View Full Version : What are the best World Cup games from 1990-2006?

I'm just wondering what everyone's opinions are, since people don't seem to be too high on the last 2 World Cups. I limited it to this time frame as it seems like all the great games are from before this era and I don't want crazy responses like pre-1950 stuff that few have seen.

Holland-West Germany
-- end-to-end battle
-- Played in San Siro... Klinsmann, Matthaeus and Brehme played for Inter Milan and Gullit, Rijkaard, and Van basten for AC Milan.
-- the height of Dutcvh-German rivalry.
-- Rijkaard vs Voller.... perhaps, the biggest incident before Zidane-Materrazzi.
-- great Brehme's goal.

-- the first post-Maradona game...
-- a goalfeast....

wow...i thought i was the only one that appreciated the end-to-end stuff of that romanian v arg in 94! That is prob one of the all-time best i have seen!
I also liked the Cameroon - Eng '90 game but i think i was too young to remember why i liked it so much... besides of my dad screaming like a maniac (and he's neither english or cameroonian
I think bulgaria v Germany was excellent.
I think 2006 best game was either mex-arg or arg-cot'd ivore

I forgot about Nigeria-Spain and Brazil-Holland. The England -Argentina game was very boring after Beckham's red card. Basically, England put up a bunker defense and Argentina has no chance of breaking it down. The first half was amazing.

1990- too young for me to remember. but whatever game the goalie got caught out of goal and was scored on was memorable for me. Was it Egypt's goalie?

Nigeria-Spain. The goal by Adepoju is in my top ten of greatest WC goals ever

i believe that was MR Higita, he played for colombia. He also did the scorpion vs England in a friendly. He was a madman. He was heavily linked with drug lords. I wonder if his antics were somehow cannabis-induced...
The best goal besides maradona's of all time has to be Diao's (Senegal) goal vs denmark. Any coach who wants to attend counter-attack football 101 class should be forced to watch that goal.

From 1998, I always thought Colombia-Tunisia was very entertaining. Maybe not the most skillful, but quite action packed.

- Who would have ever guessed Ronaldinho could have lobbed 'Seamen' from 40 yards?

- The shock value of a little African country beating a world power.

- 2 golden goals, in an all action match
Australia - Japan
- Stuff 90 minutes, all Australia needed was 8 to come back from 1 nil down, to 3 - 1.

Romania - Sweden 1994 was great, but the lesser team won, which made it easier for Brazil.
Belgium - Russia 2002 was exciting. (Belgium scores three goals?!) :)

i was at that romania-sweden. probably one of the best games i've ever seen in person.
i wouldnt say it was much easier on us, especially since sweden gave us one hell of a game. i mean, the game winner on a romario header late in the game? sweden had some quality guys then like brolin, dahlin, and schwarz. no real superstar like hagi, but they had a good tournament.

For 2006 I'm surprised no one mentioned France vs Spain. In my opinion, it was the only game during this world cup which was really at Champion's league standards. Outstanding pace during the whole game.

I like all of your choices. And I can't understand why some people have said that there were no good games in this WC. Germany-Italy not a good game??? In what way, may I ask? Is an attacking semi-final between two of the top three world football powers, decided in the 119th minute and followed immediately by another not a "good game"??? Wow.

Jerrito, look who wrote it afterall - Beautiful Game 2010. He and Zauras are the biggest Italy-haters on BS.
He's just pissed because the US got served in their games. Instead of worrying about Italy, US fans should be more concerned about 2010. You know, the WC that the US is supposed to win
