Ranier Mauer. I thought he did a really decent job, especially with the younger players.

From the list, Cerny and Tyce are out with injuries until the winterbreak, so the younger guys will get a chance to play.

It's a bit ironic that the government won't let 1860 (and Werder?) display the "bwin.de" logo on their jerseys and make some money in sponsorship, but yet ALL of the side and end boards in the Liga Pokal matches yesterday carried that same logo and the more offensive (to me, at least) "betandwin" logo.

Is the DFB setting a precedent, or are they grabbing the controversial sport-betting sponsorship cash while they can?

I'm certainly not a 1860 fan but I must thank them for their awesome youth work. Lars and Sven Bender are amazing talents that could even get a chance in the 2nd Buli this year imo. And then there are also talents like Mathias Wittek, Timo Gebhart, Florian Jungwirth and Alexander Eberlein whom I rate very highly. Good work! :)

That's a great thing, but I really don't like how they went about it. And this is where I'm being "nationalistic", because a very good American player got f#cked when 1860 went to their "Germans First" policy......

But, I've gotten over it. I feel 1860 got it's just desserts for it. I'll be up at the Allianz Arena for many of their home matches.

Which American player? Twellman? I don't remember him getting any first team action at all. At least he didn't whine about it like Donovan at Leverkusen.

I'm really glad Berhalter signed with the team, so now I have an American player to cheer on for at 1860. I'm going to try and get to a game in Allianz Arena too, but I think the timing of my next trip to München is completely during the Winterpause.

I'm looking forward to the new season, but I'm not expecting promotion. I finally picked up an 1860 scarf when I was in Munich during the World Cup (it was harder to find 1860 merchandise than I expected).

Don't lie Keith, you have not. :D You and I STILL bitch about Lorant's treatment of Twellman. ROFL

Keith is right though, I remember watching Twellman in 00/01. He had a better season than Lauth, yet Lauth was getting call ups to train with the 1860 I Team while Taylor was left playing with the II Team. The kid was taking German lessons and really committed to staying in Muenchen. Lorant did not take his head out long enough to see his talent. I hope that Twellman makes it back to Germany, though I do not think he will go back to 1860. For the good of his game he needs to leave the MLS. No challenge for him there.

I will preface my remarks by saying that I am in NO WAY a Berhalter fan. His abyssmal performace against Germany is a key reason I think he will just get used by 2.BL offenses. He just has horrible (my opinion) judgement and placement. He does work hard, but can't help but think he would not have to work so hard if he was just a bit smarter in his play.

Just curious why you think he would be good for 1860. Perhaps I am missing something and cannot see past his recent blunders.:o
