Since MLS keeps them, I thought I'd shake the numbers and see what fell out (keep in mind the 2006 numbers are all based on box scores, so they're unofficial, and subject to the myriad of errors that all these things are):

As you can see, there's a difference of about 7 fouls per game from the guy who whistles the most (Richard Heron) to the guy who lets them play (Kevin Stott). It's also interesting that Heron whistles the most fouls per game, but stops short of issuing yellows, as he ranks lowest in that category (yet, Michael Kennedy ranks high in both).

Meanwhile, Jair Marrufo's awarding of penalties is out of control (he gave 8 in 11 games last year), but Mark Geiger and Michael Kennedy aren't that far behind him. Interesting, though, that Maruffo has awarded the same number of penalties as Stott in his career, though Stott has worked almost three times as many games.

My take: this is somewhat interesting information to have. I know I find it useful in preparing for a broadcast, and it seems to me there are quantifiable differences between referees that we've usually had a feel for, but haven't really seen how big those differences are.

Incidentally, if you're wondering, some other referee records, entering the 2005 season:
Most games, season: 18 Abbey Okulaja 2005 and Esse Baharmast 1996
Most games, career: 119 Kevin Stott, 109 Kevin Terry, 103 Brian Hall, 96 Alex Prus
Most playoff games, career: 18 Brian Hall and Kevin Stott
Most Yellow Cards, 2005: 62 Terry Vaughn, 61 Abbey Okulaja
Most Yellow Cards, season: 68 Michael Kennedy 2003, 64 Brian Hall 2000, 62 Arturo Angeles 1996, Terry Vaughn 2005
Most Yellow Cards, career: 397 Kevin Stott, 333 Alex Prus and Brian Hall, 313 Kevin Terry
Most Red Cards, 2005: 6 Terry Vaughn, 4 Brian Hall, Jair Maruffo and Baldomero Toledo
Most Red Cards, career: 36 Kevin Terry, 31 Kevin Stott and Rich Grady, 30 Noel Kenny, 28 Ricardo Valenzuela
Most PKs Awarded, 2005: 8 Jair Marrufo, 6 Terry Vaughn
Most PKs Awarded, season: 8 Jair Marrufo 2005, Michael Kennedy 2004, Rich Grady 1997
Most PKs Awarded, career: 47 Kevin Terry, 34 Alex Prus, 33 Brian Hall

Just thought it was interesting. Take it for what you will.

Interesting that in his one game, Tait had a high number of yellows: 7, and a low number of fouls, 19. One data point is tough to draw conclusions from, but this is interesting.

I was thinking that Marrufo's numbers might be slanted towards Mexican-style officiating, seeing how his dad was a top ref there for so many years. But this past season, that league averaged 5.4 cautions per game and only 0.211 PK's. Oddly enough, Marrufo's stats (low on cautions, high on PKs) go in the exact opposite direction.

Also, while I was looking at the Mexican numbers, I took a peek at Archundia, since he called one of the World Cup semis. Back in the fall of 96, he had a 14 game stretch where he awarded 12 PKs and 13 red cards ... yikes.

That was also the first game in the middle of his MLS career. And three of the cards were for dissent, which would lead me to tend to think that he needs to work on his rabbit ears or on his communication skills.

Wasn't there a controversial PK in that match, called by the AR, that USSF eventually said was incorrect? If that's the match, then I believe 2 of those cards were for dissent related to that call, which is, though not desirable, slightly understandable.

Hey where did you get those stats?
Secondly if you factor in the number of games do you think Heron Foul count would be that high. I mean how many games a year does he get.

Have you noticed since TAMBO and ESSE added the new guys to the lists the "regulars" are not working near as much. Almost like in the infancy years.

Anyone know where you can go to see how many games the retired or present guys have done.
Did you know that in the career games. they do not include Playoff games or 4th officials

Just my opinion

Hey where did you get those stats?

Career stats from this year's MLS media guide. This year from boxscores, so they may be unofficial.

Secondly if you factor in the number of games do you think Heron Foul count would be that high. I mean how many games a year does he get.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Heron has a high foul count, always has. I picked 15 games as the dividing line. If you want to go higher, you can see that Michael Kennedy whistles the most fouls. Actually, Heron's foul average is lower now than it was.

Heron's career numbers:

This year's MLS Media Guide.

Did you know that in the career games. they do not include Playoff games or 4th officials.

Nor should they. They do, however, keep track of how many playoff games a guy does and how many times they're the fourth official. Colin Tait has been the 4th seven times this year, and leads the league.

Have you noticed since TAMBO and ESSE added the new guys to the lists the "regulars" are not working near as much. Almost like in the infancy years.

The leaders are working just about every other week. Factor in Internationals, 4ths, and lower level games and they're going at a pretty good pace. Don't forget family and the day job.

I do think they are over extended at the bottom. 6 guys with 1 game. 7 guys with 2 games. I guess the logic is give them a trial, but you'd think they'd be indentified earlier, at least enough to cut that list in half. You do a league 1, 2 times, how do you find a comfort level? And they're not all doing 4ths almost every week, in fact the ones I've been paying attention to aren't. Some of those are barely doing USL/PDL.

well actually they are not working that often. and there has not been that many international games lately. And the AR's are working less. Even our FIFA AR's are working less. I asked one in a clinic 2 weeks ago and he said he is averaging 2 games a month. And last year he was averaging 3 games a month. They cannot stay sharp at this pace
Word in the Q and A sessions is that since the situation last december they are spreading the wealth around.
And then with some of the guys they do nothing for 2 months and then 4 games in 22 days or something close to that. the young guys should get about 1 or 2 games a month to get thre feet wet.

well actually they are not working that often. and there has not been that many international games lately.

Team GP range from 15-18, including mid-week games. The top 3 have done 9, 8, and 7. 3 more have 6. That's about every other week in the middle. As of today, there have been 43 games listed as international in calendar year 2006. Most have gone to FIFAs and MLS guys. There's been about 100 MLS games.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be better for them to work nearly every week, but with the number of games availabe, there's not much more they can be doing. Think of how quickly faces would rotate if MLS was limited to the top 15 refs. Perfect schedule, a ref does 6 games and sees 12 different teams. 24-30 game seasons so he'd see everyone 4-5 times. Now he's probably in PO consideration since he did so many games and 8 teams make the POs. That's way too many times per team and the schedule will never align perfectly like that.

Actually since the beginning of the MLS season there have been 19 NON us mens team and womens team games and of those 10 were worked by non FIFA.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be better for them to work nearly every week, but with the number of games availabe, there's not much more they can be doing. And your just speaking about the referee. Not even takening into consideration the Assistant referee. For instance i watched the Chivas (mx) vs Celtic game last night and the JAR was Lee suckle whom is on the list as a referee

the AR's need more work on the next level if we are ever going to get them as AR's in the world cup.

Not sure why you're changing my quote.

There's 10 FIFA ARs. Seem my previous point about seeing the same teams too many times. Next try to realize that with 7 FIFA Refs and 10 FIFA ARs, they could cover every ref spot, 1/6 4th spots, and 10/12 AR spots in a MLS week. Where do the next FIFAs come from if they can't work the highest league? It would be nice if we had a nice, big league like EPL where we could run out the FIFAs every week without having them do the same teams too many times and without taking away chances for the next generation. And don't forget the European competitions drawing away the top of the group in a good number of weeks. We have 6-10 games in a week including Wednesdays in our first division, very little CONCACAF play, and a 2nd division we're arguing if it's better for refs to do that or college. Where do you want these guys working while MLS expands and D2's quality improves?

The threshold I was using wasn't 10 games. Heron's done 38, enough to get an idea that he calls a lot of fouls.

Have you noticed since TAMBO and ESSE added the new guys to the lists the "regulars" are not working near as much. Almost like in the infancy years.

Actually, that's not true.

In 1996, 23 refs worked. Only 7 of them did 10 or more games. In 2005, 22 refs worked and almost half (10) worked 10 or more games.

The "regulars" (defined as the top five in appearances in the middle) worked an average of 15 games last year. It was 13 in 1996. The average number of games worked by the top five most-used guys was the highest last year (14.8) that it's ever been, and way ahead of the 12.8 average of 2004.

The most different people to work MLS games in a season was 30 in 1999, when the league did a lot of exchange programs with foreign countries.

You would be correct using your previous system, but they are not traveling assistant referee's like they are referee's take the west coast guys, like TOVAR or Monje they have done one team 4 or 5 times. And guys like
Gansner are working on 1 or maybe 2 games a month

I am not saying not to work the younger guys. Which is the only way to do this so that they can replace the guys on the FIFA list. But I am saying that Using these guys only 2 times a month is not enough work for them. The other guys are working more then our top people. There were 3 games last week with no top guys on the international games, or 2 games where FIFA referee's worked but no FIFA assistant worked. And if you pay attention to the next few weeks and you chart who is working those games you will see what i am saying. Dont just look at the referee look also at the Assistant referee.
WHY IS IT THAT OUR HEAD OF THE REFEREE DEPARTMENT SAY THAT WE HAVE THE BEST AR'S IN THE WORLD BUT WE ARE NOT GETTING THEM ON THE WORLD STAGES.
because there is jealously by some of the top people
