it will have to be crouch all the way now, there's no other option as rooney is much less effective when playing up front on his own.

I feel terrible for Owen. He seems to be constantly injured. I saw his knee buckle and cringed at the sight!
He is a classy player and hate to see him injured. Here's hoping that it is not a serious injury and he makes a speedy recovery and is at full fitness for the imminent EPL season.

I am gutted on one hand, but on the other, how many goals has Owen scored at major tournaments?

France 98: 2 in 3
Euro 2000: 0 or 1 in 3
Japan/Korea 2002: 2 in 5
Portugal 2004: 1 in 4

To be honest, we will not miss many goals from not having Owen there. Plus, does anyone else remember a tournament when our best striker got injured during the group stages, pushing a young, untried West Ham (produced) striker into the spotlight for the KO rounds?

(Though, just to reiterate, Owen is one of my favourite players in the world and i am truly gutted, not just for the team, but also for the poor lad himself, he must be so down and depressed right now, chin up Mikey, you have at least 3 or 4 more major tournaments to look forwards to)

I rather have fit and at form Michael Owen than Rooney or Crouch

I'm crying because I wanted him to be a legend in our history. Players like Michael Owen come only every 10 years. See you in 2010

I think they modeled the little fat latino kid in the TV commercial off Sven- the one who has to put Dafoe in goal for the pickup game because he forgot to pick a keeper.

Aye - that was always going to happen though, wasn't it.
Not Owen per se, but a tourney ending injury t oone of the forwards.
Sven set it up with the picking of Theo.

Terrible luck for Owen, poor lad.

Sven took the gamble to bring Walcott he's going to jsut have to follow through with that gamble and risk playing him.

Personally, I'd rather Sven play Cole, Lennon or even Gerrard up front - instead of Walcott. But I doubt that'll happen, simply because Sven will feel the need to justify his selections.

I hope I'm wrong (for England's sake) but I simply cannot believe that someone not good enough to make even one appearance in the premiership will cut it against teams like Holland or Brazil.

Are you suggesting we play David james up front?

It's terrible luck but SGE's forward selection was always a disaster waiting to happen. Four forward including Owen-who hadn't played all year, Rooney - who had a broken foot, Walcott - who is 17 and completely untried, and Crouch - who is a donkey; what on earth was SGE thinking?

Terrible luck for Owen, if Walcott doesn't perform then this all falls on Sven's shoulders, but it's not like he cares, he's already gone. This does not bode well for England.

Well he has statistically played more minutes in the premiership as a striker than Walcott has(remember when Pearce subbed in another goalie so that they could move James into the strikers position for Man City)

What SGE was thinking had far more to do with hypothetical football and systems that might work, than anything remotely to do with actual football, where things like goals are of any importance. Why in England does it always have to be the extremes: we either have an illiterate manager who can't even spell the word "strategy" but with plenty of passion, or we get the extreme opposite which is a man who knows all about systems, but without the common sense to realize that in football matches you have to occasionally out score the opposition in order to progress. This is looking like the worst planned international tournament for England since the 1950s, thank heavens we had such a piss easy group, and now a relatively easy round of 16 match up, otherwise this would have been a very brief WC indeed

Terrible about Michael Owen.. He is a class act and a very intelligent and brilliant forward.. What a freak injury too....So, will it be Crouch partnering with Rooney, or do you think there is a chance that Gerrard will take Crouch's spot?

I'm not sure Gerrard and Rooney will work up front, they both wander all over the pitch. It might be a bit like Lampard/Gerrard, both compromising their game and neither playing to their full potential. That being said, the opposite could also be true and it could be hellish for the opposition defence to mark them. Guess there's only one way to find out.
