View Full Version : Landon Donovan gets nominated for...

ESPN's Mike & Mike Morning Show's "Just Shut Up Award". For comments regarding Bruce Arena's contract not being renewed and for alluding to Eric Wynalda being responsible.
My take: I wonder if Landon wants an order of french-cries to go with that wah-burger??? He is going to have to earn his place on the national team now and will NOT automatically be a guaranteed a spot in the starting11....so yeah I'd probably cry about it to.
But the segment on the show was great...Greenie basically told him to put on his big girl pants.
Also nominated: Zinedine Zidane - basically for being French and among other things an idiot. Golic ripped him pretty good.
It is great to get some mainstream media attention for better or worse. And Greenie went on to say that if Soccer is to be recognized on a more regular basis -- then guys like Landon Donovan better get used to critical analysis such as was given by Eric Wynalda.
Landon Donovan -- congratulations, JUST SHUT UP!

I turned on my radio this morning to ESPN Radio, just in time to hear Mike and Mike BLASTING Landon Donovan for when he said Eric Wynalda caused Arena to get fired.
you can go to: www.espnradio.com to vote.
Then Mike Greenberg RIPPED into Donovan saying, "If you want soccer to become bigtime, IF you want to be talked about in the papers you're going to have to learn how to handle criticism."
Mike Golic then goes, "Donovan is going to have to do something about just how BAD he played in this World Cup and ripping Wynalda for stating the facts isn't going to help"
(I paraphrased of course)

This is awesome - is there an archive of this or will there be a archive so it can be listened to afterwards?
Also, where did Donovan say that Wynalda got Bruce fired? Was that are article or interview - would love to read that as well.

Yeah, I think there was an interview on ESPN News. They played a portion of it on Mike & Mike yesterday. LD was just saying that "Genius" Wynalda (he did say Genius) had a big influence on getting Bruce canned.
I agree. This is good stuff. We need to keep up the talk about Soccer.
**Course, if they wanted him to shut up, all they gotta do is stop putting him on their shows and asking him questions.
Yet, he keeps getting called and interviewed precisely because they know he'll say something controversial....then they can tell him to shut up...then they call him for a reaction....and it goes on and on. It's all good.

Mike & Mike better be careful or SuperDave might neg rep them.
Seriously, I think this is great. Not because I think Landon is a puss who deserves the criticism - though I do - but it's great to see soccer in the mainstream and part of that mainstream is getting ripped by the media when you screw up.
The fact that US soccer's poster child is continually being called out in the mainstream media for a poor performance and for saying dumb things is a very good sign of progress.
For too long, American soccer has operated in a vacuum. Sure, everyone said they wanted more publicity, but the reality was the lack of media coverage let them do as they please with minimal, if any, accountability.
That's changing and that's a very good thing, though I bet some in US Soccer and MLS are wondering if they shoulda been more careful in what they wished for.

Also, how convenient that LD will be in the ESPN game of the week this weekend. Perhaps another interview in the works? This could get real good.

Where do you vote? I can't find it.

• Just Shut Up! Award- Allen Heckard, who is suing Michael Jordan because he looks "identical" to him, ran away with the award, beating Landon Donovan and Zidane.

Someone please tell Landon, the reason da Bruce got canned was because he, and the rest of his teamates, didn't make it out the first round. Not anyone's fault specifically, it just happens. I fully expect Landon to do better next time around for his final cup if he's still a good player and is in the plans of the next coach. To me Landon is still one of our very best players and its heartbreaking he didn't do better this last cup. I just didn't see the urgency out of him like we did in 2002. I don't understand why he seems to go through silent spells on the field.

Thanks for the link.
sigh, I'm too late. 2 soccer guys and they get beat out by Allen Heckard. Guess soccer isn't as big as I'd hoped. :(
But I suppose it was an honor to be nominated.

Mike and Mike told him that yesterday. In fact, one of them specifically said (can't remember if it was Mike or Mike) "hello, Landon, he got canned because you didn't put the ball in the back of the net" (paraphrasing, sorry)
But was he listening.

Excellent post.
As for the last part it would seem to include a lot of BS posters also.
So many here with little idea, who get offended so easily, and miss such simple stuff.
Freaking Mike Golic showing more common sense then many of the brainiacs here. Unreal.
Even if you don't understand soccer you can easily see BA's cowardice, blatantly hypocrisy and complete lack of leadership. You can see LD's meekness. These can be seen by any who watch and understand any team sport and there is no defense. Only by BS sgenuises it seems:rolleyes:
Wait until the mainstream media starts to understand the finer points of the game ven a little. BA would have been ridiculed and he would have been forced to step down immediately for a pathetic job on almost all levels.
Yet here in ignorant, naive meekland there are people who try and defend the indefensible in savage ignorant bliss.
LD and BA have skated for so long they think it's par for the course and acceptable.
How dare I be criticized with all of my loyal blind foolish sheep believing every word. There is hope and it's cpoming from an unlikely source.
THE MASS MEDIA! Just wow to that.
Then again if you neg rep anyone you must truely be a weak, weak individual.
How much mor epathetic canit get. Neg rep on an internet board. Gotta be a 12 year old.

Wynalda has been a jackass since the day he first kicked a ball.
There isn't much wrong with Donovan sticking up for BA - who remains, and will remain for quite some time, the best coach US Soccer has ever had.
There is something wrong with Donovan not stepping up when he was needed. There's also something wrong with a person feeling that a month's worth of time is long enough to draw conclusions about BS, this board, or the posters on the board.

Although I don't think Wynalda really had much to do with Bruce ultimately leaving, I actually welcome the fact that for once we have a bit of accountability/pressure from our media. We lag behind almost the entire world when it comes to soccer media attention.

Is there a link to an article about what Landon said?
This is the EXACT type of soccer reporting that never happens in the US.
Bravo.
Whether you like or hate Landon, thats not the point. This is two main stream guys talking about soccer and not "why the sport is still not popular in the US"
