BBC predict.........

Robinson

Hargreaves Campbell Terry Cole

Carrick

Beckham Lampard Gerrard Cole

Rooney

-------

Hargreaves would give us more going forward from full-back, but surely Carragher would be a better bet than Sol in the middle?.

I am sure Rio will be fit to play on Sunday. And pleasantly surprised by Sven's willingness to experiement with the line-up. Let's hope it works out

Awful. I'd go for a Brazil-style 4-2-2-2:

Robinson
Gerrard Carragher Terry Cole
Hargreaves Carrick
Lennon...........Cole
Crouch Rooney

Cole and Lennon given free roles, and two DMs so that Gerrard and A. Cole can provide attacking width (A. Cole's better at attacking than defending anyway)

So your solution to not shackling Gerrard's attacking prowess is to play him at right-back? Oh no - wait, the "overlap". Right.

Genius.

So, Hargreaves has his best game in an England jersey playing his natural position, so Sven decides to put him at right back. Interesting. He will give Beckham more support than Carragher going forward, but Campbell may have to be on his toes at the back.

For me it would be:

Robinson
Lennon, Carragher, Terry, A.Cole
Beckham, Lampard, Cole
Gerrard, Walcott
Rooney

Instructions:

Robinson - Organise the defence, put men inside the post at free kicks and corners.

Lennon - Don't be afraid to have a go but don't leave a big hole behind you.

Carragher, Terry and A. Cole - Do what you do week in week out for your clubs and for England.

Beckham - Don't go in the box to defend set plays, no long balls unless the target is one on one or we outnumber them.

Lampard - Protect Walcott, make space for Joe and Stevie and get forward when there's room.

Hot Coles - Same as before.

Gerrard - A few little runs to make room for the strikers or have a go yourself.

Walcott - Do whatever you like kid but not in front of our goal. Take on anyone that can't keep up with you, if you shoot make sure you hit the target.

Rooney - Turn up.

are you guys seriously hopeless now that your thorwing whoever you want at right back just to make it look more offensive?

the reason that hargreaves can be put at right back is because he is very much the utility man of the english squad and has the criteria to play right back because he has played there before.

my god.

and the other guy, not playing lampard and putting gerrard at right back.

my god...

Carragher has not done well at right back so replacing him with a player who does sometimes actually play that position makes sense. Now just drop Beckham and replace him with Lennon and I think it's just about the best bet with the current resources.

i think using carrick and hargreaves is a great idea, except for the part where we use carrick and hargreaves. Sod that, things are just fine as is. crouch and rooney, carrager at rb, bobs your uncle, 2-0 thanks for coming.

Hargreaves can't offer a lot going forward but Campbell needs the cover anyways. Just means Beckham will have more room to attack. Also I could see Gerrard roaming forward a LOT if he's at the top of a 5-man midfield. Carrick's a top player as well, would be good to see him getting a start. I'm liking the Cole brothers (jk) ripping up that left wing, would be nice to have Rooney or someone to lay the ball inside to though.

This thread is entering the comedy twilight zone. Now it's Lennon at right-back? What next - David James up front, big man/little man with Sammy Lee?

Carragher's done exactly what was asked of him at right-back. "Not done well" is an unsupportable claim in that context. Sure, he's not the most dynamic going forward, but people tend forget that even though fullback is undeniably not his best position, he's played there on either side close to 250 times for Liverpool.

I don't think Carragher was good defensively against Sweden, Ljungberg in particular had him on the dribble 2 or 3 times. He'd be ok if we had a proper winger or a dynamic player like Gerrard starting at right mid, but we don't.

Carra would be ideal if Sven had the balls to drop Becks and play Lennon, something he really should do if we're going with a 4-3-3/4-5-1. Carra's defensive commitment would give Lennon licence to bomb forward at will knowing he's covered.

exactly.

The mind boggles. He'll probably introduce Walcott at left back.

Y'know, sometimes you just have to laugh out loud... or cry. Many people have been saying for a long time that we should be trying a holding midfielder in all those meaningless friendlies where he changed the entire team. Now SGE's gonna try it in the middle of a WC to see if it works...

Brilliant.. just bloody brilliant.

BTW, I heard something the other day about it being expected to be 40 degrees on Sunday... and we're playing Ecuador. Hmm! Not sure how this is gonna work out.

Having Carrick as the holding fella might be a good idea though. He should be able to hold the ball better than an out and out defensive shield. Y'know, theoretically, like...

Like I said in the other thread, I quite liked the idea of the Bishops of Bath and Wells as the holding midfielder.
