Alright...right up front I'm biased...I love Argentina.

However, on this board and on others I have heard such nasty things said about the team, the players, their playing. I'm just curious why that is? I personally think that most of them are amazing guys, generally nice, caring and very passionate about the game. They play amazing soccer (granted some of them have not been on top this game but what player is on every time? Plus I could say the same for many popular European players)

After today's game and melee that occured everyone is immediately jumping all over Argentina because the German players and the media say they started it. Ummm well obviously Germany is going to say that and how correct has the media been up to now?! If the evidence comes out and says that Argentina is to blame...I'll take it but for now to just jump all over them before knowing all the facts, I don't understand it.

So honestly....why do you hate Argentina so much?

I actually thought it was the Germans who started it, looked to me as if that guy in the suit provoked an Argentinian player.....then he reacted.

Honestly speaking, Maradona's hand goal in 86 is probably a main reason a lot of people, English in particular, don't respect Argentina.

For the English, it goes further back than that. People geneally remember the 1966 World Cup as the one with the controversial goal (in or out?) that helped England win the championship, or for the North Koreans, or for Eusebio. But the England-Argentina quarterfinal was one of the most hotly contested and bitter affairs ever, with bad feelings on both sides after the fact. Argentine captain Antonio Rattin was expelled (some controversy over that) and refused to leave the field for ten minutes. England won 1-0; coach Alf Ramsey famously asked his players not to exchange shirts following the match. Asked by the press to explain this, Ramsey infamously responded "we don't swap shirts with animals."

At least, that is how the quote is remembered. It was probably closer to “the behaviour of some players in this competition reminds me of animals,” as the English Football Organization bio (http://www.english-football.org.uk/football-legends/1966-fifa-world-cup/sir-alf-ramsey/) lists it.

Add the Falklands/Malvinas, Hand of God, and 1998's bitter match - Bad blood, indeed!

Sorry, i am illiterate.

Argentina should have gone for the 'brawl' earlier on, get some biffo into the game, anything would have been better then that sad attempt at fighting, what man actually kicks others when fighting, weak as.....

I think the Ramsey quote was closer to him saying he wanted to play a team that was interested in playing football, rather than acting like animals.

The germans spacially Oliver Biehoff had provokate the Argentinian Gabriel Heinze.
Heinze has a german Father and he is the one who understand german in the Argentinean Team!
This is the real face of the Germans.
Their Media is real fasist, because the speakers and specially the Guest Speaker in the first german Canal (ARD) Günther Netzter told, that "southlers" (he mean Countries from south regions) couldn`t lose!
The germans want every time, that all other Nations give them ovations
But they are all agressive, particulary after they drank alcohol.
Argentina is is an honorable like other States.
German Players should be watch back to 2002, specially to the match Turkey versus South Korea!!! ;)
Turks and Koreans hand in hand after the match 2002!
Friendship and fairplay since 1951!
The brotherhood of the peaceful Nations, watching the link ;)

The Argentinian sub player who started the row was given a red card, because he kicked Mertesacker. Heinze ran towards Mertesacker, Bierhoff tried to calm him, Heinze went towards Bierhoff, Maxi tried to hit Schweinsteiger from the back, and all this may have something to do with Borowski putting his fingers on his lips in the direction of the argentinian players who were trying to distract the german players during the PK´s.

Come on, this was a very dramatic match. No one in Germany hates Argentina. These things happen in very emotional situations, when more or less everything can be interpreted as a provocation. You shake hands afterwards and that was it. German and Argentinian players had communicated about exchanging jerseys before the PK´s.

This is the real face of the Germans.

There is no "real face" of "the Germans".

Their Media is real fasist, because the speakers and specially the Guest Speaker in the first german Canal (ARD) Günther Netzter told, that "southlers" (he mean Countries from south regions) couldn`t lose!

I agree, Günther Netzer is truly disgusting, his comments often have extremely racist undertones. I hated that commentary as well. It´s not the first time he talked rot. The man is all cliché and no brain. But it´s not as if he spoke from the soul of "the Germans".

The germans want every time, that all other Nations give them ovations
But they are all agressive, particulary after they drank alcohol.

There are Germans that tend to be aggressive, particularly after they drank alcohol. There are also Germans, who are not aggressive, not even when they drank a lot of alcohol. Some don´t drink. Some get depressive after their third beer. Some dance naked on tables. Some want other Nations to give them "Ovations". Some don´t really care about Nations, least of all their own. Some are pleasant people, others not.

Most Germans were probably glad that their team actually managed to get back into a match against an argentinian team that looked almost undefeatable and played marvellous football throughout the tournament.

The germans are agressive and the believe every time, that they are the perfect Nation of the world!

Not really. Most Germans remain suspicious of anything that has to do with "Nations". And very few will say that anything in Germany is "perfect". There are a couple of things that Germans can do pretty well, such as build cars and play football. Ask any German about the supposed "perfection" of the railroad system or bureaucracy, phone companys, the educational system, unemployment policies, the health care system... Germany is far from perfect.

But we can beat Argentina on the football field, and that´s not bad. Bring on the Azurri!

I won't claim to know what happened because I wasn't on the field and didn't see how it started on TV. Anything that comes from the media is coming from either the Germans or the Argentinians. So I won't believe anything.

Anybody who is blasting the Argentinian action after the game by relying on media reports is just being naive.

Argentina gets no respect in the Spanish-speaking world either-they are perceived as arrogant, self-centered posers (to put it mildly)...

My Mexican-born wife's two prejuidices in life are chilangos (people from Mexico City) and Argies (although now one of her best friends is an Argie!) The funny thing here was that I was the one who told her that she was nice and everything, and she still at first didn't want to like her!!!

There are lots of Argie jokes in the Spanish-speaking world also (although I don't remember any off of the top of my head)...

Thank you to the people who have responded with a reason...it amazes me that games 20, 30, 40 years ago can influence how people feel about todays team, but ok. Also, I'm understanding the English viewpoint (and I'll keep my mouth firmly shut about that team :D ) but what about other countries? Or is this board filled with Brits?

for the others....thanks for all the VERY mature responses ..... I understand SO much better now
