Why do they constantly show themselves to be so ignorant and racist on the biggest stages in the European game.

Tha last of a long line being Inter Milan last night.

I don't know if I would say the teams themselves are, but their fans. It has to do with ignorance, and a lack of understanding and/or exposure to people from other ethnicities. (Although Romans were well exposed to people from Asia minor(middle east) and Africa.

p.s.

Race is a relatively new concept, few hundred, and is actually a non scietific way of separating people into categories. There is no scientific basis for race. Ethnicity on the other hand is a different story.

I'm not justifying nor condoning the racism from Italy, but Italy is one of the least diverse countires I've visited. I studied there for a semester, and I saw few people of different races (probably ethnicity too, but that's just a guess.)

My ancestors come from six different countries, but I happened to take much of the Mediterranean in my look, and as a result was treated like an Italian (which is why I never encountered people speaking English in the big tourist cities.) However, my Dad and brother look as Irish as possible, and they stuck out a ridiculous amount. My family took a day trip when I was in school, and they remarked that everybody spoke English to them.

Basically, Italy is not a haven for diversity. To be honest, though, I notice a difference in race relations between the East Coast and West Coast, but that could just be me.

Yeah we had some Inter fans shouting 'juden raus' in front of our stadium too. Not for long though :D

Mind you, most Italian clubs have several organized fan groups and where one of these groups waves a swastika around, the group on the other side doesn't necessarily agree with it. There are even teams that have both rightwing and leftwing groups... Politics is a big issue in the supportersscene in Italy.

In general Italian ultras are lowlife, cowardly scum. Big boys at home, making hitler salutes and all... never to be seen away from home, cause they might just be confronted by an equal group. And that scares the ************ out of them. Let UEFA sort the whole nazi ************ out and other than that, you really shouldn't take them too seriously. They don't deserve that.

One of the Newcastle Players (Ameobi ?) has accused Vieri of making a racist comment, whilst the black players were allegdly subjected to racial abuse from the fans.

Im not 100% if the fans in Italy are actually racist, after reading Tony Parks book about Verona fans it is clear that fans in Italy have strange reasons for doing things, alot to do with just being rebellious for rebellions sake.

That was Lua Lua who made the Vieri claims and it's bs. This coming from an inter fan of couse. But it might explain why Lua Lua started a fight at the end........ I dunno... soccer players.... they can be so stupid sometimes.

There are still a lot of neofascist elements in Italian life and politics, and that is reflected in the racism and anti-semitism. Remember, Italian fascism is not tempered by German guilt.

I like Juventus, do they have this element?

Don't single out the Italians, this behavior is widespread thoughout Europe. Politics and football go hand in hand, and most Italian teams have fans from both the far right and the far left. It would be a strech to label any team racist.

Yeah, Lua Lua elbowing the Inter player (I think it was Cordoba) was lame...the ref really set the tone for that match.

Let me ask you how many Italian based matches you've been to. Well, the last Italian match i've been to showed much composure by the players and fans. The last time i saw racist Italian was on the Godfather. Dont forget the most recognizable league in the world is in Italy. Lets think before we make comments we have no information to back up. As far as the Vieri comments do any of us know what he said... maybe this is really one sided but saying Italians are racist when it comes to soccer isnt fair.

How many of you have actually been to an Italian soccer match? have you even been to Italy, or for that matter, left your own country? As an italian/american living in Italy on an american base, i have the advantage of seeing both lifestyles-american and italian- from a personal standpoint. Never have the Italians displayed any form of racism during their matches, or on the streets. In fact, I have had the privelage to play against italian teams, both on a high school level and professional. As a matter of fact, many of my good italian friends love american booty, and too often times hit on my american girl friends.

I have never heard fans make monkey noises at a black player here in the US.

The fact that Italian dudes hit on women like a second profession has nothing to do with their behavior in the stands.

Unfortunately, these fans are a vocal minority. The vast majority of the fans I met and saw while in Italy are just that: fans. The greatest crime to them is wearing the wrong jersey on game day, nothing more.

Thanks for the update to my signature though...it had been a while... For a man who lives in Italy it amazes me how ignorant of Italian people you are, or rather, people in general. You should know that racism is a worldwide problem, not just in Italy, or Lazio for that matter; you should also know that those fans that are openly racist are a minority. Exercise good rationale in your posts please.
