Sensation: Pacult fired at 1860, Götz takes over

That's what I call a sensation: there currently is much talk about Frank Neubarth, Thomas Schaaf and mainly Klaus Augenthaler, but the "race" made someone else - Peter Pacult was fired this morning at 1860 Munich without naming reasons so far. Pacult had this job since October 2001, finished 9th and now is on a respectable rank 8 in this season so far (although the tendency admittedly went down).

Taking over is Falko Götz (40), whose only coaching job was Hertha BSC Berlin last year. There he took over an underperforming team and led it with a giant winning streak to rank 4 (the point average under his guidance was better than the one of the champion). Bad luck for him and Berlin was that they had already signed Huub Stevens for the next season before. Götz was adored by many teams and some of those, who could not decide on firing their coach yet, will bite their as*ses for hesitating that long - maybe including Bayer Leverkusen for the next season when they'll probably be without Hörster (depending on the rest of the season, only clear avoiding of relegation - =three/four games before the end of the season - will keep his job for next year).

I think this´s happened cause Wildmoser want´s to play international next year. Pacult just want´s to stay between the first 10 in bundesliga...
I thought Augenthaler will be next...

This surprises me. Notwithstanding the bad run recently, I thought 1860 has played above its talent level for much of the season. This is a mid-table team that probably is safe from relegation worries but isn't Europe material, either, and that's pretty much exactly where they are headed.

Is this a case, as Olaf seems to suggest, of 1860 launching a preemptive strike to get its ideal coaching candidate before someone else does, with the 6-0 loss nothing more than an excuse to act sooner rather than later?

In Monday's kicker it still was reported that everything is fine with the President. Wildmoser himself told that he'd rather fire seven or eight players than the coach. Turning point seems to have been a TV show appearance on Monday night, in which Pacult stated to not know the problems of the team, to have lost the contact to the team and saying (on the question whether he feels the support of the President) that in this business you never know what the content of the next ringing of the cell phone is.

From Götz side I think that he speculated a bit with Bremen, but Werder is very patient with coaches and after this weekend it looks like Schaaf won back the control. Also, the key players clearly spoke for Schaaf in this matter. Other interesting clubs as Hertha or Schalke (in which the coach is discussed in the public) have strong officials, which secure the coaches without any doubt. Leverkusen after the season would be too insecure (whether they get a new one) and so Götz accepted 1860, which is no bad job given that there is some talent also in the youth and a new stadium with new perspectives in sight.

well the way i see it (as a 1860 fan), hopefully this will help get rid of the perception of being a mid table club.

the bayern loss and the 0-6 loss were very embarassing, especially when they seemed borderline for a spot in europe.
