View Full Version : Hey Argentines
Century's Best

I was wondering about the Italian victory and how, if at all, it revertebrated in Argentina.
I read a piece in OLE which said it was a victory in which Argentines felt their Italian blood bubble up and that it mentioned Argentines whose Italian grandmothers would remember their childhood days eating Italian dishes, etc.
It is known that much of the Argentine population has Italian roots.
So, did you guys really celebrate as if it was a "proxy" win for you guys, for lack of a better word? Or is this Argentina-Italy connection exaggerated, despite the many Argentines today with Italian roots and despite Camoranesi?
You probably know Brazil also has many Italian immigrants (they had a soap opera called "Terra NOstra" or something of the sort a few years ago on the theme), but we're far more racially diverse than you.
I ask because I'm reminded of an Italian newspaper who said in 1978 that Argentina was "Italy's sister in blood and soccer."
I'm also left to wonder because Italian fans were devastated when Argentina beat them in 1990. So that makes me think that if there is affinity, it's one-way, from Argentina to Italy.
I know this post may sound ignorant, but I'm really curious.

"One-way" affinity huh ? This is just too ridiculous. Listen we only support one team. I would be totally indifferent if Italy ceased to exist tomorrow, and my family has italian blood.

I am part Italian (my grandfather was from Italy) but I actually prefered that France win the cup. I don't really like Italy's style of play, and I usually enjoy seeing Zidane and Henry play. That I have some Italian in my blood did not make me cheer for them at all in any way throughout the whole tournament.. In fact, I was actually kind of sad when Australia lost to them with an invented penalty right before the match finished.. :)
And about Camoranesi, that does not affect anything.. You have to remember that France also has an Argentine player (Trezeguet). In fact, those two players said they dream of playing for River before retiring. :D

I still feel a little inclination towards Italy, as I also have some Italian blood, and I can imagine that in the quantity of Italians living in Argentina, many must have felt a little consolation that Italy won, even though they root for Argentina.
More than the blood, I have a little preference for Italy because of their lifestyle, which is quite close to life in big cities like Buenos Aires. But what is sure is that if Argentina were to face them in any competition, they would become the enemy;)

I think I kept trying to tell myself that stuff to alleviate the sadness, but it just didn't do it for me. All I really kept thinking was that we should have played against Italy in the semi's and that we should have played France in the final.
I also have Italian roots but, could really care less that they won.

That's all I keep thinking about since we got knocked out by Germany. :(
And the Argentine players would not have insulted Zidane in the way Materazzi did either.

It annoys me because I so badly want to see Argentina play well at the World Cup against a team like Germany or Italy. Then we would really prove to everyone that we are capable. Especially considering that (this is obviously an opinion) we were the better team. But it didn't show because football is like that- it's the result that counts. Player for player I think Argentina is better than both Italy and Germany (for the most part) and as a team they gelled so beautifully. But I've been thinking how truly difficult the World Cup is. You only get 7 games (7!) to prove yourself and by the 4th game, you have to do it within 120 minutes or else you won't get to play again. It's just mind boggling. Consider how many games are played during the regular season. Just 7 games is really astounding.
I'm still a bit surprised that with the new FIFA rankings we're 3rd?
Strange. In any case, we have several tournaments to keep us busy till 2010- Copa America and Confeds (grrr Brazil). There's hope! It took Brazil what 20 years to win the cup again? Italy hadn't won it since 82? 2010 looks like a strong possibility- and it WON'T be played in Europe. :)

Like you mariealus I am of the view that Argentina had the best team at the world cup. Unfortunately I think our manager got stage fright when it really mattered and his negative substitutions cost us a game that was there to be won.
I know this will sound like sour grapes, but Italy, in my humble opinion, are an average side who have managed to win the world cup by only beating one decent team, Germany.
If we could have gotten past Germany I'm convinced we could have gone all the way. But it wasn't to be and that's the end of it.
I just hope we don't end up like England, endlessly talking about 1986 in another 20 years time. We've not gone beyond the quarter final stage at the world cup since 1990, that is simply not good enough for a country that produces so many talented players. We really need to deliver in 2010.
A Copa America win next year would be nice though. :D

Ah, gracias.
Saludos.

It took Brazil 24 years to win it (PKs against Italy in '94)
It took Italy 24 years to win it (PKs against Germany '06)
It might take Argentina 24 years to win it in PKs in 2010. ;)

Winning the World Cup depends on what groups you get. We had 5 very hard Games, ivory coast, Serbia, Holland, Mexico and Germany.
Italy had the USA, Ghana, Czech Rep, Australia, Ukraine, Germany
France had, Swiss, korea, Togo, Spain, Brazil, Portugal,
It depends on the draw...

It really depends on the tournament. In the WC, i root for two teams with my heart - Argentina and USA. If either of them are in it, I live and die for them to win. Argentina and USA have yet to meet in the WC, so it is not a problem I've needed to address. But once both are eliminated (as has been the unfortunate scenario each time since '90) i frankly lose interst in the whole thing, and have to prod myself for reasons to watch despite heartbreak. I'm usually so bitter though, i could care less, except that i have a soft spot for any Western Hemisphere countries which are NOT Brasil.
Many Argentinos have family in Italia, as do i, so you pull for them i suppose. However, I know many Italians, and despite having family there and being descended from Italy, most Italians don't consider me/persons in my situation to be Italian. Hell, most of the snobs where my family are from don't consider Sicilians or Calabrese to be Italian for that matter.
If its the European Championship, i'll root for Italia and Spain, because they are latin countries.

When I think of how Italians "murder" Caniggia and Maradona after their lost to Argentina in '90 world cup, I can not found any reason to support Italy.

I also have family in Italia, but I never met them before from my moms side.Anyways I wasn't really cheering for anyone before the game but then watching the game I was leaning towards France to win.Italia? ******** em I don't forget in Italia 90 when Argentina defeated them in the semis, all of Italy was rooting for Germany in the final, then el caso Maradona.Btw I wanted Zidane to retire as a world champ.
