Up to how much DC should spend for him?
I want someone not more than 31 years old, so that he can play at least for 3 years assuming he would play until 34.

Can we buy our own top-quality referee?
Maybe that would be a better use of the money :)

That's a fantastic idea actually.
Instead of spending $6 million a year on a bunch of washed up fading stars why not use half of that money to get the best refs in the world and the other half to actually market MLS.

How aboout is we use the money to "design" a super intelligent ape-human hybrid?

Philip Lahm. Right now Greg Vanney is considered a premier left-back in MLS, so you could say we could use some talent in that area. Oh yeah, and he's 22.
Now there's just that pesky little problem of Chelsea wanting him...

Or spend some of the $6M/year scouting and find the next Lionel Messi before he becomes famous.

so than let's spend 1M/year for next Messi, then who do you want and who would come to DC for 5M/year?

If MLS had true smarts they would be investing their millions in this very thing. Build a true youth development SYSTEM in the US based around the clubs.

Jaime Moreno.
I like this idea a lot.
Sign him to a one year contract in his last year and make it his retirement bonus.
I'm of the opinion that we should use our "Beckham rule" slot, not for an international superstar, but for keeping people we might otherwise lose (Nellie), a captain, or a solid Reyna-in-his-prime type.
DC doesn't need a Beckham to sell tickets and there's no reason to throw all that money down the dumper to succeed on the field in this league.
I'm also thinking that any true superstar would slit their wrists after about 6 weeks on team Red Bull, or any of the other teams having trouble selling tickets right now.

Kevin Payne, by the way, said on The Soccer Show that if he could get anyone in the world, it would be Kaka.

Yeah, but his stock has gone way down since his club manager Jose+10 sent him to the bench.

Here's an idea:
Let's offer Ronaldo $120 million for a 10 year contract! :)

In my opinion, the "Beckham Rule" basically is for chump clubs like, um, say the MetroSt -- er, Red Bulls who need a fading superstar to sell tickets for them. Rather than blow the money on a Beckham or Figo, I'd far rather that United:
(1) invest heavily in a club youth program that, hopefully, will grow our own players; and
(2) scour South America for the next generation's version of C. Gomez, Moreno or Etcheverry, although I'd take the next generation's Messi if we can get him.

Spend the money on something more useful than an aging star that wants to retire.

Aren't AC Milan and Jueventas in trouble for doing that
Though it has seemed to spur their national team on. Hmmm.... :D

ABSOLUTELY. Let's find the next American Messi or American Becham. The USSF is not going to do this. THE ODP program only identifies promising players whose families are well heeled. Empower the clubs (i.e. with money and incentives to keep the players and a portion of future transfer fees) to look for talent. There are numerous successful models in Europe and South America; so we're not reinventing the wheel. Not only will MLS benefit, but I think you'll see the National Team improve significantly.
And, btw, isn't Freddy-You-Know-Who our salary cap exempt player now?
