I heard they were doing more massive work on the WW bridge (something about shifting to the new lanes) and traffic will be a nightmare. Anyone have any information on this? I am coming from B'More and given I have volunteered to work the grill for the SEs you don't want me arriving late :D

This might help... (http://www.wilsonbridge.com/pdfs/GeneralAwarenessAd_060523.pdf) (opens as a PDF)

I like the "bad action movie" font at the top. ;)

Looks like the one lane traffic is going to be the inner loop of the beltway, Best idea would be to hit 295South straight to East Capitol St. I would presume?

Drive to the most convenient metro stop?

I was going to avoid 495 altogether this weekend and catch 295 by the airport. My concern is mainly how far the back-up on 295 might stretch and whether it will stretch to S Capitol St?/NY Ave?/495?

If you're coming from Baltimore you can always come across the American Legion Bridge and come down the GW Parkway (which is a real pretty drive) and go across the 14th St. Bridge onto the SE Freeway straight into Lot 8.

I'm sure it's a nice drive but it looks to be an additional hour of driving almost as it circumnavigates the whole city (counterclockwise)
Is it truly a faster route? Say then 295-S with traffic?

And this is the road that enters lot 8 right at the Barra tailgate correct?

And this is the road that enters lot 8 right at the Barra tailgate correct?yes, the same road - you can ALSO get there off of 295 (see Red&black for details)

Chico, we have a phrase back home for your suggested route from Baltimore .... going around your ass to get to your elbow ;)

Another alt. route from Balt is to take 29 South. It moves pretty quickly. But that'll probably only get you into the same hypothetical backup on the beltway.

You can also do something like take 97 down to 50 and then 301 to Central Ave....which becomes East Capitol. A few more miles, and also scenic (especially once you're inside the District) ;)

Best bet is to listen to WTOP to get as much traffic info as possible.

S. Capitol (Howard Street)? Likely. I've seen rush hour delays extend from the 295/Beltway junction all the way up to the Howard Street, and this is a bigger deal.

E. Capitol? Quite possibly.

NY Avenue/Rt. 50 is where I'd bet it'd extend to, simply because it's the last logical place for people to peel off.

But really it depends on the degree to which people pay attention to the advice to just stay the fsck away.

Other people have suggested the outer loop to the American Legion Bridge, then coming in via the GW Parkway. That's way out of the way, of course, but should go swimmingly.

Another possible (and better, if it's possible at all) route to consider -- if you hear on the radio that traffic on the INNER LOOP of the beltway seems under control -- that is, if the traffic jam caused by the lane move doesn't extend all the way back to Central Avenue -- then take the Inner Loop around to Central Avenue, and come in on Central Avenue (which becomes E. Capitol Street when it enters the District). Or go a little further around the inner loop, and take Pennsylvania Avenue, or Branch Avenue/Suitland Parkway, in. All depends on how bad the Inner Loop backup is.

So let me get this straight.

Check out for traffic backups, if it is hell 295S to E. Capitol is going to be hell as well? if so then perhaps Inner Loop to Central Ave. which becomes E. Capitol?

Has anybody had trouble related to Wilson Bridge traffic coming northbound (say, from Richmond) via 95 to 395?

I was out of town during the previous weekend-long delay.

I was out of town during the previous weekend-long delay.

The previous transistion scared off a lot of drivers, and the work went smoothly (which is why they predict total disaster for this move), the backups were only a couple of miles on the Outer Loop on the Saturday, and non-existant on Sunday morning ( I know, crossed the bridge around noon and literally was one of 15 cars on the bridge.)

I think the I-95/I-395 route would only get hosed if VDOT does something completely looney like major lane closures in the Mixing Bowl.

You live in Balmer, right?

Try this.

I-95 South to the Outer Loop. After merging onto the Beltway take New Hampshire Ave south, which is the second exit. From New Hampshire, merge onto North Capitol, also southbound. Then hang a left on H St NE, a right on 14th St NE, and a left on East Capitol. As soon as you turn onto E Capitol, you'll be able to see RFK.
