I suppose it's easier to keep all the appointments for the 2nd round in one thread, than starting a new one every day. One of the mods can feel free to change the title if they don't agree.
Anyway:
Match 49
GERMANY-SWEDEN
24.06.2006
MUNICH
Round of 16
Referee: SIMON Carlos (BRA)
Assistant Referee 1: TAVARES Aristeu (BRA)
Assistant Referee 2: CORONA Ednilson (BRA)
Fourth Official: MAIDIN Shamsul (SIN)
Fifth Official: PERMPANICH Prachya (THA)
Match 50
ARGENTINA-MEXICO
24.06.2006
LEIPZIG
Round of 16

Assistant Referee 1: BURAGINA Francesco (SUI)
Assistant Referee 2: ARNET Matthias (SUI)
Fourth Official: AL GHAMDI Khalil (KSA)
Fifth Official: ARABATI Fathi (JOR)
As I suspected, the S&D group won't go home just yet, but will stay on until the QFs (I assume). Good appointment for Busacca after his excellent performance in the England game on Tuesday. And Carlos Simon's WC goes from strength to strength.

Interesting to note that this will be Ruiz's third appointment as a 4th official, while only being assigned one center. Is FIFA saving him for the later rounds?

I'm predicting that the last 4 assignments for the 2nd round. Three of them seem to be no-brainers:
MEDINA CANTALEJO Luis (ESP): 2 centers so far, last worked match 37
MICHEL Lubos (SVK): 1 4th and 2 centers so far, last worked match 39
SHIELD Mark (AUS): 2 centers so far, last worked match 40
The remaining slot is between:
ROSETTI Roberto (ITA): 1 4th and 3 centers already, but last worked match 36 so he is presumably just as rested as the three above.
KAMIKAWA Toru (JPN): 2 centers followed by 2 4ths, last center was match 19, last 4th was match 42. The question is has he been demoted (hence the last two assignments being 4ths) or has he been rested?

I've always like Kamikawa and hope he goes further in the World Cup. But, he was the CR in the ENG-TRI match when Crouch nearly ripped the head off of the TRI defender (dreadlock grab). I fear he has been demoted along the lines of El Fatah (EGY) who had the howler in the AUS-JPN game. El Fatah has since done four 4th Refs. Hope I'm wrong and that Kamikawa will be back in CR soon.
Cheers,

And why isn't Archundia still in the no-brainer group?

I almost added him to the list with Rosetti & Kamikawa. Like Rosetti he has already had 3 centers, but his most recent was match 41, so he hasn't had as much recovery time. The "no brainers" have had fewer matches and more rest.
But I expect to see him in the next round, especially if MEX has an unfavorable result against ARG.

So, based on this article below, it seems like FIFA will make one cut for the referees, on June 28th:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=372374&cc=5901
The remaining referees will be in play for the quarterfinals and beyond. This is purely me going by memory, but I believe that, at the last World Cups, 12 referees have been kept.
Of course, now it very well could be different, since full crews need to be kept (I'm almost certain that, in the past, FIFA didn't keep 24 ARs for the final 8 matches).
You need, ostensibly, at minimum, 8 referee crews. At maximum, you would use 16 (but that would seem pointless, as at least 16 of those 48 officials would be guaranteed not to work a single match and another 16 would work only work as 5th officials).
I suspect that FIFA will split the difference[s] (8 v. 16 and 8 v. 12 from past Cups) and keep about 10 crews. I would guess that, barring team conflicts, all 10 of those crews will see some sort of appointments, even if just as 4th/5th officials.
I'm VERY interested in seeing what the last 2 assignments for the Round of 16 are because I am absolutely convinced that the World Cup Final referee will be someone who works the Round of 16 and then gets rested until the Final. I think that FIFA will take a look at the brackets on the night of the 27th and, essentially, make provisional assignments the rest of the way. I don't think anyone who works a quarterfinal will also work the Final. And we all know that no one gets a semifinal and the Final.
If I were betting, I'd say that MICHEL and SHIELD get the BRA:GHA and FRA:ESP matches [with the possible exception of KAMIKAWA replacing SHIELD--in that case, SHIELD gets a quarterfinal middle, almost as a prep for 2010...and 2014]. Then, FIFA will put aside the five of MICHEL, MEDINA CANTALEJO, KAMIKAWA, DE BLEECKERE and IVANOV for the final matches (semis, 3rd/4th playoff and Final) and assign them based on how everything else plays out. As I've said elsewhere, DE BLEECKERE is my guess for the Final right now, with KAMIKAWA and MICHEL having the best outside chances. I think IVANOV hasn't come in as strong as some though and an appointment of MEDINA CANTALEJO--deserved or not--would be far, far too weird (he is, without a doubt, the 2nd best referee in Spain and the Chairman of the Referees' Committee is Spanish).
A lot can play out, but, if I were to guess now, for the big 4 assignments, I would say:
DE BLEECKERE - Final [MICHEL as 4th]
KAMIKAWA - 3/4 Playoff
ARCHUNDIA - Semi
MEDINA CANTALEJO - Semi
The MEDINA CANTALEJO semi appointment is conditional, of course, on when and how Spain go out. Basically, I think that that either DE BLEECKERE or MICHEL is going to get screwed and only get a 4th (or, one of them will take themselves out of it). They seem to be the top 2 UEFA refs (MEDINA CANTALEJO aside, who is out of the Final, to me, for reasons I state above) and both will be "saved" in some regard. Only one will get a big match, though, I think.
If you told me to list 10 referee crews that were being kept, based on performance, politics and necessity, I'd list:
DE BLEECKERE
KAMIKAWA
ARCHUNDIA
MEDINA CANTALEJO
MICHEL
IVANOV
SHIELD
BUSACCA
ELIZONDO
RUIZ (there probably needs to be a second South American and, with his reputation, I think he might get a "second chance", even if he just gets a 4th...SIMON deserves it more, though)
[POULAT and MAIDIN have outside shots, in my eyes...neither is terribly impressive, but neither has ruined a game...I'm just not sure which political forces are working for and/or against the two of them]
Of course, as I have no idea how the FIFA Referees' Committee operates and this is all speculation, I could be TOTALLY wrong...

Why not? Berlin and Leipzig aren't very far apart (not much travel time needed), and 4th official assignments aren't exactly strenuous.

Marco Rodriguez replaced Al-Ghamdi as 4O on the Tun vs Spa game.

But if GER is in the 3rd, he just sits?

In retrospect, it makes sense that Shield doesn't get a game in the 2nd half of the 2nd round since AUS is in this half of the bracket. Perhaps he gets GER:ARG?

Kamikawa has only had 4th official assignments since his ENG:TRI center. Some have suggested that overlooking the hair pull on the goal by Crouch may be sufficient to put and end to his stay.
Looking only at workload, it seem like they want Codjia in the final group since he hasn't worked many games. I'm not saying he isn't qualified, but politics do come in to play.
So I'd swap those two in your list.

The reason not is that even though the 4th official assignments aren't strenuous, there is still a 3-day work schedule in place for each game. The entire team travels to the venue the day before, does a wlkthrough and does the pregame. Then there is the game day. And then there is a recovery day. It seemed strange to break that routine. And since they replaced Al Ghamdi with Rodriguez for one of the games, they kept to their schedule.

Also, if Brazil crashes, he certainly could be in the mix, as Brazilian referees traditionally get screwed out of the later rounds because their team does so well.
Honestly, RUIZ and POULAT's ratings within FIFA are the biggest mysteries to me. I can't tell if RUIZ was instantly dropped because of how he handled the CIV:NED game or if he was given one big game and then intentionally set aside. POULAT is more interesting, as he's the exact opposite of RUIZ (RUIZ = high reputation, POULAT = lucky to sneak into the WC). He hasn't been sterling, but, then again, he hasn't made any major mistakes. Could he sneak a QF assignment?
As I posted on the referee forum, here are my official predictions for the rest of the way. If I get over half correct, I'll consider it a victory...
GER:ARG - SHIELD (AUS)
ENG:POR - MICHEL (SVK)
BRA:GHA winner : FRA:ESP winner - BUSACCA (SUI)
ITA:AUS winner : SUI:UKR winner - ELIZONDO (ARG)
SEMIFINAL 61 - MEDINA CANTALEJO (ESP)
SEMIFINAL 62 - ARCHUNDIA (MEX)
3/4 PLAYOFF - KAMIKAWA (JPN)
FINAL - DE BLEECKERE (BEL)
[Archundia and Busacca might be interchangeable]

This is now confirmed on FIFA's site. No word yet on the other semi but it should be posted tomorrow. Any guesses?
I like Larrionda for the match...though I have been wrong on nearly every assignment so that all but assures it will be someone else. I am going with Kamikawa for the 3/4 match and Shield for the final. I think everyone that did a QF is done (other than 4ths) as well as Rossetti and Merck since their teams are still alive. That leaves Busacca, Shield, Larrionda, Codjia, and Kamikawa for the 3 remaining matches. With 4 European teams left and a UEFA ref having done the previous final, I expect it to be a non-European ref for the final. I don't think the committee will trust Kamikawa (not one of the top coming in) and will go with either Shield or Larrionda. I know Shield is young, but he is the best available and the committee does not want to risk having this match go bad with all the criticism they have had.
I think Busacca will be the leading candidate for the final in South Africa as he is only 37 and has had a very good tournament.
