View Full Version : Worst Call of the Tournament

All the focus seems to be on the referees in this year's Cup, and lots of people have expressed different opinions on the worst officiated MATCH of the tournament (France/South Korea and Australia/Croatia are always near the top), but I haven't seen a discussion on the worst CALL of the tournament.
Personally, as big of a US fan as I am, and as much as I thought Ghana's PK was CRAP, I think that the worst call of the tournament so far is by far Ukraine being awarded a PK against Tunisia
Okay, there's mine. What are yours?

I would say the penalty in the last seconds against Australia, which directly kicked them out of the competition. From the replay I have seen, there was no penalty, but maybe another camera would show a different picture.

I actually thought that was a decent call. It could've gone either way, and there would've been whining had it gone either way. It was the most high profile call of the tournament, but I didn't think it was blatantly wrong. The one I picked isn't quite so important (though Tunisian fans probably disagree), but I thought it was pretty egregious.

the call that led to france's second goal was horseshuit. penalty in u.s. vs. ghana, supercrap. when borghetti scored an own goal against argentina, he was pulled and pushed and falling when it hit him, ************ priista. the no ejection call on zizou when he head butted...je suis perdu.

My vote (and I'm wearing a replica Ronaldo Jersey as I type this) has to be the non-call on Adraino's goal against Ghana. He was passively offside by about 5 feet on the original pass to his teammates at the top of the screen, then was also offside by a half-step on the scoring pass. Last part of the play was quite close, but the original offside should have been called once he was involved in the play.
As Ghana learned in this match however, using the offside trap can have devastating results when it is beaten by the opponent.

Worst call, in isolation (judgment):
Spain's PK against Ukraine
Worst call, in isolation (overall)
Graham Poll's 3 yellow cards
Worst call, effect of game (in order):
1) USA v GHA (Merck)
2) ITA v AUS (Bucassa?)
3) FRA v JPN (?)

A decent call? you call getting a penalty for falling over a decent call. With only 10 seconds left in the game, that had to be the most bogus call Ive seen this world cup. For me the Italians will forever carry that diving stigma.

Borgetti wasn't pushed, Borgetti wasn't pulled, and the goal was scored by Crespo, not Borgetti. Borgetti ran into Crespo.

It has to be Italy's last minute penalty.
That literally sent Australia packing and it was not very fair or clear a penalty.
Ivanov should not have been sent home ahead of Medina.

Most blatantly one sided call.
Ukraine v Tunisia - I don't belive in conspiracies, but referees have seemed starstruck in their calls to favour Euros and big teams, this was the worst and most obvious.
Worst call as impact on match.
Italy v Aus - US Ghana effected the match as well, but at least the US had time to come back. This call was made as full time was called. The Aus Croatia full time call (as ball was crossing the line) could also be a contender, as it would have meant an Aussie win, but Aus was already through with a draw anyway. As for red card for Italy in the same match 1) It was closer to a red than this was to a penalty. 2) Loss of a man isn't as game deciding as a penalty.
Worst call overall
Simunic's rugby tackle. This was the most obvious penalty (and card) of the tournament. His arms were wrapped around Viduka bringing him to the ground in the box as last man and yet both CR and AR missed the call.

Well, there was a guy who slid right in front of him, and he kinda couldn't avoid him (now, he could've avoided falling down, but once his progress was impeded, he had to sell it to the ref because he wasn't going to get a good scoring chance). It should've been an obstruction call at the very least. The Tunisia/Ukraine penalty was totally fabricated (as was the US/Ghana). I will say that Italy/Australia was the most meaningful call, but if it had happened in a group stage match, I don't think it'd really be noticed.

BS
I thought Ivanov did a very good job. Not a single blown call. Blame the FIFA recommendations for carding every f..ing thing.

How can anyone even mention a TUN/UKR PK and not mention UKR/SPA PK???
THE SPA/UKR PK was ludicrous! At least the TUN/UKR PK followed a lot of contact and Shevchenko was just as surprised to see the call. The ESP/UKR PK was called without any contact!!!!
Pathetic.

Wow.. There were too many bad calls.. Just to mention a few..
- Argentina's goal by Ayala vs. Ivory Coast that went in, and the ref said it hadn't.
- Spain's invented penalty vs. Ukraine.
- Argentina's goal by Crespo vs. Serbia & Montenegro that the ref called offsides, when it wasn't.
- Italy's invented penalty vs. Australia.
- Argentina's goal by Messi vs. Mexico that the ref called offsides, when it wasn't.
- The ref giving three yellow cards to a Croatian player vs. Australia.
- Brazil's goal by Adriano vs. Ghana that was on offsides, and the ref allowed.
- Etc, etc, etc.
