Things should get interesting for Rafa now that it is rumored Zambrotta and Thuram will sign with Barca. These are two solid defenders. Do you think he'll ride the pine or be sold to another club? Maybe they'll play with all four? I really doubt that, though.

With Real and Barca raiding Juve, La Liga is going to have another boring season. :(

I doubt Rafa would be benched as he has found a his niche playing with Barcelona. I believe he will still be starting but may get less playing time with the signing of two world class defenders.

I doubt he'll be benched. I see the backline as follows

Thuram Puyol Marquez Zambrotta

with Belleti as cover for Thuram on the right and Thuram as cover for cb and Oleguer as cover for both rb and cb. gio/sylvinho are cover for zambrotta.

Another option would be to put Marquez as dm

I doubt Marquez will lose too much playing time, who will lose time are gio, belleti, and sylvinho. Marquez did just sign a 3 year extension, that means he's part of the core of the team.

I doubt Thuram will play rb as he is about to turn 45 years old, so I expect Puyol to find time to rest during the season in some games.

Correct me if im wrong, Rafa has a 100 million dollar contract with Barca, why the hell would they bench him?

that seems more than an exageration.

after thinking this out a little more, i think thuram will be the odd one out because he is older than dirt. in case thuram plays, maybel rafa will be moved to dm like he played in the past.

I thought Thuram was retiring after the world cup? Regardless his reason for continuing playing. I don't think he is in prime condition to force the coach to bench Marquez.

You are wrong.

he is more than wrong.

thuram is 34 ... may be he has at least one good year left.

but like almanza posted, both are laterales.

zambrotta will not infringe on rafa's time.

thuram may, but he will probably take more of gio's, sylvinho's and oleguer's time (even though oleguer will probably play more than the previous two.)

he'll probably play d-mid because edmilson and motta are made of glass.

Rafael Marquez is sure to be in Barca's starting line-up, he was a key player in almost every important victory Barcelona had. Don't worry guys Rafa is going to be a starter.

Mexico, Best Team Ever! :)

that translates into 125 million U.S. No? How much of that buy out goes to Rafa, I imagine at leat 80 million?

the amount the player gets is negotiated later.

i don't know for sure, so i won't speak with certainty, but i would imagine that if anyone got an 80 million chunk , it'd be barca, not marquez.

In most European countries, players under contract can only be transferred (http://www.answers.com/topic/transfer-football) (sold) to another club if their existing club agrees. The exception is Spain, where all professional players have a "buy-out clause" written into their contract and can therefore move without their club's agreement.

come on people, everyone knows that lillian thuram is NO lateral! he is going to be 35, he doesnt have the legs for that. hes played consistenly as a central for the past 4 years.....

this is what will most LIKELY happen....

--------------------------GK:victor valdez
---RB: zambrotta-----CB: puyol---------CB:lillian thuram-------LB:gio
-------------------------------DM:rafa marquez
------------------CM:deco----------------------CM:xavi
------------AM/RW:messi-------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------AM/LW:ronny
-----------------------------------CF:eto'o

im about 98% positive of that.
you dont sign a guy like thurm to have him on the bench. he WILL play, and in his natural position, CB, alongside puyol IMO. oleguer as backup

that moves rafa up to DM which he has played for barca before and exceeded there. guys like edmilson, motta as back up once healthy.

zambrotta on the right, and gio on the left who is a very good player, dont forget. belletti, silvinyo as back up.
xavi & deco undisputed, with V. bommel & iniesta as backup.

ronny, messi, and eto'o undisputed. with ezquerro, guily, and gudjohnson as backup.

Man, with the signings barca have made, i think they can repeat last years double, and why not? maybe even get the treble!!

I hope so, Im afraid dinho has become complacent though. Word is he put more into Man U on Winning Eleven 10 than he did for Brazil during the world cup. Sevilla, Real and Atletico Madrid are a lot stronger this year, 3 times would be awesome, but it seems like this will be the most difficult year to win.

Also, Patrick Vieria might get signed by Barca, this would restrict Marquez to CB if it happens. I think the Thuram signing was more to give Puyol some rest during the season as he was starting to wear out towards the end of last season.
