It's a blessing for England because he was painfully (or in my case delightfully) short of match fitness and had put in 2 performances any sunday league footballer could have in his 2 games.

I know what you mean because there is no way england were going to win the wc with a 4-4-2 playing 6 attacking players. And now Sven is forced to play a 5 man midfield which could allow england to accomodate Gerrard, Lampard and Cole effectively. However, I don't think you can describe it as a blessing to lose our only natural goalscorer (even though he was off-form) leaving us with crouch and walcott as our only backups to rooney who is still not fit enough to complete 90 minutes. If we had defoe or bent in the squad I would not be the least bit concerned though.

A not in form Boy Wonder or St Michaels is better than Defoe, Bent, Rooney, and Crouch

I always argue with my dad and older brother about how Owen is better than Linker and Shearer - I guess I will win the argument at euros 2008 and 2010 world cup in Africa

I hope the team wins the cup for Michael

There's always a fairy tale...every big international sporting event. He started as the kid from nowhere and everyone wanted to know about him.....gradually attention turned elsewhere and now he's being ridiculed.....but there's always a fairy tale....could it be?

I agree with the sentiment of this thread, i said so in the original 'Owen is out' thread. But it still feels like shit that he is not there anymore, not only is he a fantastic footballer, but his name alone forces opponents to play far deeper in defense than they would against most other sides. Plus if we had played Germany at any point, he would have beaten them single handedly.

Owen is a big loss. Typical that as soon as Rooney is fit enough to start we lose Owen.

why would we want to play Gerrard out of position?? We should be playing Gerrard in the AM position with a holding midfielder like Carrick instead of the fat lump lampard

Owen is a huge loss. I totally agree with Sinner. Would have rather seen Crouch get that injury than Owen.. To debate whether or not it is a blessing in disguise is ridiculous....

I'd actually rather none of them got injured and we had all 3 of them available for the second round.

It's not a blessing at all, in any way, shape or form.

If Rooney has a relapse or the long un picks up a bad knock, it'll not look so good eh?

now that he is injured, we can play gerrard up front with rooney and play carrick with lampsNo it's not a blessing at all, it makes us weaker. Our top goalscorer is out injured again for 9 ********ing months and going to miss the rest of the world cup.

We only have 3 strikers left, 1 Totally untested at premiership level nevermind international level, 1 about 70% fit, and the other Peter Crouch.

yeah a real blessing alright.

He's the only forward to score a goal so far- are you on drugs, or do you just have a dislike for tall white men who dance funny?????

he is messing up the style of the team .Owens injury is bad news where as an injury to crouch wouldnt be bad at all.
lets hope the next england boss doesnt favour him as much.

So it's the style of play that's important, not the result?

I think it's more the point that when we play better teams as the tourney goes deeper, the 'style' of lumping the ball up to the long 'un, isn't going to work.

As you can see this strategy barely works against anyone let alone the big teams.

he cant win a header despite being 7ft tall (even when he does win a header he cant direct it)
Hasnt got any pace or mobility
terrible finishing

even when owen is badly off form at least he offers some pace and movement.
