As life, soccer is imperfect. Football, calcio, soccer, futbol bring us such pain, sadness, happiness, and joy. With every season and tournament comes hope until the day we see our chances start to slip. That day we sit infront of televisions praying for a miracle either to see it come true or shatter.

Soccer much like life, should never be associated with fairness. Soccer is anything but just. Isn't that the beauty? Whether a team loses while dominating play or in a shoot-out, the victory is only sweet to the winner, and the lose proves to be just as devistating. As followers we disguse our pain by trying to prove to whoever will listen that we deserved more, but as stated above soccer is unfair.

Only through this torment can success be understood. The ghosts that have haunted us smile back and only during that moment do me understand why we had to suffer. This moment of reflection is why we live ... this moment is why we continue to follow the sport.

Italy's victory proved to be more then winning a single tournament, but rather is a culmination that brings with it all the moments that have caused the italian fans such heartache since 82. The ghosts of maldini's pk miss in 1990, baggios in 1994, dibiaggios in 1998, and an overtime elimination in 2002 were all able to rest in peace on june 9th, as canavarro lifted the world cup.

As 31 nations full of supporters attempt to understand what went wrong, only one can say they are champions. Italian fans embrass this moment like I know you have, do not stop today or tomorrow continue until the trophy is passed once more, because victory is fleeting and you will suffer once more.
For the rest of us, take solice in that when our day comes we will remember how we felt this month, and victory will be bittersweat.

Why am I writing this you may be asking yourself. For the last week I have come to these boards and looked for every brightside of losing and somewhat attempted to take away from italy's world cup success. I am sure I am not alone in this regard. But now, the reason i am writing this is to truly congradulate the italian fans and i hope many here will do the same.

I know our pain has yet to relieve itself, but let us no longer take away from italy's victory. We can say that our loses were unjust, but italian calcio has proven to be the personification of unfairness. So, as you look back on your teams lose whether fair or not, just remember that italian fans have gone through what we have. Therefore, italy's victory should be seen as hope for the rest of us, because come 2010 and the club season in the fall, we will understand that with suffering comes great victories.

Sorry. Looked like more of a cheap shot than a joke to me.
