I think RIVER PLATE's original jersey was white(the famous red diagonal stripe was added later,by the fans).I think that a red sash was attached to their jersey early on to distinguish them from many other teams who wore the same white jerseys. The red stripe was later incorporated into the jersey itself.

Tell you what, I wish I could tell you the answer for any of the teams I follow... interesting topic.
The only answer I know is why my Subbuteo teams are Derry City and Dukla Prague Away.

i heard, cant remember where that Guadalajara's traditional jersey the blue shorts with white/red stripes was in honor of the french/belgian founders. thus the red/white/blue colors of the jersey.
the nickname Chivas (goats) came from a journalist who allegedly said the team played or ran like a bunch of wild goats. (something like that). perhaps somebody can confirm or disprove me.
a little off. the uniform was going to be white and red stripes, green shorts, and white socks, after edgar everaert's (the founder) favorite team from brussells. it was later decided that navy shorts would be better than green.
the nickname was given after a game against atlas (i think), and was meant to be an insult at first.

Maybe someone can confirm if this is correct or not, but some time ago I believe I read that Sporting Lisbon wear the green & white hoops because Celtic gave them a set of strips when they toured Portugal many years ago (early 20th century)?
On an Australian T.V. documentary recently, it was claimed that Boca Juniors colours were inspired from the Swedish national colours, with Swedish merchant ships often being seen in Argentina years ago.
No that is incorrect.
Sporting Clube de Portugal
originally played in a Half Green - Half White shirt, and black shorts and socks (This kit is still commonly used as an alternate today).
In the 1930s the team was tourning France and they saw some Rugby teams with Hooped Jersies, and the Club decided to change the home jersey to hoops in order to have a more unique jersey and they liked the way it looked.
Since then the Clubs traditional kit has been Green and White hooped shirt, Black Shorts, and Green and white hooped Socks. Sometimes they change to white shorts instead of Black.
This is the story given by the club.

I know Barca had a Swiss founder but their colours are red and white...??
Arsenal were given a set of Nottingham Forest shirts so copied their colours. Do the South American teams who copied English club names - Corinthians, Wanderers, Arsenal etc use the same colours?
corinthians yes,the rest no.
arsenal de sarandi (in avellaneda city) has the main colours of the two avellaneda city giant clubs independiente and racing, red and sky blue. The same Bella Vista of Montevideo, yellow and white from peñarol and nacional, although other version says it's from the vatican flag.
boca first jersey was light blue.the second was pink, the third thin stripes black/white (or blue-white not clear),all this jerseys from 1905,in 1906 colours changed as you said for the swedish ship, the original design was a yellow right sash though, not the actual hoop.this sash design was remade for 2005 summer matches, and the thinstriped of 1905 is now the away for 2007.
