I've won the quadruple with Blackburn !!! (CM 00/01 version).
You HAVE TO buy Mads Jorgensen (AGF) and Kennedy Bakirloglu (Hammarby). Johan Oberg is a bargain as well. Ben Burgess (Blackburn) and Fotheringham (celtic) are also great prospects for the future.

I have 01/02, thanks to C-towner. Also thanks to him, I can tell you that Mihaljo Pjanovic (Red Star Belgrade) and Kim Kallstrom (Hacken) are very good investments. Pjanovic had a hat trick on his debut.
I started with Ajax, but I figure anyone with the money should buy Rafael van der Vaart and/or Youssouf Hersi from them. They're dy-no-miiiiite!

I won the quadruple with Watford.
The chairman offered me a spanking but I politely declined.

My Coventry City lies 6th with a game in hand. We're set to finish 3rd to 5th and going to Europe. We also just put a dent in Chelsea's title hopes by pimp whipping them at Highfield Road. Reyna is my horse.
More bad news for your loved ones: The people who brought you ChampMan are bringing you a version of the game for another sport: hockey. Kiss my social life goodbye. I'll have to find the link to the game it's based on online.

I have a question...
I can't figure out a tactic that works well against a team playing a 442 with the wide midfielders having short arrows straight forward, and one central midfielder with an arrow pointing diagonally forward and to the center. The best I can hope for against it seems to be a 0-0 draw.
Any tips? The GWOC tactics I have produced more goals for me against it, but give up a ton.

Try man marking the middle guy.

I have a certain affinity for small clubs, so that's who I usually use. In my current file, I've taken Bohemians (of Ireland, not Prague) to the second group stage of the Champions League by finishing second in a group with Deportivo la Coruņa, Panathanikos and Sparta Prague. Our league form is average at best and we're knocked out of all the cups, but damn if our pockets aren't full.

Does anyone actually use the tactics that come with the game? None of them really worked for me, so I doctored up a 5-3-2 and have been using that ever since.

I'll do that. I used it at the end of a recent 2-0 loss to PSV, and that was during my only good stretch. Thanks.
As for tactics...all mine are doctored too. Either 442 or 352.

Like doctored how? I'm just curious since one usually don't get chances to compare tactics.
My 5-3-2 Spread is a take on the regular 5-3-2, except I take the central midfielder and move him half-way between the two forwards and the two mids. That attacking mid has a free role if he can handle it while the two d-mids, who run the wings 2/3 of the way up the field, are instructed to cross the ball as opposed to dribbling. The outside two backs in the flat back three man mark while the middle back plays zone.

I use 2 different 442's. The better one is very similar to the formation giving me problems from above, except I have the other central midfielder moving into a central defensive midfield role when we don't have the ball. The attacking midfielder has a free role most of the time.
The other is designed to clog midfield. I have 3 MC's all as true midfielders. The central one tracks straight back when we don't have the ball. The other two move forward and wider. In front of those 3 is an AMC, with a free role.
The first 352 has 2 DMC's, both told to move very slightly forward when we attack. The AMC again has a free role.
The other one has one DMC and two AMC's, both of which are given a free role. This works well against teams that clog central midfield with 3 or 4 players.

Sounds like the 3-5-2 I use when teams get wise to the Spread. That's the same 3-5-2 Philippe Troussier used when he was coaching Japan.

It is indeed...I hadn't thought of that.

This is true. Josh Wolff is leading the EPL wih 20 league goals this season. We're 2nd to Middlesborough, 3 points back but with a game in hand.
I'm taking suggestions for a new team to manage people. Give me good ideas.

If you're feeling adventurous, try either Kashima Antlers or Shimizu S-Pulse in the J-League. Both teams are fairly stacked and are already in continental competition.
Antlers: You're loaded with strikers and have a good defense, so round up some midfield help and you should be set. Be careful, their board is fairly quick on the trigger.
S-Pulse: Sign GK Hitoshi Sogahata from Antlers (or Seigo Narazaki from Grampus) and find one or two consistent strikers - Baron and Alex won't get it done by themselves. You'll have one foreign slot open, so use it wisely.

Beleive it or not, if you want a challenge try Juventus because they are absolute crap in the game. And Roma is unbeatable in CM 01/02 so it is very hard to overtake them. SI must fix this bug because the next time Roma will actually win the scudetto will be sometime around 2025.

Another question: Has anyone ever got anything useful from playing a long-ball passing game? The CM manual says it's a way for teams of lesser quality to compete at higher levels, but have yet to see evidence of that.

Actually no. I've always tried to just sign a couple of decent midfielders and play short passing. My teams always waltz through the lower leagues playing like this and usually do pretty well in cup competitions too.
How is the J-league in the game? Does it work well?

Work well how?
I think it's a good league, but then I'm pretty biased. It's pretty competitive top to bottom - at least in J1 - and the player assessments are fairly accurate with some exceptions. Making good use of your three foreign player slots is a big key to success.
A good path to continental competitions is the Emperor's Cup - the first two rounds are mainly lower level and prefectural clubs.
