I am the Footwear Department Manager for hummel. Maybe I can help.
It is true that we dont spend millions of dollars on sponsorship and advertising like Nike/adi. Honetly, we really dont believe in it, and would rather spend our money on developing good products that speak from themselves.
You have to consider that a lot of the money you pay for most boots from companies with big endorsement contracts goes into paying the multimillion dollar deals. For us, we would rather put the money you pay for the boot, into the boot itself in quality, material, etc.
These days, I think that many people are smart enough to realize that just because some star is getting paid millions of dollars and wearing some boots, it doenst really say much about the product itself. It doesnt even say that the player thinks those boots are best. How many players switch boots when they get a new endorsement deal with another company? its all about money! We believe strongly that our products are very good, and they will speak for themselves and people will wear them becuase they want to, not get paid to.
That being said, we do however sponsor some teams and players, including Aston Villa, Hearts, and many teams in the Scandinavian league (hummel is a Danish company), as well as others in asia. Still, i think a player like Rommdahl, who has been playing in our Villa Park model for the last year WITHOUT getting paid says a lot more about the quality/performance of a boot than Beckham playing in Predators for millions..... you decide.
Now, Dennis Rommedahl (Charleton FC, Danish NT), is under contract with us, but mostly as a visibility thing to use in our home market, Denmark.
In addition, we believe in sponsoring more unique and interesting teams which have good stories and good Karma. We sponsor the Tibet National Football Team for example.
For more on the teams we sponsor, check the link http://hummel.dk/Company/Sponsorships/Football/
Cheers,
R
PS. the boot you mention that is $249.00 is a limited edition boot, only 1923 pairs worldwide (hummel was started in 1923), made with genuine pony hair and Pittards Goat Skin Leather. Not all our boots are so expensive.

I dont think its so much people see the boots and stars and they think they have to get them, its more of a comfort issue, if a world class player can preform well in them and it doesnt limit his skills we believe its also good for us, if i had money i'd buy hummels but since i dont have a job i wont be trying them in a while!

thanks

As mentioned, lots of the pros in the Danish Superliga are sponsored and play in hummel. We sponsor 6 of the 12 teams, and all have boot contracts (like in the German Bundesliga). As well, Dennis Rommedahl, and a few individual players in various clubs in Spain, Japan, France, etc.
The Tibetan team was formed only recently with help from hummel, and played their first international game in Copenhagen in July, 2001 against Greenland. We still support the team and they have recently played in the FiFi Cup against a good selection of non Fifa teams including -
TRNC (NF-Board member),
Greenland, (NF-Board member),
Tibet (NF-Board member),
Zanzibar (NF-Board associate member),
Gibraltar,
"Republic of St. Pauli" (the "host nation")
As for the "comfort issue", im sure most realize that pros, especially the top ones play in fully custom boots, that only look like the production models you buy at retail. As well, I personally dont give too much credit for the pros with respect to the "comfort issue" as most players will play in almost anything given the right endorsement contract. Just look at Henry's move to Reebok from Nike...I somehow doubt its anything to do with better boots, just $$$...
In any case, I invite anyone to make up their own mind, and try some hummel boots! Most consumer reviews I think you will are overwhelmingly positive.
Cheers,
R
