View Full Version : England Fans A Pretty Uninspiring Bunch

we were fortunate to get tickets for the England Sweden match yesterday - but we couldn't believe the lack of passion from the England fans, they were as tepid and uninspiring as England were in the second half and i reckon half the reason England have been so poor is because the majority of the England 'fans' who have been doled their tickets through various corporate conduits don't have a flipping clue. Maybe it was where we were sat (west block 1) but the only time anybody seemed to get excited was whenever there was a corner (we were by the flag) and that was because there might be a chance they would be on telly. I was quite shocked to be honest, that's the first time I've been to an England match in a World Cup (and to be fair I was pretty damn excited), while everybody else just seemed to be like 'yeah, whatever'.
Yet in the bars and parks of Cologne (basically everybody without tickets), the vocal support was immense - even in the streets after the game the atmosphere was better than inside the stadium. The Swedes must have had about 10,000 fans in there to England's 35,000 and they outsang us from start to finish. Disgraceful stuff IMO!

the by far most uninspiring guys are the england band. they play one and the same tune over and over and over and over and over again. there simply isn't even anything else they play from time to time, only their whatever war tune that is. and that's going on for years!!! the imagination, incredible...

We have the same problem in Holland. 90% of the dutch supporters you see at the World Cup are people who got their tickets the same way you described above.
Example: In Holland, when the score is in our favour during the match, supporters sing 'Het is stil aan de overkant' ("It's quiet at the other side (of the stadium)") What do these Holland supporters do? They start singing it when the score is 0-0 and when the opposing fans are just as loud as the dutch supporters. This is just a small example of my annoyance.

They're just there for a day out it seems, and they don't really have a clue. There's no passion.

I'm surprised to read this because almost all the noise coming out of the speakers linked to the outdoor tv screen where we watched the game seemed to be coming from England fans. It sounded like good support for England until the Swedes pressed forward later in the game. When the tv showed England fans celebrating a goal at the fanfest next to the Rhine, the Swedes sitting at the table in front of us looked at each other in astonishment at the numbers there!

English fans in german stadiums are lame because the passionate & hilarious ones were not allowed to enter Germany. Many brits were turned away from the border/airport, and only the boring middle-agers were filtered in.
