SOUNDERS HOST KIDS DAY, CLUB AMERICA THIS WEEK
Posted 7/5/2006

(Seattle, Wash.) - - The Seattle Sounders have a week off from USL First Division matches, but host two big events this week. Starting with the club's 4th annual Kids Day on July 6th against Tacoma FC at Qwest Field, the Sounders then battle Mexico's Club America on Saturday, July 8th at Qwest Field.

Club America, from Mexico's Premier Division, visits Seattle for the first time in their 90-year history to kickoff their nine match U.S. pre-season tour against the Sounders. As one of Mexico's most successful and popular teams, having one their league championship a record setting 10 times, Club America features some of the top talent in Latin America with current and former national team members from Mexico, Argentina and Chile. Club America's star strikers Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Claudio Lopez meet a Sounder defense that has allowed just four goals in the last five matches. The first 5,000 fans at the Club America match receive tickets to the Sounders July 15th regular season match up against the Montreal Impact. The Sounders and Club America square off at 6pm at Qwest Field, match and ticket information is available at www.seattlesounders.net.

The Sounders host the 4th Annual Kids Day at Qwest Field on Thurs., July 6th. With an exhibition match against new USL Premier Development League Tacoma FC, the Sounders' Kids Day features a Rally Booth and post game meet and greet with Sounder players. Tickets are just $5 and are available online at www.seattlesounders.net or at the Qwest Field Box Office. For more information visit www.seattlesounders.net.

Sounders Getting Healthy, Just Two Players On Injured List
The Sounders have struggled with injuries all season, but things are beginning to come together as the injury list continues to shrink. Down to two players on the injured list, Forward Maykel Galindo and Defender Zach Scott remain out of service. Galindo suffered a fractured nose and orbital bone on May 7th in an exhibition match against Chivas USA of Major League Soccer, and could return to action as soon as late July. Scott is recovering from ankle surgery to remove scar tissue from the same ankle he had off season surgery on. He is projected to return late August.

Former Sounder Making Waves in MLS – Burpo Leads GKs
After nine seasons with the Seattle Sounders, Goalkeeper Preston Burpo is making a name for himself with Chivas USA of Major League Soccer. Burpo, last season’s Championship Match MVP and a second team all-league selection, was signed by Chivas USA in the off-season. After starting the season as a back up, Burpo made his first start on May 27th and has held the starting role ever since. With a record of 5-1-4, Burpo currently leads MLS with a goals against average of 0.70, allowing just seven goals at 10 matches and recording 34 saves. Burpo and Chivas USA travel to Houston to face former teammate Brian Ching on Saturday, July 8th. The match will be televised live on ESPN 2 at 2pm.

Sounders Battle Impact In Next USL Match Up On July 15th at Qwest Field.
The Sounders return to USL First Division play next Saturday, July 15th when they host the Montreal Impact. With one of the top defenses in the league, the Impact have allowed only four goals in 11 matches this season. Last season the Sounders defeated the Impact in the post season to advance to the championship match, and ultimately taking the 2005 USL First Division title. The Sounders and Impact begin play at 7pm at Qwest Field, tickets are available online at www.seattlesounders.net.

Cue the Darth Vader theme music. The Evil Empire, resplendent in canary yellow and blue, is marching into Sodo.

It's not the New York Yankees in raincoats, nor will this antagonist be at Safeco Field.

Mexico's version of the team people love to hate — or adore with unbridled passion — makes its first-ever appearance in Seattle Saturday night at Qwest Field. And Mexican soccer fans who call Seattle home are ready to welcome Club America with open arms.

Or open mouths. Those who don't care for Las Aguilas (the Eagles) will be heard loud and clear, so they say, expressing their displeasure at the team labeled the best Mexican professional soccer franchise money can buy.

Club America, a powerhouse south of the border, will play an exhibition match against the Seattle Sounders.

Fútbol family affair for Sounders' Rivera: Soccer blood will run thick for rookie tonight against Club America

By Mark Moschetti
Journal Reporter

SEATTLE — Like father, like son goes only so far on the soccer field.

For most of his 24 years, Santa Maria Rivera has been a big fan of Chivas, one of the world-class teams in Mexico's top-flight league.

But as a little guy in Ixtapa Zihuatenejo, Mexico, Rivera was a big fan of Club America, also a world-caliber side, because ... well, his dad was a big fan.

"It's kind of funny – me and my father were split between Chivas and America," the Seattle Sounders rookie midfielder said. "My dad was an Americista (Club America fan), and I wanted to be like my dad.

"But as I grew older, a shift took place between me and my dad, and I wanted to be everything my dad was not – so I started liking Chivas."

Sounders to host Mexican powerhouse

By MATTHEW GASCHK
SPECIAL TO THE P-I

In their long history, the Sounders have hosted several celebrated teams and players. The top two goal scorers in soccer history -- Pele and Romario -- have played here, as have legendary clubs from Europe and Brazil, highlighted by matches with Chelsea in 1977 and Manchester United in 1982 -- both Sounders victories.

The most storied franchise in Mexico will join that list when Club America kicks off against the Sounders tonight at 6 at Qwest Field. The appearance of the 10-time Mexican First Division champions comes as the Sounders are attempting to increase their appeal to Seattle's Hispanic community.

Club Report:

(Seattle, Wash.) - - The Seattle Sounders battled Mexican powerhouse Club America in an international friendly to a 2-0 loss at Qwest Field. Former Argentinian National Team player and Club America Forward Claudio “El Piojo” Lopez netted two goals to secure the victory for the Aguilas in front of a crowd of over 10,000.

The first half of play consisted of a physical back and forth battle, each team with multiple scoring opportunities. Both clubs nearly capitalized on set plays. The Sounders played strong offensively, keeping pressure in the Club America box. In the 21st minute, Andrew Gregor sent a long free kick into the box, just missing Cam Weaver.

In the 27th minute of play, America Forward Alvin Mendoza received his second yellow card caution of the match for rough play forcing Club America to play down a man the rest of the match.

Club America played strong, working the ball down the field in their first match of the pre-season. Awarded a free kick near the right side of the 18-yard box in the 36th minute, Club America’s Juan Carlos Mosquesda sent the ball into the box connecting with Ricardo Rojas. Sounder Goalkeeper Chris Eylander came off his line to make the save.

The Sounders came out strong after the half, but Club America was quick on the attack. On a breakaway Forward Matias Vuoso went one on one with Chris Eylander in the box. Eylander slid to make the save tripping up Vuoso resulting in a caution for Eylander and a penalty kick for America. Lopez drilled the PK into the back of the net to put Club America up 1-0.

Roger Levesque and Craig Tomlinson kept offensive pressure on the Aguilas defense but were unable to find the net. In the 81st minute, America Forward Lopez struck again off a long ball from Midfielder German Villa on the right side. Lopez drilled the ball into the far corner to give Club America a 2-0 lead.

The Sounders were nearly on the board in the 84th minute when Craig Tomlinson played a ball back to Jake Sagare. Sagare drilled the ball with his left foot and into the net but the assistant referee’s flag indicating Tomlinson was offsides.

In the 89th minute, Club America was issued another red card and was down to nine men for the final minutes of the match. Defender Luis Vilegas received a red card for a slide tackle on Tomlinson. A total of six yellow cautions and two red cards were issued in the match. America held on to claim the 2-0 victory over the Sounders.

Goalkeeper Chris Eylander had an impressive performance with four saves. Sounder Defender Ben Somoza returned to the pitch looking strong after missing the much of the first half of the season due to injury.

Club America clubs Sounders (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/soccer/2003115027_sounders09.html) - Seattle Times

Club America may be based in Mexico City, but they definitely had the home fan advantage in downtown Seattle on Saturday night.

In front of 10,200 fans at Qwest Field mostly clad in the distinctive yellow jerseys of Club America, Claudio Lopez scored twice to lead the Mexican powerhouse to a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders.
