I know we should take this with a grain of salt but from FIFA.com
"Switzerland (40th, up 4) now sit proudly in their highest position for six and a half years thanks to an impressive 5-1 away victory over World Cup qualifiers Slovenia."
The rest of the Euro 2004 Group is as follows:
Ireland 14th
Georgia 92nd
Russia 21st
Albania 100
Austria is 55th, tied with Slovakia.

Seriously? I mean, good for them, but that's still kind of a joke. C'mon, admit it!

You're asking a Grasshopper fan if it is a joke? Of course it is. We should be 18th. :D
PS: If the FIFA & Club rankings were printed on paper, I would use it in my bathroom.

The Fifa rankings are only useful for discussion, nothing more. I trust them as far as I can throw them, since they are on the computer, I can't throw them at all, therefore I trust them ...

Actually, I've thought about it a little: if the rankings are supposed to denote the teams that have performed the best in the world over the past, say, year, then FC Basel probably qualifies, because they have played very well in a tough competition. Obviously they're not as strong as a number of the teams below them in the rankings, but they have done well enough this year to earn some recognition.

Do the rankings include domestic matches? I find it surprising that Austria Wien is ranked so low since they've waltzed through the Bundesliga. Or does it include many years when they've been midtable. Kärnten was 2nd division a couple of years ago.

Yeah there's something screwy there. No way has Kärnten outperformed Austria at any time in the last 100 years.

That system of orginizing clubs is very strange. Any list that has Servette and not YB or Xamax on it, or has GCZ 100 places after Basel is messed up. Plus MLS teams make their appearance in the mid 200's. I have a feeling that the Crew, E-Quakes, or Metros (who are all playing well right now) would beat many of the teams ahead of them.

On a somewhat related note:
Switzerland has been made 601-1 odds to win the WC 2006.

We are tied with China. Not sure if I agree with that, but this is all for fun.
