One thing that really impressed me about attending MLS games is that no one leaves early. I once went to a USMNT and Revolution double-header. It was getting late, much of the crowd traveled far to see the US team play, including myself, but no one left early. Even with the Revolution losing the game everyone stayed. You won’t see that at a baseball game.

Sometimes They have special PPV deals for single EPL games. Back in August you could order the Charity Shield game between Liverpool and Arsenal for $20.00

5-8 EPL games a week? Jesus Christ, that's probably just where you live. Where I live I get one EPL game a week, except it's five days after the game, and EPL highlight show on thrusdays, one CL game every week there is one, one italian game a week in italian, mexican soccer on the spansih channel i don't know how often that is, MLS once a week on ESPN and all metrostars games on MSG or something, and most of the USA MNT AND WNT games

It's people like you that kill off soccer in this country. Instead of watching an American channel, you decide to watch Telemundo or Univision. Why must all commentators be the same and yell "GOOOOOOAL?" All we ever do is want a soccer game in English. Now when we get it, you turn it away. Very smart. This is also a reason why no one will consider soccer American.

Any of our broadcasters are better than any Latin American or European broadcaster. Just appreciate the fact that we have soccer games in English and watch it in English. But then again, either way you're going to find some way to complain of how our broadcasters are horrible regardless. You can't be serious...!!! [Oh wait, that's tennis.]
During WC I had to watch a lot of games with the sound off because I got so tired of being triple teamed by Idiots who don't understand the nuances or the terminology of the game and often talk among themselve about anything BUT the game. "Oh by the way somebody scored!"
You're probably young enough that it's all you know. But the America love it or leave it attitude is all wrong.
Why do we have to put up with second rate comms who just like the sound of their own voices and not let the game itself do the talking.

First we should learn to appreciate what we have. It will get better with more people watching. I get tired of British announcers not understanding the game. They give credit to players that make costly mistakes. Or sometimes they don't give credit to someone who starts it. Maybe I don't want to let the game do the talking. English commentary is what puts me to sleep. Plus, it most certainly will not attract new fans.

Also, everyone makes it sound like that ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC are the only one's that use two announcers and a reporter. Telemundo and Univision do it sometimes also. Those commentators talk even more amongst themselves.

The line up of games this weekend is a little slow due to the FA Cup. But generaly FSW will have

2 EPL games on Sat.
1 EPL game on Sun
1 EPL game on Mon
and sometimes a live midweek game
It is also common for them to show a Saturday game sometime during the following week, including the FA Cup.

1 German game on Sat and another one on Sunday
1 SPL game a week, almost always either Rangers or Celtic
1 La Liga game a week, also on Sunday
1 or 2 Brazilian games a week
1 or 2 Argentine game a week

1 UEFA Cup match each match day

Also, the EPL Preview and Review Shows, and the Argintina Review Show. Also the Football Asia review show.

Last season FSW had French and Dutch games but not this year.

1 EPL match is availble on PPV each week. Generaly the best game. But the replay will almost always air on FSW about a week later.

On other Networks,

ESPN-1 CL game per match day and 1 MLS game a week. Plus almost all USA Nats Team games.

FSWE shows all kinds of South Amrican soccer-Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Columbia and others- also Copa Lib
.
GALA ,TELE, and UNIV show between 2 and 5 Mexican games a week.

I have to say it as you've hit a nerve with me. One thing i HATE is the number of people who leaves games early in England. True fans are there till the end. Even if they're teams being hammered. Thanks for all the great info on watching football in the US. Oh, and for the guy who says English commentry is boring, I love English commentary!! There's no way people could stand American style commentary of football matches on British television. Even if Motty goes a bit insane with his breakfast analogies.

I live in a largely populated "city", altho not officially a city (another story). I watch football on satellite tv and i think we must get 4 EPL matches shown a week maximum on sky tv. including pay per view. although there are cup games shown on national tv as well. Whats it like actually attending matches in America, like the MLS. I've watched some MLS football on TV as its sometimes shown on channel 5 late at night. It's always interested me since we had Ian Feuer playing for Luton, he was a fantastic player for us and still haven't replaced him! :)

Dude, the thrid world´s television has the best football coverage and channels, by local tv or by cable tv, every body enjoy it. Is great.

When I watch a game in any of the spanish channels I always have a beer by my side and enjoy the game. On the other hand, watching with our broadcasters is like having seltzer-water by my side; by the 15th minute the fitz is gone!

Again, the Latin American/Spanish football channels are so cool!. Just feel the passion.

You need tp pay attention to whats going on.
If you seriously believe what you have typed you don't know much about the game.
Any of the English commentators that are on during games shown over here are top class. If they aren't making the calls that you think then perhaps you are in the wrong..ever think of that.

On a scale of 10 i would rate any of the English commentators at about an average of 8.

On the same scale i would rate the native S. Americans at about an average of 8

On the same scale i would rate the American ones at an average of about 4.

During the world cup i watched several matches on the Spanish channels as i couldn't take the droll from the commentators. The only good one was that Italian they brought in to do the Italian matches as they knew their limitations.Pity they left that Irish fool Smythe on for the others instead of him.

I can see English commentary puting you to sleep though, i mean they stick to the game and don't give endless drivel about stats.

We Americans like numbers in our sports, by and large. It's part of who we are. We also like hyperbole. This may contribute to The Man keeping us (as Ami soccer fans) down. Soccer has place neither for hyperbole nor stats. It's a bigger translation effort by announcers than one might think. And if they have to (or feel they have to) translate to the converted (us), how much do you think those pitching the game to media outlets and sponsors have to work? Who are the stars? How can you tell who's better? Although we can answer that, it's not as easy as communicating a .353 BA with 45 HR and 132 RBI, or showing a 7'3" 305 pound man who can move like a prima ballerina through the key.

Oh, and I thought Chinaglia was drunk most of the time he was announcing during WC 2002.

copaantl98:
It's nice that you enjoy the game and like having to be told in three different ways, exactly what you've really just seen with your own eyes.

Or if you want 3 minutes of opinions of how “he really should have played that shot.” Or “Made that save”

Or you “see” a shot go 10 feet over the bar and like to hear that the goalie was beaten and just a couple of foot lower "and it's a goal"
[All sound familiar)? Of course it does.

Well if you enjoy this or need it, then stick with it, it’s you they’re talking to.

I saw an EPL game recently with Martin Tyler doing the com. Alone.
Most of the game he’ll just identify the player by name as the game flows. Sometimes for minutes on end he doesn’t say a word, then as the ball gets closer to the goal you can feel his rising excitement.

Why do I feel here, that I’m just casting pearls…!!!

I get tired of British announcers not understanding the game.
At least you have a sense of humor.

Oh, and I thought Chinaglia was drunk most of the time he was announcing during WC 2002. SObearCAL: I’ve been here long enough to understand what you’re saying. That’s the way it’s done on U S TV. And coming from a long history of US football and baseball US fans expect it.

This isn’t a, we’re better than you argument, it’s each to their own way.

I hate to be treated as if I’m blind or that I’m just too dumb to understand what I’ve just witnessed.

But most of all it’s the filling up of airspace with meaningless drivel that I object to. The constant Yammer, yammer of nothing to do with the game. And when one guy gets tired of talking and needs a break, he always passes it off to the other with a stupid question to start him off.

I enjoy watch US soccer but mostly with the sound off.

Oh, and I thought Chinaglia was drunk most of the time he was announcing during WC 2002. Could have been...:D

Go Trojans!

A most unfortunate legacy from Baseball announcers. Thinking back to when Phil Rizzuto and Bill White announced Yankees games on WPIX-TV. During a pre-game for a game up in Toronto, talking about the sun field in the outfield, Scooter (Rizzuto) asked White: "Does the sun set in the west here in Canada, too?". But, as soon as he'd mention someone's birthday on the air, like clockwork the yanks would put together a rally, score a few, and win the game...

The reason British commentators don't give stats is because football isn't like that. We don't need to be constantly infromed of the players record. Athough Motson is excessive with his stats.
The best commentators are Martin Tyler and Andy Gray, or if you want a laugh Big Ron.

So that's why they talk so much.

One thing (just one) is a lot of US comms are blatantly partisan, you can see that they want one of the teams to win.
Where in England it’s only when United play, and they can do no wrong…!

Trojans.! I used to go games there with one of my ex wives who was getting a grad degree with them.
They had a back at that time…. what was the name, oh yeh ,Juice or something…!

Sure... Joe Tutino is paid by the Galaxy to call Galaxy games for Galaxy fans; just like Michael Kay is paid by the Yankees to call Yankees games for Yankees fans.

John Madden, on the other hand, is paid by Fox to call any NFC game they might have, for a neutral audience, making his commentary neutral (or, as they said in the dot-com boom: Club Agnostic).

Although, sometimes it seemed the MLS Saturday GOW announcers had a thing for that Twellman kid.

Oh, yeah, and the Trojans had a pretty good player this past year, too...
