Can someone explain how the rankings work and far many season they factor in?
I would've expected, after our finishes in the EPL and CL the last three seasons, we'd be up among the top 8.

Its based on 5 years overall. Which means that our two poor years in the UEFA cup before Roman arrived really hurt us. Domestic form is not factored in.

ok first off im not 100% on this so bear with me...
the points are worked out over a five year period with all forms of european football taken into account.not just the champions league.also the number of clubs your country have in europe affect the points you recieve, the more clubs you have the less points you recieve.i think...
you get points for your results and for progressing through the rounds.the better you do the more points you recieve, example liverpool finished over us last season in the group with the same number of points but got more points for topping the group.
it's a wierd system as in a third place c.l. group team goes into the uefa cup and wins another few games will get more points than a first or second placed group team who get knocked out in the next round of the champions league.
basicly thats the jist of what i know, good luck figureing it out ;)

Do I understand correctly that if Liverpool or Arsenal qualify for group play, they can become automatic #1 seed and bump some teams down. This seems misguided (I know we are talking UEFA here). If you can't even get automatic qualifying out of league play, how can a team be considered better than the league champion based on the distant past or bump an automatic qualifier down.
Although, in reality I suppose this really sucks for the #1 seed that draws Chelsea in group play.

No, they're already designated as top seeds. There'd be no bumping.

It actually makes sense - it rewards consistency in Europe, something we lacked our first two seasons of this 5 year cycle (Viking Stavenger was it?). I think it should be weighted towards the last few years, so as to prevent a side that was really good 5 years ago from getting a somewhat unfair advantage (and CL wins should count more than UEFA cup wins), but it does make sense. Just because a club wins the league once doesn't mean it will be a consistent performer - Werder Bremen won the Budnesliga a few years ago and, as I recall, went tamely out of Europe.
Although, in reality I suppose this really sucks for the #1 seed that draws Chelsea in group play.
Exactly. Although, given the seedings, we're going to be playing one of Inter, Real, Barca, Valencia or Lyon. What do you think are the chances we see Barca again?
Exactly.

There is a twenty percent chance for Cheslea FC to play FC Barcelona in the Champions League group phase. With recent signings of Michael Ballack from FC Bayern Munich and Andriy Shevchenko from AC Milan, would there be a realistic chance, not only for Chelsea FC to advance further than this past season, but to hoist the trophy "three or four times" during Ballack's tenure at Stamford Bridge?

Ballack's on a 3 year deal, so 4 times is a bit much. Is there a chance? Sure. Will it happen? Almost certainly not. Will we advance further than last year? Given that we were in the semis the previous two years, it'd be a good bet. Especially since we'd be favorites to top our group against anyone other than Barca.

Can't happen. Teams from the same country can't meet until after group play.

Anybody else have a feeling the "draw" will pit us against Barcelona once again?

All I know is the teams in the first pot have one thing and one thing only in their head for the draw--"don't give us Chelsea". I'm not losing any sleep over it. We're going to have a tough draw most any way you look at it, but I figure we'll find our way out of the first round one way or the other. Having the Italian teams out makes the thing that much more winnable this year.

But does having the Italian teams out devalue the competition? I don’t see why the Italian teams behind the disqualified teams are not entitled to take their positions.
<o =""></o>
But you’re right, I don’t care who we play (or when) we have to beat the best IF we are going to win the thing and it is as simple as that.
