In today's Washington Examiner (http://www.examiner.com/a-172648~United_s_Eskandarian_red_about_card.html) (July 11th) in an article by Craig Stouffer, it is reported that Alecko Eskandarian "contacted the MLS Players Union on Monday to appeal his red card in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Columbus."

Eskandarian said, "Seeing the replays, I still don’t think it’s a red. Obviously, I knew what was going on and stuff like that."

And, "I know they don’t turn over many things, but hopefully they can see my side of the situation and see that I didn’t have any intent to harm him or injure him or anything like that."

In addition, the article reported on a new trialist at DC:
Note: Forward Yuri Morales joined United on a trial this week. The 25-year-old former Massachusetts striker has played recently in Denmark’s first and second divisions.

Waste of effort. It was a pretty obvious red, if for nothing else for it's brazen stupidity.

Good Luck Esky, but perhaps just sit out the next match and be done with it?
I mean you did knock the guy down after the end of play.

Just sayin'

I would imagine the odds of them actually turning over the card are slim and none.

They wouldn't do anything like give gonzalez a delayed card would they?

Yuri Morales is from Puerto Rico - 24 years old 5'11 170 lbs

More as I find it

Ouch - coming off a nine month knee injury. Came off the bench late for two games in late April/May.

UMass player - http://umassathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/morales_yuri00.html

I'm not saying he didn't push him, but I wouldn't say he knocked him down. Unless Gonzalez really does have the strength and balance of a two year old.

If only Esky would have reacted as if he had just been hit by a Mack truck when Gonzalez pushed him, someone else may have seen the red.

SEPTEMBER 25, 2004 - After quite a journey through western Europe, native Californian striker, Yuri Morales, has been signed by Danish Superliga club, Viborg FF. The club has been testing Morales with their reserve team, where he has already made a solid impact, scoring 12 goals in 9 games and earning himself a spot on the bench for a possible Superliga debut this weekend. Morales was a FARA participant this summer, training with German club SV Neusorg, of Bayreuth , Germany.

After an attractive offer from the Germans, he decided to take advantage of one last trial with Viborg, where they were extremely impressed by the crafty goalscorer. The 22-year old will be with Viborg for the remainder of the fall, where a contract extension is likely, after his strong performance with the reserves.

Yuri has offered us some insight into his European experience:

Well I would say that if anything comes of it, Gonzales deserves a yellow for his initial two handed shove of Eskandarian, but I think the intent was there, When Esky got up, he looked pissed. As in, I'm gonna knock this ********er down, pissed.

Probably a good idea when trying to get on a Kevin Payne led team.

Oh yeah, there was intent, no doubt about that. My question is, why didn't the ref do anything about the initial shove? Where was he on that one?

Basically my biggest problem with the whole incident is that this is yet another example of a ref and the league rewarding flopping and pretending to be mortally wounded when someone so much as touches you. A shove is a shove. Just because Gonzalez fell over doesn't make Esky's shove any worse than Gonzalez's shove. So, if he's going to dish out the red to Esky, dish it out to Gonzalez.

Eskandarian was acting like a total a$$--dancing around a dead ball? That is so amateur. That said, the ref should have stepped in and given him a yellow right then, or, because it happened so fast perhaps he could have given each player a yellow after Gonzalez knocked him over. But at least Gonzalez has an excuse--it was Columbus' ball.

Esky is stupid to ask the league to view this again, he's just going to look worse and worse with every replay. It was an easy straight red--he knocked a guy over on his way to striking a free kick!

It was not that much of a flop. If Esky had just stood in his way and Gonzalez ran into him and then fell over, then there would be an argument. But he lowered his shoulder and hit him pretty hard.

Ok, fine, give each player a yellow. The reason that didn't happen is because Gonzalez was already riding a yellow and would have been sent off.

Since when is it amateur to try to delay a restart? It happens all the time. It is usually met with a yellow if the ref decides to intervene.

So, we have a situation where the ref should have intervened from the start and given Esky a yellow for delaying the restart. He didn't. Then he should have intervened when Gonzalez pushes Esky and given perhaps a yellow to each man sending off Gonzalez. He didn't. So then, after he has failed to intervene twice and maintained control, he decides to go straight red to Esky and nothing to Gonzalez. Yup, seems like a totally reasonable approach to officiating to me.

Okay, let's sum it up...

Gonzalez should have had a yellow. I agree.

Eskie should have gotten a yellow for the shove, and a yellow for being a jackass. That means red. I agree.

Is jackassery a bookable offense? :D

I'm pretty certain that Esky wouldn't have donned the "jackass mask" if the proper call was made. That would have been a yellow to Gonzales for a two handed shove to the ground on Esky. Either way, both were bookable, but the bottom line is asking MLS to review anything is like asking the stoner drop-out if he has a pencil you can borrow. It's simply a lost cause.
