View Full Version : Reaction in the US if US gets win but doesn't advance?

As one might've noticed, this world cup and the game against Ghana have been getting more attention from the American media than previous World Cups. The final game between USA and Ghana has simply been put as "The US has to win to advance" that alone does not tell the very casual follower that the US can win and not advance. SO my question is: What kind of reactions would we see from the less passionate more stereotypical American followers if the aforementioned scenario were to play out?

There are those of us who will support this team regardless of the outcome of the day. That will be much easier if they put forward of an effort worthy of that loyalty. The true US fan should provide the example and set the standard for our fledgling soccer future, and, perhaps one day we can challenge for the cup.
Unfortunately, the average American will be quite indifferent.

Chaos in the streets. Rioting like we haven't seen before. Little old ladies beating up 5 year olds. Al Gore blaming it all on Global Warming.

I think the reaction will be what if they hadn't f*cked up in the 1st game.
The team shouldn't have gone to the BeerHaus the night before the Czech game. The 2 for 1 beer gift tickets from the Czechs should have been suspicious.:)

Yes, there will be some who will not care but most of the people in that group are those who haven't even been watching the World Cup anyway, so why would they care. What I think could happen, & this is what I'm hoping for should this be the scenario, is that the people would have more of an understanding of how the World Cup works. The media should give them all an explanation & in that explanation they should understand why, & in turn should have more of an appreication of the sport. This is what I'm hoping for.

a lot of people are going to be watching this game. it'd be alot more if it was not a regular workday. I think the people that normally don't watch the WC will be pissed off if the US wins but doesn't advance. they'll probably blame "those foreigners".

National team and U.S. soccer apologists (like ESPN): "This is a great result and shows that in the face of adversity following their drubbing to the Czech Republic, that we have spunk. We overcame adversity and a biased ref against Italy for a monumental draw. And today we took out a well-oiled Ghana team. And we showed to everyone that we are here as a force to be reckoned with and are a world power in the game now, and in South Africa in four years: watch out.
Typical American non-soccer fan: "Did the USA win today?"
Typical soccer fan bystander: "Yes."
Non-soccer fan: "So they're gonna keep playing?"
Bystander: "No."
Non-soccer fan: "Why not?"
Bystander: "We went 1-1-1. The Czech Republic also went 1-1-1. But since we had a worse goal difference, they continue to play and the USA is done."
Non-soccer fan: "What's the third number?
Bystander: "Draws."
Non-soccer fan: "...Oh, ties?"
Bystander: "Yes."
Non-soccer fan: "...See, this shows why soccer is gay."
Bystander: "...Bartender, can I have some Southern Comfort straight?"
US Soccer fan with inferiority complex: "I swear that bastard Arena can rot in hell! He comes in totally unprepared and we lose to the Czechs in the first game! We manage a tie against Italy with a bought ref and a win against a token African team and we still don't advance! It was like watching Sampson out there! Now I have to hear of this from the green rats for four years while they back their way in to the second round! And Donovan, you suck! Go back to the beach and Bianca!

It seems like US fans are finally learning how to be a football fans... :D
The last reaction could be the same from any world fan from South Africa to russia, from Argentina to Italy...
It's the better part of football: fans and their mad love for the team they support. A love/hate affair.

I haven't been a fan for long, but it does seem like there aren't a lot of Kool-Aid drinkers in the WC. Either you're brilliant, or you suck.

my non-soccer fan buddies have been watching. They engage me and ask me if their analysis makes sense to a 'footy fan'.

The average American sports fan will be indifferent. He'll just keep watching baseball/NASCAR and continue preparing for their fantasy football (NFL) draft.
The knowledgable American sports fan will probably say "bummer, that sucks, but we suck at soccer anyway" and continue on with baseball/NASCAR and continuing to prepare for their fantasy football (NFL) draft.
The real American soccer fans will sulk/drink until qualifiers start.

I think it will be "shrug" initially, and then tuning out completely from the rest of the WC.
Americans generally do not watch international sporting events that do not feature Americans playing. The coverage of the Olympics in the US is indicative of this: it generally features those sports and competitions where Americans are playing and buries the rest either in very skimpy coverage or at very odd hours because Americans only turn up in numbers to watch Americans play. Sad, but true.

If we beat Ghana, we can say with pride that we held our own in a very tough group, regardless of whether we advance or not. However, if we lose or tie, we finish in last place in the group and hang our heads in shame.
I think it's that simple. Winning today will mean a lot for US Soccer. I hope at least that we play our guts out.

I don't think it's that dire, actually. I mean, I agree that 1-1-1 would be the least the USA would want to walk away from the Cup with, but as to whether the Americans advance ... all of us knew that this group was the Group of Death par excellence, given the way the Czechs have been playing for the past year. If the Americans advance out of this group it would be a major victory .. if they don't it isn't that dire, because it was, after all, one of the two toughest groups in the tournament.

If we get a draw I don't think we need to hang our heads in shame. Disappointing? Sure, but not humiliating.

I will be disappointed if we don't advance and will likely sulk about it until qualifiers begin in a couple of years. I DO hope the U.S. committs itself to more consistent high level opposition, such as participation in Copa America.

From the media: "It's just soccer, let's go watch some more baseball."
From the people: "It's just soccer, let's go watch some more baseball."
I think to say the World Cup is getting more media coverage is untrue. I mean they mention it more, but not exactly to a point where they get actual coverage.
I was watching Fox 5 in the morning the other day and they were about to start a Jim Rome rant on there.
