Why can't we have a WC every 2 years, with Euro Cup in the off years?
4 years is just too long . . .
I'm serious. Host countries could be selected 6-8 years in advance so they can prepare and we would have soccer mania every 2 years.
Or have a Summer World Cup in June-July every 4 years and have a Winter World Cup in Jan-Febr every 4 years, much like the Olympics.
Any thoughts?

Nah.. I love the World Cup, and would really enjoy seeing it more often, but I am still against this proposal.. Why? Simply because the World Cup would lose it's value.. Think about it.. 5 champions in 10 years.. Too much..

So the top players don't have a holiday ever. It's just to much to have a mayor tournament every year. And there also won't be enough time to stage the qualifying rounds if you have a tournament avery year.
Winter World Cup is also not possible. All the mayor leagues run in January-February. You can't stop them for a few months.

That would mean an end to international friendlies cause that would mean all the qualifications would have to be done in one year. Meaning teams don't have the luxury to experiment. And even with all the international friendlies gone it might not be enough. Plus all the regular players would have to play a competition every year and they would get burned out super fast. So you'll see a lot more players announcing their international retirement at a younger age.

This is an idea whose time has come. To be taken out back and shot.

Why? The World Cup is the greatest tournament in the world. The anticipation almost makes me want to cry but when it comes, the passion I have for it is indescribable. The current format is just fine.

besides the fact that it's physically and logistically impossible, part of the magic is precisely because it's only every four years!

How about this -- leave the World Cup as it is, leave the Euro tournament as it is, but try to build better regional competitions for the rest of the world.
Have the African Cup of Nations only in non-World Cup even-numbered years, same as the Euros. (Did it make any sense at all to take players away from their European teams to play a "major" tournament five months before the World Cup?)
The Asian Cup was on such a schedule but is playing in 2007 next year.
Here's the big change -- Copa America should be the official championship of North AND South America. It, too, should be held only every four years.
I don't know that all the continental tournaments need to be in even years. From a fan perspective, it would be ideal to space them out like so:
2006 - World Cup
2007 - Asian Cup, Copa America
2008 - Euro 2008, African Cup of Nations
Then add qualifiers and perhaps some smaller tournaments, and you have a good series of tournaments without loading up players any more than they currently are:
2006 - World Cup (smaller Asian and American nations hold qualifiers for '07 tournaments; any team in the World Cup is exempt)
2007 - Asian Cup, Copa America (Africa and Europe hold qualifiers for their tournaments)
2008 - Euro 2008, African Cup of Nations (could have smaller tournaments such as Gold Cup in Asia and Americas just to keep teams active, but nothing "major")
2009 - focus on World Cup qualifiers

Excellent idea. Even better than mine.
For some reason I enjoyed this World Cup so much that I could imagine going through this every 2 years.

If you have World Cup in summer of 2006 and Euro Cup in summer of 2007... when do you hold qualifiers for World Cup in summer of 08 (or even Euro Cup 07)???

i definitely prefer country over club. i've always been a fan of international football over any domestic league. still, i don't think the WC every 2 years will work. first of all, that would eliminate the confederations' numerous championships, which are big money makers in their own right. also, it would make qualification much more difficult. the clubs would revolt...

Let's just lose the club games, switch to all international competition.
LOL.

I like it the way it is. The only way you could make this work is if you got rid of all club tournaments and reduced the leagues to about 20 game seasons while also reducing the amount of games played in qualifying.

And that is never going to happen, as club football is much more important (certainly in Europe) for most of the fans.

This is like a villain in a bad horror movie. You shoot him ten times, think that he's finally dead, but all of a sudden he gets up again and attacks you from behind, when you anticipate it the least...

I'd give up the European Championship for a World Cup every 3 years, but it doesn't make sense financially for european federations

I love the World Cup too, so I would give up the European Championship. But I am glad that we have it so we have another tournament to be thrilled about. And that makes the four years go faster....
The World Cup is the greatest thing out there, I will one day buy tickets for it.

Actually I think the World Cup should be every ten years so it's far more prestigious.
