True, Wolfsburg is probably the most boring city in Germany, but Gelsenkirchen? Not really a dream come true either...
To be fair, I've lived all my life 15 minutes away from Wolfsburg (which means it's 4 times nearer than my university), and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. However... I still make sure to stay out of Wolfsburg whenever possible of course :D and I suppose Magath doesn't live in Wolfsburg city either.
Edit: yep, he lives in Gifhorn county (many of the players do as well).
Yes. A few times, thanks for asking. Enjoyed my visit each time.
Glad you enjoyed your stay ;)

I really doubt Schalke pays considerably more than Wolfsburg.

Really? I know Wolfsburg have the ability to pay a lot of money but would Magath leave purely because of the scenery?

Well, as I've just established - he lives outside of Wolfsburg county, so the scenery's fine. Lottsa sheep, rivers, windmills and heathland if that's your thing, I quite like it ;).
More serious, though: while moneywise Wolfsburg can probably offer at least as much as Schalke, Schalke is a different animal. I mean, Wolfsburg still is a smalltown club without the pressure and atmosphere (not specifically inside the stadium, I also mean media etc.) a huge (in German terms) club like Schalke has. Maybe the quite life isn't Magath's thing, I mean he has coached Bayern, Frankfurt, HSV etc. so he certainly knows the other side as well.

Have you ever been in Wolfsburg?
It just seemed like this "project" Magath had was going well. I think he should of stayed a few years there if he does indeed move.

I understand the "small" vs. "big club" arguement but we're talking about Schalke here, the "almost club".
Perhaps Magath thinks he is the man that can finally get them back to winning. Then again, how often have we heard that before?

That's exactly why winning with Schalke would make him somewhat immortal there (well, ok, he'd be a legend in Wolfsburg too, but they don't have a few million fans). And personally I don't think he'll earn less, so he might think that's worth a shot.

The good thing about Wolfsburg is that you can move to a posh west Berlin suburb and be in Wolfsburg in just over an hour.

How exactly is that a good thing? I always thought the best thing about posh Berlin suburbs is that you don't need to stay there and can be back home in just over an hour :D.

that's what makes it even more attractive.
he's tasted wolfsburg, has done superbly well and found out that no one cares. no one will cry tears of joy if wolfsburg win the championship.
except the head of the vw marketing department, possibly.

Well, he has been successful at Stuttgart, Bayern and now Wolfsburg.
It pains me more than any of you to say it, but why wouldn't he think he can be successful at Schalke??
I'll be honest, as a Borussia Dortmund fan, the prospect of Magath joining Schalke scares the crap out of me. :o

It scares and excites me since the Bundesliga will be more competitive and stronger, and I hope he turns them into a European force. We need more than "just Bayern" in champions league.

Well, unlike you, I'd rather see the league dry up and blow away than ever see Schalke be successful.
Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim and Leverkusen I can handle.
Scheisse? No way.

Well, look at the bright side. He could sign for Schalke and fail there like just about everyone else.

Dzeko with his first hattrick ever and San*go was directly involved . Amazing.
Congrats Wolfsburg and good luck for the last games.

Is Wolf going to be anything next season without Magath? It scares me for Germany next year imagining Wolf without Magath and Stuttgart in Champions League. :o

Well, i'm sure that even if that happened mighty super Bayern would be there to save Germany's coefficient.

Unless our management gets their heads out each other's asses, I think we will see a quarter final as the best we can achieve. We need to do better, at least 2 clubs need to pass the group stages and 1 to go to quarters though preferably semi-final.
I'm wondering if the new coach for Wolf can keep the team with the same momentum and whether they can keep their players. They lose one of their two strikers, I'm certain they will be lucky to make 3rd place in the group stage.
If Stuttgart lose Mario Gomez in the summer, Stuttgart will also not be able to pass the group stage. Unless miracles happen, but they haven't happened for Germany in a while in CL bar Schalke's quarter final run. :p

According to "Kicker", Magath would have been fired in Wolfsburg if they didn't get a win over Hoffenheim.

Dude, I couldn't get your original link to work. But I found the story myself.
After reading it, I think they were thinking that the "Magath to Schalke" rumors would affect the team and they would fire him to take away that distraction.
I really don't get what's gone wrong between Magath and Wolfsburg.
Even if they feel he spends too much money, he's also on the verge of bringing them a title.
I read in the article that Magath has a "get out" clause, but why would he want to exercise it?
Is Magath using Schalke to get more power and money from Wolfsburg?
This is what I believe. I can't see why he would want to walk away from his greatest work......
