Does anyone know how Fifa ranks the 32 teams???
Clearly the top 4 are:
1. Italy
2. France
3. Germany
4. Portugal
How about 5-32???

LOL, we're talking about FIFA here... it will probably be...
1. Brazil
2. France
3. Czech Republic
4. Germany
5. Argentina
6. Ghana
7. United States
8. Mexico
9. Portugal
10. Italy
When do the ranking ever make sense?

FIFA are refining their whole system are they not?
I think the next rankings to come out will be a lot more sensical than the last.
Then again, if Germany had the WC, I wouldn't give a crap where I'd rank on FIFA's list.

1. France- 4 Wins 3 ties in world cup
1. Italy- 4 wings 3 ties in world cup
3. Germany- 4 wins 2 ties in world cup
3. Argentina- 3 wins, 2 ties
5. Portugal- 4 wins, 1 tie, 1 lose
5. England- 3 wins, 1 tie
7. Brazil- 4 wins, 1 lose
8. Netherlands- 2 wins 1 tie 1 lose
9. Spain- 3 wins, 1 lose
games which ended after 90 minutes to me are considered ties, and is used as a tie breaker if two teams are even. PK wins are only ties that is why i have france and italy tied at the top for the 1 spot

I'm not quite sure... but after the WC, is it common for the winner of the tournament to not be 1st? I never pay much attention to the rankings, was just wondering where some teams would fall...

That's only true as the second tiebreaker. The first tiebreaker is position. The champion automatically gets first, the runner up automatically gets second, the third place team automatically gets third, and the last semifinalist automatically gets fourth. The four remaining quarterfinalists automatically get 5-8, then the round of 16 entrants automatically get 9-16. That's why the US finished 8th in the last WC despite only having a 2-2-1 record.

But how do they determine 5-8, 9-16 and 17-32???

Won-Loss record, counting PKs as ties, and then use the group tiebreakers.

this is how i would rate the teams in my point of view after watchin all the matches in the world cup... not what i expect see from fifa
1. both france and italy tied for the championship game and italy won the pk shoot out... if france had won the shoot out in my opinion they should both be number 1
3. germany tied for 3rd with argentina because of what they have shown in the world cup... germany advanced after pks so that is why i have argentina over portugal because of the quality they displayed since game one and how they went unbeaten.
5. portugal... solid in the group, shacky vs holland and england and eliminated by france
5. england... did not have the best tournament, but were atleast equal to portugal... while only playing with 10 men for much of the second half and overtime
7. Brazil 4 straight wins to start the tournament... before clearly being second best to france in the quarters
8. Netherlands- solid showing in the group lost to portugal
9. Spain- 3 wins to start the tournament before losing to france
*third place match does not count
rankings based on what the teams showed therefore overtime and pks are only slightly taken into consideration.
I also feel as though unlike brazil our past winner our currecnt winners will not have the dominant effect of past champions... as soon as euros begin the rankings should change dramatically as many teams at the top were only seperated because of OT and PKS

*third place match does not count
Why wouldn't that count? The system takes friendlies and qualifiers into consideration? The match for 3rd place of the World Cup surely is just as, if not, more important.

those are just my opinons not fifas
im sure fifas will look something like this
1. italy
2. france
3. germany
4. portugal
5. brazil
6. argentina
7. england
8. UKRAINE
9. Spain
10. Netherlands
etc...
that is where i find a problem with ranking teams and determining who is the best team
there is no clear best team that is y so many games were not decided in 90 min..
i think in football today there is a large group at the top where any team on a given day can beat eachother... then a teams below them capable of beating the top teams but not as often as the top would be team... then their are the minnows etc...

Maybe, maybe not. Soccer is very unlike the other 'ranked' sports in the world. Players do not switch teams, graduate, etc. in the offseason like other pro. leagues.
Mix the WC draw around and does Italy win it all again? Honestly, I don't think they do. Take out the set pieces and PK's and they barely score a goal the entire tournament and they don't have what I'd call an impressive offense.
They are certainly a top 3 team, but they are beatable by lesser teams.
It will be interesting to see who ends up as #1. It will probably be italy, but I don't expect this Italian team to win Euro 08.

Italys record was 5 wins 2 ties not 4 wins 3 ties. Italy only tied USA and to France. Italy will be playing France Sept 6 in Paris that should be an interesting game with two different line up.

If you take out Brasilian goals scored in the evening, on nights when it wasn't raining, then they surely were a very mediocre team as well. On days ending in the number 3, Saudi Arabia wasn't so great either.
My point: Why in the world would you "take out" goals scored on set pieces and penalties?. Oh, I know. So that you can justify your silly argument that Italy scored no goals. I guess defense doesn't matter either. If it did we would have won the World Cup in 2006. Nice.

Instead of blowing it out of proportion, you could see that Italy doesn't really have the strikers that some of the other teams have. Italy's Defense was good/great, but there were other cup teams that had one just as good *and* and quality strikers and playmakers.
My only argument is that I am not very impressed with their offense. They won by having a good defense and taking advantage of set plays. Did you watch a different cup than I did?
That's why I'm a little leary of a #1 ranking for them, but they will probably have it.

I understand the argument about Italy being "beatable", but the fact of the matter is that they have not been defeated in 25 attempts extending back to 2004 and including matches against high quality sides like Germany (twice), France, Holland, Ivory Coast, the Czech Republic, etc.
Taking that exceptional record in conjunction with the World Cup win, I don't see how anyone could rate Italy anything but #1 in the world at the moment.

Except that set pieces and defense are important ingredients of a good team. And Italy's defense was so good it obscured the fact that we scored 12 goals. For us, that's a lot. My point is why in the hell would you leave out parts of the game to make your point? Like saying if you take the offensive flair out of the Brasilian lineup, they stink. True. But irrelevant. On balance, Italy had the best team in the World Cup, and in fact, won it.
And as for this assertion...
"Italy's Defense was good/great, but there were other cup teams that had one just as good"
...please get a grip.
1 penalty. 1 own goal. That's it. The whole tournament. That's all.
