Think there was only one England-Italy game at Wembley in that time period, and it was the 1-0 win during 1998 WCQ when Zola scored. Cannavaro definitely played in the game, but I clearly remember Costacurta making the pass. The shock of it and all.
Not to take away from the legend of Fabio Cannavaro, of course. :)

Well, maybe Cannavaro made the pass to Costacurta who in turn crossed it...but Fabio's pass to Billy must have been especially brilliant! :D

I also have so many fond memories of Cannavaro. His performance in th '98 QF vs France was unbelievable. If you've forgotten, get a tape just to watch him.
For me though, the moment that will forever be etched in my mind is the 2nd goal vs Germany. Ball is served into the area 120' mark, Cannavaro once again positions himself perfectly to clear the ball which pops up towards Podolski 30 yards form goal. Cannavaro dashes at top speed, times the steal perfectly then gives the ball to Totti at midfield, who gives it to Gilardino, to Del Piero, GOAL!! This play had all the great Cannavaro qualtities in one brief moment - positioining to clear the ball, speed to get to the ball coming to Podolski, timing to steal the ball off Podolski, drive to bring the ball forward, intelligence to give it up to Totti, heart to do all this in a very tired moment and nerve to attempt all this at the moment in the game and not be afraid of making a mistake!
Grazie Fabio!
If you look at the video again, it's more like Cannavaro tries to take it up himself but Totti comes and steals the ball from him...:D

I think his performance was legendary. His name belongs with the likes of Baresi and Maldini.

The man was outstanding!! He was a true leader. He deserved the award more than Zidane. Now, with Juve getting a possible stiff punishment and Capello in Madrid, I hope he doesn't leave Italy.

This was the game they bandaged up his head, correct? I forget which French player, but someone gave him a real good crack.
I've always loved Cannavaro. Shocked at his low transfer fee from Inter to Juve. I'm sure you'll see at least a $10mm fee now. Nesta seems to get more of the press and attention (well at least until now), but I always felt Cannavaro was worthy of equal praise. That centerback combo has got to be one of the all time best. Bergomi-Scirea was pretty good duo, but I think Nesta-Canna might be best all time for Italy.

(narrowing my eyes as I try to remember ....) I remember Zola scoring a goal against England in a WC Qualifier off an assist by a defender at Wembley, but I thought it was Costacurta with the assist ... maybe we're remembering different events though.
I believe he had a very long distance pass to Vieri in the '98 tournament in one of the first round games. Memory is escaping me, but I clearly remember the play. He steals the ball at the top of the box, then sends it to Vieri on a wire, at least 50 yards. Vieri blows by the defender and scores a great goal. It might have been their first or second game of the tourney.

Yeah, and if memory serves me right, I think it was Stefan G'Varch (I know, my spelling is way off). I remember Pagliuca came rushing up to the referee shouting, "E un cartelino rosso!"....

Grande,
I don't know, man. Bergomi-Scirea really "stopped the world" back in '82 when facing Brazil, Poland, West Germany, etc. They were something!

I remember reading how he cried when he left Napoli for Parma and how bad he felt to leave the club he was raised with. I also remember how both he and Ciro Ferrara were speaking Neapolitan on the pitch while they dressed for the Azzurri. It was too bad he arrived too late at Juve. He went from Parma to Inter but it would have been better for him to go straight to Juve. I guess with Ferrara, Montero Pessotto and everyone else there was just no room for him. He & Nesta were blamed wrongfully for losing the Euro Cup to France in the last minutes. I think this gave him more motivation to play better in this world cup. He is almost 33 but he played like he was 25-26. I doubt we'll see him in another World Cup, maybe the Euro but in 2010 he'll be pushing 37 and it will be tough to play a tournament at that age.

I hear you. Pained me to say it : ) But Nesta when healthy is practically unbeatable. And lets say you do get by, Canna is there to sweep it away.
The defense of '82 benefited from incredible midfield play. I believe it was the best midfield we ever had. Gentile as your D midfield. You don't need to say much more. But guys like Oriale and Tardelli did a lot of heavy lifting before it even reached the back line. Don't get me wrong, Collovati and Cabrini are all time legends to add to the '82 case, but look at '06 line up. Nesta and Canna were basically the only two pure defensive players. Everyone else had permission to roam up. Zambrotta and Grosso of course on the flanks. Pirlo is an offensive mid playing deep like a defensive mid. Gattuso God bless him is the only real defensive mid, but even he would drift to attack from time to time. Camoranesi is pushing up, and then of course Totti, Perotta, etc. Essentially the D rested on Nesta and Canna. I know it's hard to compare because Nesta only played 2.25 games, but we know the results anyway and it adds to Cannavaro's greatness to say he held clean sheets (or at least no goals from field of play) with 3 different partners.

OMG I'm so happy I found this thread. I'm from UK but I love Canna to death! Just love his cool and confident attitude and also his sexy eyes. :D
For those of you who are so blessed to live in Italy, please post more of his news, pictures, videos and keep us updated of his recent apperance anywhere in the media. Many many thanks!! :D
And, at the risk of offending any Juventus fans, I hope Canna will be transferred to a premium English or Spanish club - as it would defintedly help raise his profile at the internation level more than staying in Juventus, and eventually he would have a higher chance to be rewarded "2006 World Player of the Year"!!

I must say, coming into this WC I thought he was unbelievable to be sure, but I thought that Nesta was our best defender slightly. But his performance in this WC just amazed me, it's a disgrace that he wasn't named the Golden Ball winner, he was immense in every single match. In my opinion this performance at this WC has put his name up there with Scirea, Baresi and Maldini and our other all-time greats in the defense.

Cannavaro is a shoe-in to win the Pallone D'Oro this winter. If he doesn't, then all the conspiracy theories about how everyone hates Italians and are jealous of them will be proven true :)

It seems like pretty confirmed that Canna will be joining Real Madrid, right? This might hurt Juventus fans, but this would be a better move for his career and also for the benefit of the Italian team.
The only thing I’m worry about is that Real Madrid can totally DESTROY any best defender in the world. And I’m not sure even Canna can create a miracle for RM’s defense line. The best move for him would be joining Barcelona, but this seems like in remote chance.

Cannavaro is a legend. When I started watching the Serie A in the 1998/99 season, I knew he was a brilliant defender but I never knew he was going to achieve this kind of greatness. He has been a vital part of any team he has played for, even scoring lifesaving goals and his performance at this World Cup has to be one of the best, if not the best performance ever by a defender at a WC.
One of the all-time greats!
Grazie Fabio e santo subito!

If he really joins them, he's no longer a legend for me! :( He can go to Barca, but please not to f...ing Real!
If he's going to follow Alex, Gigi & Neddy, he'll definitely be a legend and hero in the eyes of many Juventini! ;)
