So what resorts have knocked your socks off in terms of service, decor, location, rooms, amenities, you name it.
Domestic
Caneel Bay, St. John, US Virgin islands.
Great resort noted for having 7 beaches on the property. The guestrooms and the restaurants and facilities are excellent by Carribean standards. Service is spotty. But it's the beaches, each one is slightly different and they are all magnificent. No TV's, but a nice library.
Kapalua Bay, Maui Hawaii. Great resort, small about 200 rooms, great open air restaurant and several fantastic golf courses. Nice beach and beautiful grounds. Each room has a lanai (balcony) and the bathrooms are all marble and the interior finishes are generally in local materials.
Last time I was on Maui, they were just opening the 4 Seasons Resort, but from what I saw of the grounds it is a spectacular resort.
Kudos the the Hyatt Regency Maui, beautiful grounds and the Swan Court restaurant is a great place to eat as well as it being one of the most romantic and strikingly beautiful dining rooms in the world.
The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Honolulu, Hawaii. Great old hotel and the beach on Waikiki one of the best wading beaches in Hawaii. The hotel is classy and very unique.
The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, I made the mistake of staying at the time at the Hyatt Regency (now the Hilton Waikaloa). The Mauna Lani is a very special resort smaller more intimate and with incredible service.
The Ahwanhee Hotel, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park. I was stunned by how beautiful and full of history and character this hotel is. It is so unique and special. Of the major national park resorts I have visited, this one is by far the most beautiful and special. Yes the Old Faithful in in unique and rustic, and the El Tovar Hotel has a beautiful location next to the grand Canyon, but none hold a candle to the size and majesty of this hotel. You feel as if Teddy Roosevelt could have designed a hotel this would be it. Beautfiully sited, it really looks organic, as if it were part of the valley landscape.
Foreign
Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands.
Each guestroom is a separate circular building. Nice grounds, and restaurant. They offer Boston whalers and they can take you out for a half day or day to any part of the island with a picnic basket. We went to the Baths. Very nice. Lacks the amenities of the Hawaiian resorts.
So what are your choices?
