View Full Version : Moving Day

Today I move about three hotel stops. I've been here since the 5th, and I've got another 2 1/2 weeks to go.

I had to go buy a cheap bag this morning. My souvenier and scarf buying has outstripped my current baggage capacity.

I'm not going to get too worried about things until I leave Berlin, but I'm already beginning to pick out items (like an old ratty second pair of shoes I brought for rainy days) that won't be making the flight home to save on weight and space.

I've been a fan of Arena for over ten years, but man oh man did he lay an egg at this World Cup. And it seemed like all of our individual mistakes were punished in the three games.

I guess I should pick another team to root for the rest of the way. It surely won't be Australia or any of the European teams (except maybe the hosts - who have been wonderful). Maybe I'll adopt the winner of the Brazil/Ghana game.

I'll have some photos from yesterday up after the move.

"Three hotel stops"???

Damn, I'm more tireder than I thought! :)

Three U-Bahn stops.

I'm now next to the Frankfurt main train station. I'll be here for one week, then I start moving every couple of days until I leave.

Anyone understand baggage allowances from Europe? LTU Airways says it follows the "2 bag concept" on flights to/from the U.S. which seems to indicate 2 checked bags and a carry-on, but in that description they leave out the "personal item".

I've currently got two bags, a backpack, and my laptop case. I'm afraid I'm going to have to consolidate a bag in order to get home without either getting hit with an extra bag fee (seems to be in the $100-150 range) or shipping a bag home (I'm guessing that could run the same range.

Any help?

Two checked bags (23Kg each) and a carry-on(8Kg). Apparently small personal items (they name books and a photo bag) aren't counted. I'm not sure what they would make of a laptop bag, but I would assume that's it's considered a personal item and not counted as a separate carry-on.

An extra checked bag runs 125 Euro with LTU. For shipping Deutsche Post ground is pretty cheap (42 Eur for 10Kg, 62 Eur for 20Kg + 5 Eur for extra insurance), but it can take a while (usually 1.5-2.5 weeks for parcels to the US, rarely up to 5 weeks). UPS, Fedex et al usually charge 3-4 times as much, but they're faster.

Great info. I may ship a small box of stuff back via DeutschePost. There's no time sensitivity on scarves or dirty clothes!

Andy, that's the ticket. I've done it many times myself. If the stuff is quasi-important, you can always ship DSL, FEDEX, etc. too.

Being in grad school hasn't allowed me to inundate myself with soccer as I usually do in a World Cup year.

What'd the Australians do to get crossed off of the list?

And what have the Spaniards ever done to you?
