When Canna was younger, I never expected him to be this good, this commanding and intelligent. So maybe one of our young defenders out there will do the same. Remember, after Scirea there was Baresi, after him Maldini, Now Canna and Nesta. It's one thing I won't lose any sleep over myself. We always manage to create a superhuman captain of the defense...

:p
The thing was however, that everyone knew Baresi would step in sooner or later for Scirea. Enzo Bearzot had a major fixation with both Franco Baresi & Roberto Pruzzo. He claimed he gave them many chances and they didn't take advantage of their opportunity. Franco Baresi was Scirea's sub on the bench in the 82 WC and then was left off the 86 wc team.

The difference between then and now is I don't see anyone else to replace Cannavaro as their are no significant number #5's that I can tell. Maybe someone will step up. Maybe we should scout the Serie C? Grosso was in the C2 only 4 years ago. I'm sure there are more out there in the B or C who really haven't been discovered yet.

**Actually, one of the haters asked the brilliant question "Cannavaro: More hype than substance"???**

well, look where we post afterall :) A US-based board where the majority of posters, when not watching the NFL & NASCAR, are watching the EPL as their only source of soccer. Just so they can say the words "Manchester United" and "Arsenal" to impress their friends.

The lack of knowledge on bigsoccer about Serie A and Italian-based players (Italian or otherwise)since I've been on here (1 month as a registered poster and 4 months as a "lurker") is shocking.

Whereas Serie A followers have known Canna has been the league's best defender and, at worst, a Top 3 Central Defender for the past 7 or 8 years. Half the people here on bigsoccer practically never heard of him until that board about him questioning the USA's ranking was made up.

As much as our players are valued on the football market (2nd highest of all World Cup teams when the transfer totals are added up), they do not appear on cool Nike or Adidas commercials, like their beloved Beckham and Freddie Adu are.

well, well, well look who is the favorite for the fifa 2006 world player of the year award
http://www.oddschecker.com/betting/mode/o/card/footballspecials-footballspecials/odds/2566872x/sid/965748

not that this award means a whole lot, but it would be neat for him to be the first ever defender to grab the award. Apparently he also was a wall today versus villereal, granted he does have two fine d-mids in diarra and emerson in front of him, but still it seems he won't miss a beat in spain from his preseason results and the game today, not that I would expect it to be any other way.

That should help him get over the injustice of not winning the Golden Ball, eh???

(Nice to see Zambrotta and Gattuso getting some rep from the oddsmakers too!)

it will be between Canna and Ronaldinho.

Ronaldinho won the Liga and CL but he was a major no-show in the CL Final and WC which count for major brownie points.

Canna should definitely get it but as we saw in the Golden Ball voting, he's not as popular as other players and as such the bleeding hearts gave it to head-butt boy.

here's what I gotta say...Ronaldinho, overrated, great player yes but does nothing most of the time when it really counts, he's super fun to watch but when it comes down to it he isn't the best player in the world...maybe top 10 in my eyes...

next the reason Cannavaro didn't get the Golden Ball was because they voted the day before the finals which doesn't make sense to me at all...and even so I don't know hwo you can say up to that point that Butt-Head played better then Cannavaro...by the way I'd take Cannavaro on my team way before I'd take Ronaldinho...if Cannavaro doesn't win then what can I say...people don't look at soccer anymore all they look at is flashy moves...Cannavaro is the best defenseman in the world without a doubt...a legend...

If Rio Ferdinand is worth £120,000 a week, Cannavaro is worth a hundred million a day.

Recent GDS article on FC.

He says Juve deserved the championships--they would have "won without Moggi." He justified moving to Spain becasue at his age he still wanted to play in another country. [Ironically, if he wins the Spanish title, it will be his first**. He also says he wants to finish career playing for hometown Napoli.]

I found this newly posted tribute to Cannavaro's Euro 2000 performance vs. Holland (one of the Azzurri games that I will never forget). Enjoy.

Actually, both Cannavaro & Nesta had played a great game in the final match against France in Euro Cup 2000. Those two however, were directly to blame for the final goal. I remember the next day I read they both received 6.5 for their performance. Had they not let in the goal and had Italy won, I'm sure they would have been given an 8 or even a 9 which no one ever gets.

Yeah, I remember that, too...
But actually Canna got a 9 from Gazzetta dello Sport for the match against NL, if I'm not mistaken...
