I'm very glad I didn't put all of my tribal eggs in one basket. I still have Australia, Korea, Mexico, England, and Holland. My first choice is Australia because soccer's status there is similar to USA and it's great to see increasing support for the Socceroos.

First and foremost, Brazil to kick Ghana's diving asses.
Then anyone against Brazil because they have won it too much lol.

But after that I am going to root for Germany/England. Probably England over Germany though because Ger knocked out hte US in 02

Mostly no one. However, I'm going to be in France next week for a while, and I imagine that it'd be really interesting to be there if Les Bleus could stay in it.

95% of "American" soccer fans and supporters are latin/hispanic immigrants...... the USA shouldn't even be in the WC because it's people don't care about their team.

You're right about the similarity of soccer's status in Australia and US, but actually soccer is a -little- bigger in Australia than it is in the States. I say that because, for example, you would never see anything like the outpouring of emotion that occurred after Australia qualified for this WC after the playoff against Uruguay in the US, even if they WON the trophy. You'll also see things like important English Premier League matches, FA Cup Finals, etc., being broadcast on national Australian TV and getting very large ratings, that you don't see in America. The other reason I think that soccer is a little bit more important in Australia is the Australian attitude that values -all- sports and sporting activities. What I mean by that is that, when I lived in Australia for 4 years, I never heard Jim Rome-esque morons actively disparaging the game. Soccer may not be the -favorite- sport of most Aussies (it'll never displace cricket, Aussie Rules, international rugby, or rugby league in New South Wales, for example), but even those Aussies who are not fans of soccer RESPECT the sport in a way your average American sports fan does not. It's one of the reasons that I would argue that at least on a per capita basis, Australia is a more fanatic sporting nation than even the United States, and probably that's an outgrowth of the observation I made there that Aussies are much more worldly than Americans in general.

That having been said, even though I'm American and have been back living in the US for 5 years, the US is my #3 team and has been for a while. I support England because their league is the one I watch every week, and that's where my Gunners play. I'm familiar with their players and see them every week. Australia is #2, mostly for the reasons delineated above, and also because I was a soccer fan before I ever lived in Australia, whereas I support Australia over England (or anybody for that matter) in rugby and cricket because I didn't get into those sports before I lived there.

Cognito, you are such a fair weather fan. You probably like the Yankess too, and the Patriots in the NFL, maybe the Spurs in the NBA. Give me a break, you only like winning teams and you are that person that jumps on the bandwagon only when teams do well. Ridiculous.

Let me guess....you also secretly like Argentina.

Actually I wonder if the "worldliness" of Australian sports fans is the reason Soccer has a better chance of being more popular there. With the possible exception of the Olympics yanks don't like international competitions. Even the baseball and basketball world cups have lukewarm interest at best. But in Australia, at least based on watching TV footage, most people are passionate about the cricket and rugby world cups -- of being involved in the international community.

Oh wow, arwIII, you really nailed me down there. Might it possibly have occurred to your fragile little eggshell excuse for a mind that the reason I support Australia is because I lived in Adelaide for 4 years, and the reason I support England is because I've been a fan of a team in their league since 1987, a league which unlike MLS consists mostly of games that don't put you to sleep after 20 minutes of play? Probably not. However, since you accuse me of being a "bandwagon" fan, don't you think that if I was truly a "bandwagoner" that it's a little funny that I support teams that, in England's case, have serially underachieved in international competitions and have won a total of 1 major trophy, 40 years ago, and in Australia's case just qualified for their first WC Finals in 32 years and had scored precisely ZERO World Cup goals until last week? Perhaps you should go look up the meaning of the word "bandwagon" in a dictionary or something before you go accusing people you've never met of being bandwagoners. If I was a real bandwagon fan, I would support teams like Brazil or Argentina, i.e., teams that have actually won something in my lifetime. FWIW, as a true England fan I hate the f@##$#ing Argies, which just means that that little guess of yours was as accurate as the rest of your reply. Plus I support the Blue Jays in MLB (2 titles in the early 90s and perpetual 3rd place since), the Bills in the NFL (4 straight SB losses), the Sabres in the NHL (0 Cups, though they would've won one this year if half their team hadn't been out injured vs. Carolina) and the Clippers in the NBA (formerly the Buffalo Braves), so your bandwagon "argument" (and I hesitate to use that term) fails there also. Big surprise.

You know, my dad always used to tell me never to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person, but your post was just so over-the-top badly-thought-out and frankly stupid that I'm going to make an exception in your case. I'd like to thank you, actually, usually the jacka$$-types on this forum don't make arguments that are so childishly easy to refute. It's people like you who are one of the reasons my wife and I are moving back to Australia, this time for good, when she finishes her master's degree. Have a nice day, moron.
